Queen Ulara is the queen of duergar fortress of Emberhold and the spouse to King Murghol. As an NPC, Queen Ulara is played by Matthew Mercer.

Description[edit | edit source]

Queen Ulara has long reddish hair flowing down her to the small of her back. When Ulara encountered Vox Machina, she was dressed in robes.[6]

During the second encounter with Vox Machina, Ulara's eyes, as well as the eyes of her guards, had a greenish glow.[7]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Before Campaign 1[edit | edit source]

At some point prior to Vox Machina's attack on the Emberhold, K'Varn the beholder conquered the fortress and declared his domain. It was implied that Ulara, along with her husband King Murghol, have surrendered to K'Varn to save their lives and preserve their power.[8]

Campaign 1: Vox Machina[edit | edit source]

Ulara was in the throne room of the Emberhold, when Tiberius entered the room and attempted to trick the duergar he was one of their gods. Ulara and Murghol were the only duergar to see through the deception, commanding to attack the intruders. During the ensuing fight, Ulara disintegrated the ceiling of the throne room, causing a flow of lava to flood the keep. She also dominated Grog's mind, causing him to fight for her.[9] Ulara retreated by teleporting away right before her husband's death, taking the incapacitated Grog with her. But before the queen managed to escape, Vex shifted her Hunter's Mark onto her.[9]

After Vox Machina retreated from the fortress, Vex concentrated on her Hunter's Mark to discover that the queen and Grog were still somewhere in the city. However, the party was exhausted, so they decided to sleep before trying to rescue Grog.[10] As they woke up, Vex detected with the last fading trace of her Hunter's Mark that the duergar queen was moving out of the city. Vox Machina broke camp and chased after her.[10]

Vox Machina pursued and eventually caught up with the queen and her guard on her way to Yug'Voril. They started their encounter with a negotiation, where Ulara told Scanlan: "talk, small annoying creature, and perhaps it'll delay the inevitable."[11] Her eyes, as well as the eyes of her guards, had a greenish glow. In response to their negotiation attempts, Ulara got frustrated saying they took her king from her. Took something she love, and she would take something they loved, Grog. "And she would bringing him to his greater destiny."[7]

The two groups clashed, during which Scanlan was able to capture her using Banishment. Afterwards, the group attempted to interrogate her. While doing so, K'Varn possessed her mind to use her eyes to see the group and taunt them. K'varn then killed Ulara.[12]
