Waldok[1] is a member of Avantika's crew aboard the Squalleater. As an NPC, Waldok is played by Matthew Mercer.

Description[edit | edit source]

Waldok is a skinny man. On his upper arm is a tattoo of a mermaid reaching for a piece of fruit from a tree.[2]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Background[edit | edit source]

Waldok was able to win a battle with scurvy a few years back and decided to get a tattoo to commemorate the ordeal.[3] Waldok was the crew member of the Squalleater.

Campaign 2: The Mighty Nein[edit | edit source]

Alongside his shipmate Zoen, Waldok was told to sleep on deck and to give up his quarters to the Mighty Nein who were recently inducted into the Squalleater's crew under duress. Avantika provided the party with quarters when they agreed to cooperate.[4]

At some point during the Squalleater's journey from Urukayxl to Darktow Isle, Waldok was transferred from the Squalleater to The Mistake. Jester encountered him as he was receiving a tattoo of a mermaid grasping a piece of fruit from Orly Skiffback, and wanted to learn how to do them herself. Waldok gave her reluctant permission to attempt to fill in a portion of his tattoo, and she did a good job.[5]

After the ship docked at Darktow, Waldok returned to the Squalleater and was one of the crewmen on watch on the night of Mighty Nein's infiltration. After he heard noises in the captain's quarters, Waldok went towards the room to investigate. Initially, he saw nothing before he suddenly plunged through the hole under the rug. He fell on top of his sleeping shipmate Zoen, who panicked and stabbed Waldok multiple times before recognizing him. Zoen helped the seriously wounded Waldok off the ship and took him to the nearby Bloated Cup in search of aid.[6] As they entered the tavern, Caduceus Clay saw Waldok's injuries and voluntarily healed him and bought him a drink in sympathy.[7] As the night progressed, Beauregard entered the tavern and aldo bought Waldok a drink, trying to imply that she was there all night in hopes of creating a false alibi for her involvement with the raid on Avantika's office. In his drunken state, Waldok paid Beauregard little heed, still bitterly arguing with Zoen.[8]

The following morning, all members of Avantika's crew were summoned on the deck of the Squalleater to be questioned about the events of the previous night. Waldok told Avantika his version of what happened, with Zoen once more apologizing. Avantika thanked Caduceus for the care he gave Waldok and Bark (who was also injured in the events of the night). When Vera began casting Locate Object on Avantika's diary, Caleb trapped most of Avantika's crew (including Waldok) behind a Wall of Fire.[9]

Waldok was present for the fierce battle between the crew of the Squalleater and the Mighty Nein. In the aftermath, he was either one of three unnamed crew members killed in battle when Caleb cast Fireball, or he was the unnamed surviving Squalleater crew member taken into custody by the Revelry alongside Bouldergut, Jeremiah and Ipess after the Plank King sentenced Avantika.[10]
