But here's the thing: it's really scary to do all those things, and to go out in the front, and to look for traps, and to disarm things, and to scout ahead and steal things from terrible lairs, and it's scary, and I don't-- I don't have--I know you all have my back. I know you all care for me. But no one has my front.

— Nott, to Caleb[12]

Revvetha "Veth" Brenatto[3] (née Smyt'hh) is a halfling rogue (later multiclassed into a wizard). She took on the anagrammatic name Nott the Brave for a period of about two years while cursed into the form of a goblin girl. She is played by Sam Riegel.

Description[edit | edit source]

Appearance[edit | edit source]

As a goblin, Nott had green skin, green hair, and yellow eyes. Her clothes were not in great condition, much like her traveling companion, Caleb. She hid her face with a hood and a porcelain mask. Nott was three feet tall[13] and weighed 45 pounds.[14] Sam stated that her goblin form was that of an seven- or eight-year-old goblin, an adult goblin;[15][16] Nott herself estimated her age as a goblin between 6 and 9 years.[17] In "Titles and Tattoos" (2x84), she got an aquamarine tattoo highlighting her eyes and temples.[18]

Originally, Nott was a halfling woman named Veth Brenatto, who had a plump face, dark skin, and braided hair. [19][20] In "The Fancy and the Fooled" (2x97), Nott regained her halfling form and began using her original name, Veth Brenatto, though she retained the piercings and tattoos she acquired as Nott.

For her Eiselcross outfit, Veth wears a pink lolita dress with fur trim and buttons going down the front. She also wears a set of earmuffs with antlers, based off of Keyleth's antlers.

During the battle with Cree in the tunnels beneath Cognouza, Veth acquired a red eye on her forehead.[21] She gained another in an unspecified location during the fight against Lucien, the Neo-Somnovem.[22] After Lucien's defeat, all red eyes on her person disappeared.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Nott hid in the shadows a lot because she knew goblins were not welcome in the Dwendalian Empire, especially around her home town of Felderwin, where goblins frequently raided.[23]. She was described as "jumpy" and got nervous and frantic very easily. Nott had kleptomaniacal tendencies that she tempered by drinking alcohol. Her favorite whiskey is "the type that gets [her] good and drunk."[24]Nott has an intense fear and hatred of water[25], having previously been drowned to death as Veth by goblins.[26] Nott dislikes dogs and clarifies that she did not have a craving to consume the flesh of humanoid children.

Nott's normally eccentric behavior is suppressed when the lives of her friends are in danger. The personality of Veth the halfling was twisted to be more extreme when she was Nott the goblin. Veth liked to collect things; Nott was a kleptomaniac. Veth enjoyed wine every now and then; Nott was an alcoholic.[27]

Nott was slow to trust and often greeted new people by threatening them[28][29][30] or lying about her name.[31][32][33] Once she grew to care about someone, Nott had strong maternal instincts. She was very protective of Caleb,[34] and demonstrated a caring attitude to many members of the party. Nott was very invested in keeping the Mighty Nein together and making sure everyone felt like an important part of the team.[35]

Despite insisting she was not brave, Nott put herself in danger several times to save the lives of her friends or help them achieve their goals.[36][37] She also came along on two underwater dives to help Fjord despite her fear of water.

When Nott was drinking and inebriated she was immune to fear, unlike her more cautious and fearful sober self.[38] She stated several times that she believed she needed to drink to be effective in battles.[39]

Nott said several times that she disliked and mistrusted goblins, seemingly due to both her upbringing and the suffering she and her family underwent at the hands of the goblin clan near Felderwin. One of her reasons for encouraging Caleb to become more powerful was so that he could "change" her. This seemed to suggest she suffered from a form of dysmorphia or a strong self-loathing, and it was later confirmed the reason for this was that she had previously been a halfling woman, transformed into a goblin against her will. She believed that Caleb could one day become powerful enough to determine the nature of her "condition" and change her back, hence her desire for him to grow stronger.[40] In "The Fancy and the Fooled" (2x97), her dream became reality when Caleb was able to cast a Transmogrification spell to transform her back into a halfling, and she was able to reunite with her husband and son.[41]

As both Nott and Veth, she showed herself sometimes to have bloodthirsty and homicidal tendencies, especially when stressed or excited. Nott proposed or threatened killing people numerous times, even killing a guard when fearing being discovered. Veth encouraged Caleb to vengefully murder Trent Ikithon for manipulating and abusing him, believing it would allow him to get over his past, and became practically obsessed with killing Otis Brunkel because of Otis's creepy demeanor and similar race and skillset to her.

Background[edit | edit source]

Official art of the goblin raid on Felderwin, by William Kirkby and Eren Angiolini from The Mighty Nein Origins: Nott the Brave.[art 14]

Revvetha "Veth" Smyt'hh was born in the town of Felderwin. Growing up, she was often ridiculed for her peculiarities, which made it difficult for her to fit in. One day, Veth played a Spin the Bottle-type game with the local boys who dared Yeza Brenatto to kiss her. The intimacy of the kiss connected them, they became friends and, eventually, fell in love. They married when Veth was about twenty years old, five years before Campaign 2, and soon had a son, Luc Brenatto.[42][43][44]

