Timeline of Midst

Midst takes place in 624 beginning in the tenth month of the year and progressing into the twelfth month. The following is a timeline of the series. It contains a number of significant events that occurred before the first episode, "Unrise" (Midst 1x01).

Timekeeping[edit | edit source]

Kozma Laszlo's pocket watch has multiple complications, by Third Person.[art 1]

Timekeeping in the cosmos is suggested to be complicated, and hourly times such as 4am are directly stated to be approximations of real-world hours: "By the way, all these times are approximations. We won’t describe to you what their clocks look like. It would hurt too much."[1] Days, at least on Midst, seem to be about 25 hours long, presuming from midnight occurring around the twenty-fifth hour.[2]

Days are known to use the same names as real-world days, and a week is also seven days long.[3][4] The calendar has at least twelve months.[5] In 624, the following months are known to have at least these numbers of days: 38 in the seventh month,[6] 43 in the ninth,[6] 42 in the tenth,[6] and 44 in the eleventh.[7]

The cosmos also uses traversals, a unit of time based on the current of the Fold.[8] They are used by societies in the Fold[9] and in the Un.[10] The length of a traversal is measured by a time-buoy as it travels along the Mediun, presumably from the Fount to the Delta, as tracked by an organization of Timekeepers.[11] A traversal appears to be similar to a year, as Imogen Loxlee describes herself as not having been asked to dinner in "well over 50 traversals", the length of time since her husband was killed.[12] Years are also separately referred to.[13][14]

A "pre-year" is mentioned, but its meaning is not explained.[15]

Dates are consistently written in DD.MM.YYY format in the Fold, the Un, and the Mediun.[16][17][2]

Weepe arrives on Midst to bury Saskia. He finds her, in her other body, dying in cabaret. He insists that he needs to kill Lark and the rest of the Breach and that he has no choice but to hurt others. She dismisses this as fatalistic cowardice and refuses to forgive him for willfully hurting her. Realizing that he is also dying, she asks him to end this without hurting anyone else as she dies. Weepe leaves the cabaret and strangles Imelda to death.

  1. The time since Costigan's dismissal and Spahr's appointment as Prime Consector is given in traversals rather than years. See § Timekeeping for an explanation of traversals relative to years.

