Urlu Novos is a privateer who sails the Shattered Teeth as a ghost. In life, he terrorized the Ossended Host as a member of the Wanderman Assembly and captain of the Crimson Abyss. He was eventually killed by the Host in an ambush but remained in the Shattered Teeth as a ghost.

Description[edit | edit source]

In life, Novos was a dwarven man with a beard and a scarred face. He was described as "bitter and angry" at the moment of his death.[2]

In undeath, the skeletal form of Novos has moss covering the remains of his beard and his clothes are tattered. Blue flame burns within his eye sockets. He wears a torn hat.[3] After obtaining warmth, either from Fearne or Cyrillia, his eyes appear more purple in color.[4]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Before Campaign 3[edit | edit source]

Originally from Wildemount, Novos was a privateer and captain of the Crimson Abyss. He was a member of the Wanderman Assembly in the Shattered Teeth and terrorized the Ossended Host, gaining a notoriety and dread reputation. About a hundred years before Campaign 3 in 843 PD, around the mid 700s, he was ambushed by the Host during a storm at sea. Novos was killed on his ship's deck by a crossbow bolt[5] to the head in the midst of railing against the gods and shouting a curse at the sky; as he died, he smiled. By that point of battle, the Crimson Abyss was heavily damaged by cannon fire and was listing.[6][2]

However, through a bargain with the Strife Emperor,[7] he remained as a skeletal ghost, sailing aboard a Crimson Abyss materialized by his will and with a cursed crew. He haunts some of the waters surrounding the Shattered Teeth in search of his possessions and loot that were dispersed as prizes.[6]

His compass was eventually found by an individual who sought help from Jirana on Slival. Feeling that they were constantly pursued while it was in their possession, they gave it to Jirana, knowing that she would not leave the island.[8]

Campaign 3: Bells Hells[edit | edit source]

Jirana told Bells Hells of Novos while discussing travel between Slival and Kalutha, though she warned contacting Novos was dangerous. She believed that he could be called by placing his compass into the sea because he would arrive to retrieve it; she surmised this by drawing on similar stories of the cursed or pactsworn who could be summoned by dropping a marked object into their realm. She cautioned that the Crimson Abyss cannot be seized. However, she was certain that Novos was bound to obey certain rules and that he would accept powerful allies or a mutually beneficial arrangement.[6] Despite the risks, Bells Hells decided to attempt to contact him, and Jirana had Toriz bring them to the north shore of Slival to do so.[9]

The Crimson Abyss appeared almost instantly after Chetney put the compass in the water, and an extended battle ensued, during which Bells Hells realized the crew would keep reanimating. Laudna was able to call a parley with Novos, who eventually agreed to bring the party to Kalutha in exchange for both his compass and Graz'tchar.[10]

When Fearne tried to sneak into his quarters, which was forbidden, Novos caught her and asked her what she was doing. When she attempted to play it off as hoping for some rest on a nice bed, he invited her to join him when the moon was high, and then found her on deck at that time and invited her in.[11] She asked for Graz'tchar back, but he refused. When she lay down on the bed, he asked if she would share her warmth with him, and she agreed, which mechanically reduced her HP by 5, permanently, and conferred another unknown element.[12] Cyrillia was extremely angry with Fearne for this, and forbade her from going to Novos again, threatening her both after she left as well as after Novos approached Fearne the following morning.[13] Fearne and Imogen convinced Cyrillia, as the only crew member who still gave off heat due to her fire genasi heritage, to go to Novos's quarters herself, and the two had a steamy encounter.[14]

Novos enjoyed the party Bells Hells threw, but promised to end their bloodlines if they ever revealed their time aboard the Crimson Abyss had been anything but terrifying, to which they happily agreed. He provided Chetney with a list of his still-missing items to hunt down.[15]