Around the year 831 PD[fn 1] after a difficult winter, the Felderwin was raided by a clan of goblins, headed by the partnership of Drekkit and Khaaz. They burned and pillaged the village, kidnapping its residence, including the Brenatto family. Held there for weeks, the family was visited by Khaaz. Picking her teeth with a bone tooth pick, Khaaz related with the warm connection Brenatto had for each other, saying her partner was annoying, but Khaaz relied on him. Khaaz expressed that Veth seemed nice, but didn't have the goblin blood, then walked away throwing the tooth pick on the ground. Veth fished out the tooth pick, cracked the lock, and helped her family's escape, letting her husband run ahead with their new-born son while luring their captors away. Veth was cornered by the goblins and, in desperation, threw a vial of acid into their leader Drekkit, melting his face and killing him.[44] The goblins recaptured Veth, and Drekkit's wife Khaaz, frantic for revenge, took her to Isharnai with instructions to "make Veth suffer". Isharnai drowned Veth in a river, where Veth later awoke reincarnated[47] as a goblin.[43]

Veth was taken by Khaaz to serve her as the retribution for the death of Drekkit, bounced around many different jobs in the goblin clan. A part of her believed that her punishment was well-deserved, because she someone who was loved. She admitted that once, she accidentally ate part of a human baby that had been mixed into a goulash. Veth was eventually allocated to become the torturer's assistant,[48] but escaped the clan on her first day of work, bringing with her the male halfling who was tortured and feeling relieved to save a life in exchange for the life taken from Drekkit.[44] Thinking back on these events, Veth was uncertain how long she was in the clan, but estimated from six months to a year and a half.[43]

Right after she escaped, Veth headed to Felderwin hopping to reunite with Yeza, but Yeza didn't recognize her in the new form and, fearing this goblin came to deprive him even more, rallied up the villagers to banish the intruder. Anguished by the rejection and the uncertainty for the future, she decided that "Veth" is dead, changing her name to Nott the Brave and starting wearing a porcelain mask to hide her goblin features.[44][43]

At some point, Veth wound up in jail for stealing a basket of food[44] and a cherry wine.[49] There she met Caleb[50] who used Frumpkin to bring a piece of wire into their cell, which Nott used to pick the lock. Caleb proceeded to set the jail on fire and scream for help, the guards promptly fled, and Caleb and Nott walked out of the jail. The two traveled together for five or six months,[51] at first out of convenience, but then out of genuine friendship.[52]

Pre-Stream[edit | edit source]

The day before they met the rest of the Mighty Nein, Nott and Caleb were attacked by a pack of gnolls hiding in grass,[53][54] and Caleb was knocked unconscious. Nott fed him the health potion Caleb carried on his belt, saving his life.[55]

Campaign 2: The Mighty Nein[edit | edit source]

Arc 1: Come Together[edit | edit source]

While in the sewers of Zadash, Nott asked Jester Lavorre to give her the Ring of Water Walking the party found in the manticore nest within the Rill's Mouth Mines.[56]

In the Song and Supper Inn in Zadash, Fjord and Molly set up a trap to see why Nott was rifling through Fjord's things and trying to get his letter to the Soltryce Academy. While charmed by Molly, Nott revealed her desire to give the letter to Caleb so that he could fulfill his potential of becoming a very powerful wizard. She said that the rest of the Mighty Nein would not be able to help her. She expressed her fears of being discovered by the many dangers they would likely run into on their travels north, and that she needed Caleb to live so that he could protect, save, and ultimately change her form from that of a goblin.[57]

In her downtown time in Zadash, disguising herself as a little halfling girl, Nott spent an hour at a cafe just having lunch and being what she considered to be a normal person.[58] Nott then paid 5 gold pieces to send a package to someone in Felderwin, containing: a note, 50 gold pieces, a bunch of buttons, all the rings she had, a door knob, a brass baby bottle, all of her ball bearings, and the two bracelets she had.[59]

While exploring the The Gentleman's safe house in the Labenda Swamp, Nott admited to the Mighty Nein that she is afraid of bodies of water and persuaded the party to stay with Kiri, when the rest of the group went through the water tunnel into the next chamber. There, the party was attacked by merrows.[60] Nott attempted to enter the water tunnel, dipped her toes, but withdrawn, taking a swig from her flask.[61]

Arc 2: The Bad Guys[edit | edit source]

After the Mighty Nein returned to Zadash from Shadycreek Run, Nott spent the two weeks of downtime mostly shopping and crafting. She sent another package of trinkets and 100 gold pieces to an unknown location along with a note. She took apart the gun she stole from Hupperdook to figure out how the explosion is created. She attempted to use this knowledge to create explosive arrows. She managed to create one after multiple failed attempts. Nott also commissioned a pair of human skin colored gloves with fingernails embroidered on them.[62]

Nott enlisted Jester's help in forging a letter to the Soltryce Academy. They wrote a letter from a fake law firm (Nott & Brave) claiming to be looking for one of their students named Astrid because she had inherited money. Nott asked Jester not to tell Caleb about the letter. Nott believed Astrid was someone from Caleb's past who could help remember good times, but worried if he knew about the letter he would get upset. Jester promised not to tell Caleb and told Nott that Caleb had drunkenly called her "Astrid" while they were dancing in Hupperdook.[63]

Nott's hydrophobia came up again, when the Mighty Nein were preparing to dive into the lagoon of Nicodranas and swim up to the entrance leading into the Sluice Weave. Nott protested against it, but concluded that it is best to try, after Caleb successfully cast Suggestion. Accepting Beau's offer to ride on her back, Nott took a swig of whiskey and they dove together into the lagoon. Nott continuously screamed for some time afterward.[64]