  28. "Fault" (Midst 3x08) at 12:15.
  29. This occurred the day before "Scry" (Midst 1x07). "Zero" (Midst 1x06) at 16:16. Ettie: When, when should we come to see you? [...] / Lark: Fold. Tomorrow.
  30. Ellie remarks that the cabaret is "doing the nudes tonight" ("Scry" (Midst 1x07) at 5:06). Per Episode II Appendices | Black Candle Cabaret (backup link), the burlesque show is on Thursdays.
  31. "Zero" (Midst 1x06) at 20:39. Narrator 2: "[in reference to Phineas and the gala] Got a big party next week."
  32. "Trust" (Midst 1x10) at 4:43. Atticus is in a particularly good mood, suggesting that he has already confirmed the cabaret is aiding the Breach.
  33. Tzila's comment indicates that the night's show features nudity ("Trust" (Midst 1x10) at 2:13). Per Episode II Appendices | Black Candle Cabaret (backup link), the burlesque show is on Thursdays.
  34. Phineas and Spahr arrived on Midst in the evening before "Loose End" (Midst 1x13), per "Loose End" (Midst 1x13) at 2:49. It takes about three days to travel between the Highest Light and Midst traveling directly, per "Imbalance" (Midst 3x01) at 3:17 and "Switcheroo" (Midst 3x06) at 0:18. Three days inclusive from their arrival date is the 33rd, so they cannot have left later than that.
  35. Phineas and Spahr are imminently approaching Midst at the end of "Descent" (Midst 1x11). They arrived the evening before "Loose End" (Midst 1x13), per "Loose End" (Midst 1x13) at 2:49.
  36. This occurs the day before "Remains" (Midst 1x14) as Tzila says, upon she and Phineas finding Fuze's body, that she delivered the letter the day before (13:47).
  37. Weepe mails a package every morning, so presumably this took place the night before he sends the "lighter" package in "Accounting" (Midst 1x15) (0:07).
  38. 38.0 38.1 Occurs same day as "A Good Man" (Midst 1x18). Narrator 1: Well, she's late because (in addition to playing with her friends this very morning) she was also pulled into a murder investigation, interrogated by Jonas Spahr and Phineas Thatch, and—having been released from their ship—is currently venting to Lark in Goe's Garag. ("A Good Man" (Midst 1x18) at 2:31)
  39. Imelda appears to be preparing for the announcement at the end of the episode. "Accounting" (Midst 1x15) at 20:07. Narrator 3: "She’s putting on her coat and cranking the teletheric up." / Imelda: "Hmmm... Let’s just say... you beat the rush." She additionally clarifies to Weepe later in "Convergence" (Midst 1x17) at 13:28 that the sale is what she was referring to when she described his decision as timely.
  40. "Convergence" (Midst 1x17) at 15:59. Imelda asks Phineas to perform a task (raid the cabaret) at the end of the episode, placing this as just before "A Good Man" (Midst 1x18).
  41. The moon explodes directly at the end, placing this as ending seconds before "Moonfall" (Midst 1x19). "A Good Man" (Midst 1x18) at 23:31.
  42. Midst (@midstpodcast) on Twitter: "Episode XIX Appendices | A real-time report of exteme Fold fluctuation..." (August 2, 2023). (backup link)
  43. "Shelter" (Midst 2x01) at 1:13. Narrator 2: Oh, yes, that’s right, utterly doomed Midst at pretty much the moment where we last saw it. Well, that’s not quite true. / Narrator 1: It’s a few hours later.
  44. "Ascendancy" (Midst 2x02) at 1:11. Occurs the same day as the moonfall. Additionally, Imelda directs Spahr 13:36 to make a statement shortly, which is later heard during "Weather" (Midst 2x04) at 4:46.
  45. This picks up exactly from the end of "Shelter" (Midst 2x01), where Lark has Phineas at gunpoint.
  46. This occurs directly after "Shelter" (Midst 2x01).
  47. It takes about three days to travel between the Highest Light and Midst traveling directly, per "Imbalance" (Midst 3x01) at 3:17 and "Switcheroo" (Midst 3x06) at 0:18. Those aboard Spahr's ship left the afternoon of the 37th, and three days inclusive dates their earliest arrival on the 39th. It is suggested they arrived at least the day prior to "Sugarcoat" (Midst 2x05): Imelda says it is Weepe's first day, per "Sugarcoat" (Midst 2x05) at 7:39; it is brunch hours; and it has been apparently long enough since arrival that Weepe has thought about sleeping. Weepe additionally estimates that he arrived "the other day" before "Sugarcoat" (Midst 2x05), per "Sugarcoat" (Midst 2x05) at 11:10, but he is disoriented about the day cycle.
  48. "Security" (Midst 2x07) at 19:21. Narrator 2: But just with everything that's happened in the last few days with Phineas and Midst and Sherman, he's feeling off-balance.
  49. "Wake" (Midst 2x08) at 13:35. Narrator 2: Difficult to tell exactly what time of day it is— / Narrator 1: —or even how many days have passed, Narrator 2: without the telltale benchmark of the moon as reference.
  50. Specifically said to be days later, assumed to be the same day as 2x10 because this takes place the same day as 2.12.

  55. Phineas and Lark left Midst three days before 3.01. Additionally, this is said to have happened "a few days" after 2.13
  56. This occurred the day before "Change" (Midst 3x03). "Change" (Midst 3x03) at 1:10. Midst (@midstpodcast) on Twitter: "Season 3, Episode III Appendices | An Unfortunate Headline In The Unlight Herald" (February 28, 2024). (backup link)
  57. Almanac says that the community event is on Friday.
  58. Must have occurred same morning as 3x03, as indicated by approaching storm
  59. Hieronymous and Saskia arrived in the Highest Light after three days of travel, per "Switcheroo" (Midst 3x06) at 0:18, on the morning of 10.12, per Midst (@midstpodcast) on Twitter: "Season 3, Episode VII Appendices | The Loxlee Kitchen's Evening Menu" (March 27, 2024).
