Timpani is a shorter and rounder than an average firbolg. A shock of red hair grows on his head, comes out into a bushy mustaches, and protrudes out of his ears. He wears patched up canvas pants, a tunic, and a barn coat.[2]

While Timpani is highly skilled in druidic magic, he is bumbling and scatter-brained.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Before the Re-Slayer's Take[edit | edit source]

Timpani Guff and his companion Poogs are not the members of the Slayer's Take, Timpani was repeatedly denied the membership to the guild. Over the last few years before the events of The Re-Slayer's Take (series), Timpani discovered that monsters previously slain by the Take in the Vesper Timberland had been returning as ghosts. He had gone to tell the Slayer's Take, but they told him it couldn't be true. Timpani theorized the outbreak was connected to the former member of the Take, druid named Putridius Festerkin and the Take tried to covered it up. Thinking that nobody else would believe him either, they planned to trick four potencial adventurers by pretending to recruit them into the Take and then equipping them to fight the ghosts.[3]

Duderonomous and Timpani are old friends who, as Timpani estimated, haven't seen each other for 86 years before the events of the Re-Slayer's Take. Timpani affectionately called him Dudey, and Duderonomous affectionately called him Timi.[4]

The Re-Slayer's Take[edit | edit source]

Between 837 and 843 PD,[fn 1] Timpani and Poogs sent out letter to four chosen adventurers, saying they were recruited by the Slayer's Take and they should arrive in Himblewood to accept their admission. Timpani, introduced by his colleague Poogs, performed before the potential guild members, explaining that the Slayer's Take purpose was to protect the innocent from the dangerous monsters that live in the Vesper Timberland. Timpani picked out the group to join him on stage as volunteers. Poogs then wheeled out a curtained box containing a monster, as Timpani explained that this was an example of a monster that they might face once they joined the Take. The box was unveiled, and inside was a gelatinous cube contained within a glass box. As Timpani continued his spiel, he tripped into the glass, breaking it and releasing the gelatinous cube, which slided through the wooden slats of the stage.[5]

At dusk, the party traveled outside of town to the base of the nearby mountain, as was agreed, and meet Timpani and Poogs at a campsite. Timpani gave each of them Slayer's Take badges. After they had dinner, Timpani told the group a ghost story, the Timberblight of Dead Man's Table. A howling cry punctuated the tale. Timpani thought it was Poogs, but it wasn't. As he pondered a boom sound ringed from the mountain, illuminating the forest in a violet light, and an avalanche barreled towards the party.[5]

After outrunning the avalanche and defeating the undead with the help of the rest of the party, Timpani sheepishly admitted that he wasn't actually a member of the Slayer's Take, having been repeatedly been denied membership. He further explained his discoveries regarding the surge of undeath in the region near Himblewood. He added that they're free to leave, but they affirmed they're staying to help. Timpani introduced the party to Gurt Stumpstuck.[3]

Relationships[edit | edit source]

While in Josgren's Hollow environs, Poogs has been quietly jealous thinking about the friendship between his pal Timpani and Janet. Idrin Shadowstep talked to Poogs, saying that anyone could have more than one best friend. Poogs mulled it over and decided to forgive Janet, who was surprised the goblin felt any animosity, and gave Poogs a fist bump. After defeating the whispering mouther, Timpani took Poogs aside and re-affirmed that they were best friends, giving him a harmonica he took from Janet's caravan.[6]