After the party captured the The Mist ship and escaped the Nicodranas docks, Nott, Caleb, and Jester interrogated Gallan Westman, the only surviving member of The Mist crew. When Gallan said he was not important and did not know very much, Nott tried to cheer him up by pointing out he was the only survivor of a "brutal attack." Gallan felt better until Nott mentioned the axe that had been in his head. Nott appointed him first mate, since he is only one on board who knows how to sail besides Fjord.[65]

Caleb and Nott took the first watch that evening and talked about the previous day's events. Neither of them feel good about the way the day went. However, they were both more concerned that the rest of the members of the Mighty Nein seem unsettled. Caleb referred to the Mighty Nein as their new family and suggested they make an effort to try and boost morale. Nott agreed, telling Caleb to fake a heart attack so the group can bond over "saving" him. Caleb apologized to Nott for casting Suggestion on her to make her swim. Nott said it was ok, but please warn her in the future if he's going to do that again.[66]

Nott, Beauregard, Caduceus, and Jester spent time in Nicodranas spreading a made up ghost story to cover for an illusion Jester cast in the docks during their escape.[67]

During their watch one night at sea, Caduceus asked Nott why she has been making extremely obvious attempts to cheer up him and include him. Nott told him many of the team, not her, were outcasts before they banded together. Now that they're traveling doing (mostly) good things, they rely on each other. Nott has been trying to keep the group together. Caduceus told her he's on board with the Mighty Nein, for now. Nott asked Caduceus to stick close to Caleb and heal him once they get to the island. Nott said her time with the Mighty Nein has seemed like a sign to her even though she is not religious. She thinks it means there could be another chapter for all of them. Caduceus seemed surprised and says he thought he had Nott figured out.[68]

The next night, The Mistake fought off an attack by harpies. Caleb followed through on the plan to fake a heart attack right after the harpies were all gone. Caleb dropped the ruse after Jester fell for it and started to actually blow air into his lungs. Nott continued the ruse, saying the power of friendship healed Caleb. The group did not seem to be fooled. Fjord sarcastically asked how they can further prevent further "heart episodes". Nott responded they need only more friendship.[69] When The Mistake was damaged going through the reef, Nott hid in the crow's nest as far away from the water as possible.[70]

Near the Inkclaw Reef, Nott, with the rest of the Mighty Nein, was went aboard the Squalleater. She used the alias Gilligan when introducing herself to Avantika.[71]

Jester and Nott broke into Avantika's quarters on the Squalleater and stole her journal and some jewels. They escaped without being seen, but set off several traps and left a hole in the floor, tipping Avantika off that someone had broken in.[72]

Arc 3: The Bright Queen's Favor[edit | edit source]

"Homeward Bound" (2x48)
The Mighty Nein sailed back to Nicodranas. Nott was excited to get access to Tidepeak and for Caleb to meet Yussa Errenis. They decided to travel next to Felderwin so Nott could check in on her halfling friend Yeza (the halfling she helped escape from her own goblin clan).

Arriving in Felderwin, they discovered the Brenatto family business and home, Brenatto Apothecary, was burned down during the Kryn Dynasty attack. Two Crownsguard told Nott that Yeza has not been seen since the attack, but they had not found a body. Yeza's son Luc survived and was now staying with a woman named Old Edith. The Mighty Nein searched the ruins of the apothecary, forcing open the magically locked basement door. There seemed to have been a struggle in the basement room. Several pieces of furniture were destroyed and there were blade marks on the walls. Nott picked the lock on an iron chest in the corner of the room, and found inside a retractable silver tripod[73], a vial of a strange grey substance that appeared to be between liquid and gas[74], and several pages of notes that were mostly burned.

Only two pages were still legible. The notes described experiments with a "dumanis field" causing large areas around the laboratory where people felt sometimes sluggish and sometimes moved mysteriously faster. Intelligence from captured Kryn Dynasty operatives indicated that they had been experimenting with Dunamancy and its ability to manipulate gravity, entropy, and time. Cerberus Assembly researchers had distilled one vial of dunamis and hoped to use Yeza to make more. The notes said that Trent Ikithon (Caleb's former teacher) had some pupils that showed signs of being able to use Dunamnacy.[75][76]

Nott turned on Caleb, saying it was "your people" that were doing experiments and hurt his friend. Beau and Caleb tried to subtly signal Nott to stop talking because Caleb had not shared that he had a previous connection to Trent Ikithon with anyone except them. Nott angrily yelled "fuck him!" and said she had to go see Edith. Caleb threw up in the middle of the room. Caduceus comforted Caleb, telling him Nott's anger was not about him.

After cleaning up, the Mighty Nein left the basement and walked to Old Edith's house. Nott cast Disguise Self to look like a halfling woman before knocking on the door. When Edith opened the door, Nott immediately asked for her son. Edith looked surprised to see Nott's halfling disguise and told her she was presumed dead. Edith brought a halfling boy to the door. Luc Brenatto recognized Nott's disguised form as his mother but was confused since his father had told Luc that goblins killed his mother. When Nott asked if Luc had been getting the packages she sent, Luc said he had been getting presents but did not know who they were from. When the soldiers from Xhorhas had attacked, Yeza told Luc to hide. He ran to Old Edith. Luc told Nott "don't die" before going back inside the house.[77]

Nott gave Edith two hundred gold to help her take care of Luc. Edith addressed Nott as "Veth" and tells her that Luc was a good boy. As the Mighty Nein began to think about what to do, they noticed Vess DeRogna and Ludinus Da'leth walking towards the ruins of the apothecary.

