Tomb tapper


Tomb tappers are constructs with a featureless face and a maw within their chest.[1]

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Tomb tappers are tall, slender constructs humanoid in shape with featureless face and loosely hanging gray skin. They have elongated forearms. Their chest opens up into a large toothy maw. Tomb tappers carry a massive hammer.[2]

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Tomb tappers are resistant to lightning damage and immune to cold and fire damage, as well as the charmed and frightened conditions. They do not require air or sleep.[1]

Abilities[edit | edit source]

Tomb tappers sense magic within 30 feet of them and can use an action to pinpoint the location of any creature, object, or area in that range that bears magic. This sense penetrates barriers but is blocked by a thin sheet of lead. The tomb tappers can burrow through solid rock at half their burrowing speed and leave a 10-foot-wide, 20-foot-tall tunnel in their wake.[1]

Tomb tappers reduced to 0 hit points turn into a lifeless stone statue. Anything they are wearing or carrying is not transformed.[1]

Actions[edit | edit source]

Multiattack: The tomb tapper makes two melee attacks with its sledgehammer or with its claws. If it hits the same creature with both claws, it can pull that creature within 5 feet of its mouth and make a bite attack against it. If thrown, the hammer returns to the tomb tapper at the end of its turn, landing at the tomb tapper's feet if it doesn't have a hand free to catch the weapon.[1]

Known tomb tappers[edit | edit source]

In 843 PD Bells Hells encountered one tomb tapper in the Genesis Ward of Aeor.[2] The party laid low, waiting out the creature, but it did notice Laudna's presence, and released several giant scorpions out of its mouth.[3] A fight ensued, and the tomb tapper was able to grapple Orym in its mouth during combat.[4] Orym also got the killing blow.[5]
