Toren Gevni, referred to in his first appearance as The Serious Man, is an Unabridged in Newfaire. As an NPC, he is played by Aabria Iyengar.

Description[edit | edit source]

Toren Gevni has a tight, serious face, hence his nickname, a thin moustache, and slicked-back dark hair.[2]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Toren is cold and minimally helpful during his interrogation by the Circle of Tide & Bone despite the binding compelling him to answer. He is extremely fixated on the secrets of Empress Iomene and recreating an empire like Oldfaire.[3] Rather than be taken to the Fourth Pharos, he chooses to deliberately break his neck on the chain Oscar was using to strangle him.[4]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Before Candela Obscura Chapter 3[edit | edit source]

In 1832 CE[5] Gevni performed a ritual on a ship on which Oscar was performing. It broke the ship, causing it to capsize. Oscar was pulled to the center of this ritual and became undying as a result. Cosmo saw the events and believes his long life, though still within the bounds of a human lifespan, may be due to his proximity.[6] The ship sank, killing most of the other passengers, including Oscar's wife, daughter, and brother.[7]

Cosmo later sensed that Gevni had been an actor in a number of historical events in Hale, including the Last Great War and the Halen Civil War, believing him have been alive since at least 500 CE, making him over 1400 years old.[8] He is Unabridged.[9]

Gevni had also provided Rajan Savarimuthu's mother with artifacts from Oldfaire, which Rajan believed is part of what led to his sister's corruption by The Great Maw.[10]

Candela Obscura Chapter 3[edit | edit source]

The Circle of Tide & Bone encountered Gevni in the ruins of Oldfaire beneath Grayslate Sanatorium, working with The Great Maw.[2] Oscar, Cosmo, and Rajan all recognized him from their respective pasts, and he recognized Oscar.[11] In the fight, he was gravely wounded by Rajan, but kept alive at Oscar's request, as he believed he might have answers for them.[12] They took him back to the surface and delivered him to their chapter house.[13]

Not long after, Gevni was stabilized and bound magically by Lightkeeper Nokari, who told the circle they had one hour to speak with him and asked that they keep him alive so he could be delivered to the Fourth Pharos. They questioned Gevni, who told them he had prolonged his life via ancient rituals he had read in an unnamed ancient tome, and hoped to recreate Iomene's empire using electricity rather than magick. He recognized Oscar, but no one else. Once Oscar determined Gevni could not fix his own undying state, he attacked him with a length of chain. Gevni deliberately fell on the chain in order to break his own neck. The circle then took his belongings: a dagger much like Cosmo's own, a syringe-like Bleed containment vial, and a solid gold doorknob engraved with symbols. Nokari provided them with a cover story.[14]

The Circle of Tide & Bone later found that the doorknob opened a door to Gevni's study, which had in it a desk with search capabilities. When Cosmo dropped some of his own blood on it, he learned that Gevni had been studying their family once he had realized Oscar was immortal.[15]