"A Game of Names" (2x49)
After hiding from Vess DeRogna and Ludinus Da'leth, Nott told the Mighty Nein about herself and her son. Nott was born a halfling woman named Veth. She was always strange and bullied by her brothers growing up. One day, her brothers dared a boy to kiss her, but he seemed to like it. Veth and the boy, Yeza Brenatto, grew close and eventually got married. They had a son named Luc.

Goblins raided Felderwin and captured the Brenatto family. Veth distracted some of the goblins to give Luc and Yeza a chance to escape. They were able to escape, but goblins caught up to Veth. She threw a vial of acid at one of them, who turned out to be a chief. The goblins took Veth to an unknown magic woman who wore a hood. The wife of the goblin chief told the magic woman to make Veth suffer. The goblins drowned her in a river. When Veth woke up, she was the goblin the Mighty Nein know as Nott.[78]

After about a year of living with the goblin clan, Nott ran away. Since escaping she has been sending notes and packages to Luc and Yeza, but she was always unsure if they believed the packages were real. Nott was unsure what her family would think of her if they knew she was now a goblin. The thought scared her. She agreed to let Caduceus cast Lesser Restoration on her to clear the alcohol from her system and think more clearly about what to do next. The Mighty Nein decided the safest option is for Old Edith and Luc to go to Alfield, where Bryce Feelid can keep an eye on them.[79]

Nott apologized to Caleb for getting angry. After moving to a more secure location, Caleb revealed that he was born with a different name as well. His birth name was Bren Aldric Ermendrud. He shared with the rest of the party that he was once training with the Cerberus Assembly (something only Beau and Nott had known before). Caleb told the party that he lost his mind during the training and ran away. Since then he had been giving everyone he meets false names to avoid being found by the Assembly.

The next morning, the Mighty Nein learned through Caduceus casting Divination that Yeza was heading towards Ghor Dranas - the capital of the Kryn Dynasty in Xhorhas. After seeing Edith and Luc off on their journey to Alfield with an armed escort, the party investigated the tunnel the Kryn soldiers used to invade. Jester used Polymorph to transform into a giant honey badger and burrow through the collapsed section. The Mighty Nein set off on the long journey to Xhorhas.

"The Endless Burrows" (2x50)
The Mighty Nein decided to go through the tunnels in order to potentially find Yeza. While in the tunnels, the group encountered two fire giants and a river of lava. Nott bravely walked across the river to reach the other side, but fell unconscious on the way over. Beau jumped in and helped her get across safely.

"Xhorhas" (2x51)
The group managed to find their way through the tunnels until they reached Xhorhas, where they were attacked by a pack of gnolls and some Kryn soldiers.

"Feral Business" (2x52)
The Mighty Nein entered Asarius to look for faster transport to Rosohna. When Sunbreaker Olomon approached the party, Nott was very attracted to him and asked him if there was a "Mrs. Sunbreaker".[80]

Nott negotiated the deal with Zorth to purchase moorbounders at a discount in exchange for killing a creature that has moved into one of the subterranean nests where he breeds the moorbounders. Nott convinced Zorth that a tiny statue of a penis made with Jester's magical paint was actually the petrified penis of a tiny human. Zorth agreed to sell three moorbounders for six hundred gold and the "tiny dick" after the basement was clear.[81] The Mighty Nein found that the creature in the nest was actually multiple demonic dog-like creatures that had come through a portal to the Abyss in the basement.

After killing the creatures and closing the portal, the Mighty Nein took Zorth's suggestion to inform Lady Zethriss Olios (one of the Kryn Dynasty leaders in the city) of the portal. Jester and Nott, the "detectives", met with her. They introduced themselves as an investigative team and launched into a rambling explanation (with a little bit of innuendo) of the rift to the Abyss. When Lady Olios asked their for their specialities, Jester and Nott rambled again and cut each other off (briefly mentioning Jester's tattooing and Nott's drinking). However their explanation of closing the rift convinced her that they could be helpful.[82]

Lady Olios offered them two potential jobs- find a Dwendalian Empire spy suspected to be sending messages from the Four Corners or find the source of the rifts. She will pay coin for both jobs. She is also willing to offer a favor with the Bright Queen instead of coin if they find the source of the rifts.[83]

Discussing their options with the rest of the party, Nott wanted to leave right away now that they have moorbounders, but thought that having a favor from someone high up in the Kryn Dynasty would make freeing Yeza easier. The party headed outside of Asarius to rest and decide in the morning.

"Cornered" (2x53)
The Mighty Nein decided to find the source of the rifts in order a gain a favor from the Bright Queen.

"Duplicity" (2x55)
The Mighty Nein successfully closed the rifts in Asarius and reported back to Lady Olios.

"The Favor" (2x56)
Nott and the rest of the Mighty Nein beseeched the Bright Queen to release Yeza from prison.

"In Love and War" (2x57)
Yeza was reunited with Veth once again.

Arc 4: Swords and Angels[edit | edit source]

"Dark Bargains" (2x83)
While exploring the Dreadnought chamber, Caleb discovered several unfinished equations for a more permanent transformation of oneself, as well as the gem that Halas's soul was trapped in. When talking to the gem, Nott expressed her excitement about changing herself using magic.

"Titles and Tattoos" (2x84)
Caleb discussed with Nott the information that he gathered from the Folding Halls of Halas and the possibility of transforming her back into a halfling.

"Stone to Clay" (2x91)
Caleb, Nott and Essek completed the spell that could transform Nott back into her original form. The spell ultimately failed, and it was revealed that Nott had a continuing curse placed on her that prevented the transformation.

Arc 5: Family Ties[edit | edit source]

The Mighty Nein sought out Isharnai in order to remove the curse she had placed on Nott. Jester used the Dust of Deliciousness and a Modify Memory spell to convince the hag to release the curse.[84] After a brief detour, when the party was in Nicodranas in preparation for the peace talks, Nott was transformed back into Veth Brenatto and reunited with Yeza and Luc in her true form.[85]

One Rumblecusp, the night before Traveler Con, Veth wandered over to talk to Vilya, who was sitting alone at one of the tables. Veth reminded her she had a child that she must be missing, and while Vilya agreed, she was nervous to return. Veth sympathized. She herself was still not sure if she belonged at home or out in the world, but you can't delay forever. At some point, you have to go home. Vilya thanked Veth, before using Transport Via Plants to return to her home among the Ashari.[86]

Veth reunited with Yeza and Luc back in Nicodranas, and after catching up, stayed the night with them while the rest of the Mighty Nein went on to Rexxentrum.[87] The Mighty Nein returned to pick her up once Caleb received an invitation from Trent to dine at his tower with the rest of the party.[88]

Arc 6: Weird Magic[edit | edit source]

The Corecut Dagger, which was taken when the Mighty Nein defeated Avantika,[89] eventually passed to Veth.[90] She used it for several days,[91] but eventually the party realized it was cursed, and broke her connection to it.[92]

In Balenpost, Veth and Caleb had a discussion in which Caleb told her he was uninterested in being the party's leader.[93] She also picked the lock so that the Mighty Nein could enter Vess DeRogna's chambers after she did not appear.[94] Veth ingratiated herself with Dagen Underthorn by sharing her flask,[95] and, when the party discussed the possibility of joining Lucien and the Tomb Takers, expressed her distaste given that their motivations were evil.[96]

Veth's skills as a rogue aided the Mighty Nein considerably as they traversed Eiselcross. She frequently served as their scout,[97] and was the one to find the unused intuit charges at one of the Aeor sites.[98] While the monstrous baby creature the party encountered swallowed her, she was able to escape with Fjord's help.[99] During the fights against Gelidon and the Tomb Takers, her arcane abilities also served the party well.[100] She initially attempted to bond with Otis Brunkel as a fellow halfling,[101] but grew to hate him after their betrayal.[102] When Lucien asked Veth about her goals, shortly before the Tomb Takers stole the threshold crest, she told him she wanted to bring peace to Exandria, having helped broker the treaty between the Empire and Dynasty.[103] Veth also, after a few accidental interruptions,[104][105] encouraged Beau in her budding relationship with Yasha.[106]

During the heist on the Vergesson Sanatorium, Veth went in along with Caleb and Jester to retrieve the items. She and Jester were able to obtain the amulets, but she also took some time to steal some other items, at which point Trent Ikithon caught up with the group.[107] She, Caleb, and Jester narrowly escaped to Nicodranas, where Veth expressed concern for Caleb.[108] and, once they realized they had been followed, Veth tailed Astrid.[109] She then brought her family with her to Tidepeak Tower, and escaped, along with Caleb, Caduceus, and Jester, via the Planeshift spell scroll.[110]

In the Elemental Plane of Fire, she and Jester wandered off to have a discussion, and accidentally alerted a fire elemental which then attacked them.[111] Luc died in the battle, though he was quickly resurrected by Caduceus.[112][113] Veth and Yeza had a tearful conversation afterwards, in which they both blamed themselves for their respective involvement with the Cerberus Assembly. Veth promised that once she had dealt with the current danger and the Assembly, she would return home.[114] After Yeza and Luc were safely left at the Evening Nip, she promised Yeza again that she would come back permanently after defeating the threat in Aeor.[115]

Once the Mighty Nein returned to Eiselcross, Veth continued to serve as the scout, and stayed awake with Caleb when he stayed up to watch the trap the Mighty Nein had set for the Tomb Takers.[116] She also killed Otis after they were nearly killed by the intuit charges.[117] In Aeor, she was the one to find the broken aeormaton who they named Charlie,[118] and, once he was restored to his full capacities as Devexian, she was very taken with him.[119] Veth was made tiny by a magical surge shortly before the Mighty Nein entered the Astral Plane, though it quickly wore off,[120] and she and Essek did some exploring together in Cognouza.[121] While in Cognouza, Veth, like most of the rest of the Mighty Nein, gained one of the eyes of the Somnovem.[21]

Once she, along with the rest of the Mighty Nein, had defeated Lucien in his Neo-Somnovem form, Veth returned to the Blooming Grove. There, she faced her fear of water, and floated in one of the pools.[122] She brought Yeza and Luc back from Nicodranas, and put Sovereign Glue on the silencer collar for Trent after he attacked them.[123] She gave her old flask to Kingsley as a gift,[124], and, after most of the party other than Caduceus left for Nicodranas, stayed in Nicodranas with her family as she had promised while the others delivered Trent to the Cobalt Soul.[125] She later opened up a summer camp in Nicodranas to teach rogue and magic skills.[126]

Post-Campaign[edit | edit source]

Veth settled in Nicodranas and opened the Wildemount Wildlings camp, "funded" by The Gentleman, while Yeza opened the Brenatto's Better Self apothecary. In early 837 PD, she was about to have her first ever campers,[127] when she received a message from Jester asking for her help after Fjord gave over the final Cloven Crystal.[128] Veth agreed, and was picked up by Caleb.[129] She and the rest of the Mighty Nein flew to the Cyrios End Forest to attempt to retrieve the crystal.[130]

After Uk'otoa was unsealed, Veth asked Jester to contact Yeza and to tell him to bring the campers to higher ground.[131] While on the Drensala Vis, she crafted a fluffernutter,[132] and spent much of the fight against Uk'otoa shooting from the crow's nest.[133] Her contribution to the final blow on Uk'otoa was the fluffernutter.[134]

She returned, and the first session of camp was a success. Yasha,[135] Jester,[136] and Caleb all taught at her camp, and Caleb additionally tutors Luc.[137]

During the apogee solstice in 843 PD, Veth was worried about her campers and, while the Mighty Nein asked that she join them in hunting down a possibly escaped Trent Ikithon, chose to stay. Luc, by then a teenager, went along instead.[138]

"Dignity: An Adventure with Stephen Colbert" (OSx47)[edit | edit source]

Official art of Nott, by Kasia Brzezinska from "Dignity: An Adventure with Stephen Colbert" (OSx47).[art 16]

A level five Nott the Brave, along with Beau and Yasha, joined Lucky Jack in defeating the evil Madrak and recovering the holy reliquary called the Spirit of Virtue or, colloquially, Dignity.

Relationships[edit | edit source]

Beauregard[edit | edit source]

Nott thinks Beau is a cool secret agent since she revealed herself as a monk of The Cobalt Soul. The two of them have bonded mostly through their mutual friendships with Caleb. Nott seems to have little to no faith in Beau's people skills,[139] but seems impressed by her fighting abilities.

Luc Brenatto[edit | edit source]

In Nott's previous life as Veth the halfling, she and her husband Yeza had a son named Luc. Veth loved Luc and was very proud of him. She was willing to sacrifice her life to save Luc when goblins captured them.[140]

When she became Nott the goblin, she still cared for Luc and sent him presents. Luc was not aware of who the presents were from. Luc was confused when his mother appeared at Old Edith's (Nott used Disguise Self to look like Veth when she talked to him) since Yeza had told him she was dead. He did not seem to trust her or be happy to see her.[77] Nott was terrified that Luc would find out she was a goblin.[141]

Luc blossomed when reunited with his father in Nicodranas, and Nott came to visit them there several times, always using Disguise Self to maintain her former halfling appearance for Luc and rebuild her relationship with him. By the time of her transformation back into her halfling form, they were warm and loving again. Luc admired his mother, adored her crossbow, and thought that she was pretty badass for her exploits. Veth bought him a toy crossbow to practice with.[142]

Yeza Brenatto[edit | edit source]

In Nott's previous life as Veth the halfling, she and Yeza got married and had a son named Luc. Veth helped Yeza run Brenatto Apothecary. She learned how to use alchemist's tools from him. Veth was willing to sacrifice her life to save Yeza when goblins captured them. She admires Yeza's mind, describing him as brilliant.[140]

When she became Nott the goblin, she sent letters, gifts, and money to Yeza, anonymously at first and later signed as Veth. Nott had not told Yeza that she was a goblin, afraid of what he would think of her.[141] However, when Yeza was kidnapped by the Kryn Dynasty, Nott unhesitatingly went after him, with the rest of the Mighty Nein, on what seemed like a suicide mission.

When Yeza and Nott met in the prison beneath Rosohna, Nott was apprehensive about revealing her new identity. Using Disguise Self, she hesitantly and gradually showed her husband her new goblinoid form. Defying Nott's expectations and fears, Yeza proclaimed his love and acceptance of her, saying that all that mattered was that she was still her.[143]

After completing the transformation in "The Fancy and the Fooled" (2x97), Yeza and Veth celebrated with each other, now a complete family once more.

Caduceus Clay[edit | edit source]

Nott was initially suspicious of Caduceus, wondering what he wanted in return for helping them with the Iron Shepherds.[144] However, she has become more welcoming towards him, especially when he was having a mental breakdown after their fight in Nicodranas. Caduceus was also accidentally killed by one of Nott's explosive arrows under the well in Asarius.

Fjord[edit | edit source]

Nott had been supportive of Fjord's desire to learn more about his patron despite her fear of water.[145] Fjord and Nott also like to make fun of each other. Fjord jokingly told Nott a story about a ship full of buttons that sank so she would feel better about going underwater in the Diver's Grave.[146] Nott later retaliated by telling Fjord that in Xhorhas, there are thousands of eye shaped balls he can swallow.[147] There is tension in their relationship caused by Nott's belief that Caleb is the group's "leader" and she views Fjord's tendency to take charge as challenging that.

Frumpkin[edit | edit source]

Nott has eaten Frumpkin twice.[148]

Artagan[edit | edit source]

The Traveler, while mainly interacting with Jester, has had one slight encounter with Nott as well. In the battle under the Cathedral in Rexxentrum, a green hand was seen guiding Nott's crossbow and helping her aim. Jester also created a holy symbol of the Traveler for Nott, hoping that she would become one of his followers.

Jester Lavorre[edit | edit source]

Jester and Veth are very close friends. They share a similar knack for getting into trouble and get along very well, often helping each other out or teaming up to go on crazy misadventures. Veth's small size and aptitude for trickery proved to be a great complement to Jester's love of pranks and whimsical behavior. The two have also shared more serious emotional moments, sharing advice and looking out for each other. They form a self-proclaimed detective duo.

Yasha Nydoorin[edit | edit source]

Nott commented on Yasha's size, possibly intimidated by it. Later, she gave her flowers in the hopes that the large woman would not kill her.[149] Nott and Yasha bonded over being the only two members of the Nein to enjoy eating rats, though Nott prefers hers raw instead of cooked, which is Yasha's preference.[150]

Nott was very suspicious of Yasha after she had fallen under Obann's control, believing that she might have been evil the whole time.

Nott has stated that Yasha intimidates her, and that she often gets tongue tied in her presence.[151]

Caleb Widogast[edit | edit source]

Caleb and Veth are best friends[152] and love each other unconditionally, often referring to themselves as part of a family. They met when they were both going through very difficult times, and have supported each other throughout their journeys, helping each other overcome many obstacles. The two have been overly protective of each other since before they met the Mighty Nein.

Caleb cares a lot about Veth. He has taught her many magic tricks, and when she started creating her own spells, he was very impressed and proud of her. He tirelessly helped Veth find a way to be a halfling again, and was the one who finally transformed her back into her true self. He has also supported her and helped come up with solutions when Veth shared her doubts about staying with the Mighty Nein versus living with her husband and son. Veth has a lot of love for Caleb, often checking up on him and looking for ways to make him happy. Veth once described Caleb as being like a son to her.[153] Later, she said she had been attracted to him when they first met, but no longer feels that way about him.[154] Veth has told Caleb that he was the "second love of her life", to which Caleb responded, "I love you too, Veth the Brave."[155]

Sunbreaker Olomon[edit | edit source]

Nott immediately had a crush on the massive, muscular minotaur. She thought he was "fucking hot", and asked him if there was a "Mrs. Sunbreaker".

Doolan Tversky[edit | edit source]

Nott has a handkerchief belonging to Doolan Tversky. When asked about her relationship to Doolan, Nott said that Doolan would not recognize her name if it came up.[citation needed]

Otis Brunkel[edit | edit source]

Initially, Veth attempted to curry favor with Otis by relating to them, as they were both halflings in parties of larger folk. Later, Veth tried to sabotage Otis with a Phantasmal Force that Otis was unaffected by, but from there forward their relationship was soured. During the fight with Gelidon, the two attempted to hide behind Fjord. Veth held strong contempt and hatred towards Otis, seeing them as a sort of "bizarro" version of herself, and this culminated in Veth getting the killing blow on Otis.

Devexian[edit | edit source]

Veth was the one to repair Devexian's power core. She was also attracted to his voice and self-confident demeanor after he was repaired.

Character information[edit | edit source]

Quests[edit | edit source]

Nott hoped to return to her original form and reunite with Yeza and Luc. She believed that Caleb would one day be powerful enough to restore her to her halfling body, and consequently supported his endeavors to improve his arcane capabilities.[156]

Sam's flask with a to-do list taped to it. "Kill Otis" is checked off.

After developing a vendetta against Otis Brunkel, Veth became determined to be the one to kill them.[162][163]

Spells[edit | edit source]

As a 16th-level Arcane Trickster rogue and 1st-level wizard, Veth knows seven wizard cantrips (four from Arcane Trickster, three from wizard) and seventeen spells from 1st- to 3rd-level, all from the wizard spell list. She can replace the Arcane Trickster spells she knows when she gains a rogue level, so she possibly no longer knows all of these spells. Eleven of these spells are from her rogue levels; she always has these spells prepared. The other six, which are all 1st-level spells, are from her wizard level; she has these written in a spellbook, from which she can prepare four per day.

Spells in the table below are known to have been gained through her Arcane Trickster levels unless otherwise noted.

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

  • Sam initially wanted to name his Campaign 2 character Vix, because at one point in "Umbrasyl" (1x55) he said "when I die, I'm coming back as a character named Vix",[248] as a joke to mess with Liam and Laura whose characters in Campaign 1 are named Vax and Vex. However, he couldn't come up with a good anagram with this name and left only the first letter V and created the name Veth Brenatto, found the word "brave" in there, and then retrofitted it into an anagram as Nott the Brave.[249] Playing as Nott, Sam teased her actual name with aliases in early episodes: Veth (at the Cobalt Soul),[250] Bren (as Fjord's daughter)[251] and Atto (at the Hour of Honor).[252]
  • Sam was thinking of being a rogue in Campaign 2 inspired by Vax: a brilliant, cool, fast, bad-ass assassin; an archetypal rogue character. But Sam wanted to do the opposite; to be a nervous and timid rogue, starting a chain of thoughts that developed his character. Thinking about the source of her insecurity, Sam came up with the idea that Veth must be uncomfortable in her skin, but then he thought "maybe it's not necessarily her skin", and to deal with the circumstances she found herself, Veth would get often drunk.[249]
  • In the session zero he played with Liam in Matt's and Marisha's house before "Curious Beginnings" (2x01), Sam didn't do a special voice for Nott. Sam was encouraged to do it, when he witnessed Liam doing an accent for Caleb (different from the accent he did in "Curious Beginnings" (2x01)), while Sam spoke in his regular voice, which "didn't seem right". Nott's voice came together "moments" before the start of "Curious Beginnings" (2x01).[253]
  • Veth's parents are named after cast members Ashley Johnson and Travis Willingham, because their characters, Yasha and Fjord respectively, were the ones who first asked about them.
  • As a halfing, Veth has the Lucky trait allowing her to re-roll natural ones. But Sam Riegel has said he thinks the ability isn't fun, so he generally ignores it.[254] He used the feature once in an attempt to resist the Command spell cast by Jester in "The Neverending Day" (2x125), when Jester was attempting to make Veth drop the cursed Corecut Dagger.
  • Her statement that she just loves "trinkets" is an inside joke about Trinket, Vex'ahlia's bear companion from The Campaign of Vox Machina, toward whom Sam and his previous character Scanlan Shorthalt were frequently disdainful.[citation needed]

Appearances and mentions[edit | edit source]

Quotations[edit | edit source]

  • "I LOVE TRINKETS SO MUCH!" (a not-at-all ironic quote in-character as Nott)[255]
  • "This is fine." (said while inside a burning building)[256]
  • "I'll be part of this Fjord Expedition." (a pun on Fjord's name and a model of car by Ford Motor Company)[257]
  • "Are we Fjord Explorers or Fjord Escapes?"[258]
  • "He can protect me."(Nott under a charm talking about Caleb.)[259]
  • "You can reply to this message."[260]
  • "There's a bit of a misconception here. Caleb and I have a very special relationship. It is that of a parent and a child. But I am the parent. You do understand that, correct? I protect him. He's my boy. And I keep him safe. I want him to thrive and get better and better and more powerful and stronger. Because he can achieve great things. When I found him, he was nothing. He was a scared little boy in the corner of a jail cell. And as we have gotten [sigh] more comfortable, he has gotten more comfortable and come out of his shell. It's my job to protect him because I love him, and I am his protector. Not because he protects me."[34]
  • "I'm so sorry, it wasn't you, it's not your fault. It wasn't you, you were made to do it. It's not your fault, it's not your fault. I know you don't realize that now, but you will. This pain that you have that you wear all over you like a mask, it's just that and you can take it off someday. I know it hurts but it wasn't your fault. And I'm just gonna keep telling you that until you believe me...What you did was awful, truly terrible, despicable and unforgivable. Until you can forgive it. At some point, you'll have to do that. And I swear to you that I will be at your side until you do." (to Caleb)[261]
  • "I am the greatest detective of all times! I poured one drink, and I solved the case!"[262]
  • Nott: "I have to bare my teeth at everyone! Look at these things- they're huge!"
    Keg: "You have no choice?"
Nott: "No! I have very thin lips, very long teeth, some would call them fangs. It's not my fault. When I smile it looks like I'm trying to bite your throat off." [263]
  • "Molly said not to steal from happy people."[264] (response to being asked if she wanted something from Molly's corpse)
  • "Do you know Pumat Sol?" (asked of every Firbolg she's met)
  • "Are you saying to me that we made a mistake?"[265] (asked of Jester after a plan that went disastrously wrong)
  • Nott: "I'm not a religious lady. But I will tell you that, for me, this journey with this group has been a bit of a sign. And I know that you're questioning whether it was for you, but-"
    Caduceus: "What kind of sign?"
Nott: "A sign that there could be, for all of us, another chapter."
Caduceus: "Wow. I thought I had you figured out. Never mind. All right."
Nott: "I'm gonna drink now." [266]
  • "Fluffernutter!!"[267]
  • "Chemistry's good, baby, but killin' is better."[268]
  • "To Zadash!"[269]
  • (to Essek) "You are a broken person who had ill intentions and wandered aimlessly into a path that you had no intention or no idea how to complete. And yet somehow along the way, you found a heart. You sound like all of us. Welcome to the Mighty Nein.[270]
  • "Every one of us has left without saying goodbye to someone in our lives."[271]
  • Veth: Is there - are there preparations that we need to make, like ... you know, like a code word or anything? Or should we - should I bring a bomb in case things go awry?
    Jester: Ooo, good call.
    Caduceus : Really?
Fjord :Do you have a bomb just sitting around?
Jester: Yeah, a bomb's always good to have, you know around, just in case.
    Veth: I have a bomb, yes.[272]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • During a nighttime conversation with Keg, Nott claimed that she was a pretty good dancer. Nott later revealed that she was in fact only an average dancer.[273][274]
  • Though all of Sam's characters in the first two campaigns are married, Nott was the only one to already be married when she was introduced.
  • At the start of the campaign, Nott had the lowest charisma of any player character so far at 5. After her magical tattoo and returning to her Halfling form, her charisma is 7, making the lowest Ashton Greymoore at a 6.
  • Nott is the first player character to kill another player character with friendly fire.[275]
    • She is the second player character to be the direct cause of the triggering action that led to the death of a player character. The first being Percy who got Vex killed by setting off a trap in the Raven Queen's Tomb.
