Melora, the Wildmother, Serataani in Marquesian, and an-Melzidanye in Goblin, is the goddess of wilderness and the sea.[6] She watches over nature, ensures good harvest, grants protection during raging storms, guides the passage of ships, and preserves the wilderness and those who seek her blessing in concord.
In the realm of Tengar before her arrival to Exandria, Melora was called Ash.[7]
As an NPC, The Wildmother is played by Matthew Mercer in Critical Role and Aabria Iyengar in Exandria Unlimited. She is played as a player character in her mortal avatar Asha by Taliesin Jaffe in Downfall during Campaign 3: Bells Hells.
Description[edit | edit source]
Melora is depicted as a beautiful woman with green or deep brown skin with a strong, full figured body, and she is nearly fully enveloped by wild tangle of hair, leaves, and vines. Her image is often found carved into wooden reliefs and idols in groves and rural shrines.[8]
When the Prime Deities were leaving Exandria and locking themselves behind the Divine Gate, the Wildmother was one of the few who were opposed this idea and didn't want to leave Exandria. She thought that she couldn't survive without nature and her creations.[9]
Biography[edit | edit source]
Arrival and creations[edit | edit source]
Ash, along with other deities of Exandria, escaped their home plane of Tengar, losing an aspect of their eternality and infinite nature. Ash realized they needed a new place to stay, and she found Exandria.[7] After the gods created mortals, she was given the name Melora.
Melora and Erathis, through their passionate love, created the humankind as the third race on Exandria. They granted humans passionate hearts as well but also a chaos that blessed them with the ambitions, mirth, and curiosity of their two creators but also cursed them to be too short-lived to fully fulfill these impulses.[10]
Some tales say that Wildmother created the aarakocra as storm shepherds who move the clouds across the sky, and some aarakocra tribes play a sport that reflects this legend called h'aara-shie, or "cloud chasing".[11] Tabaxi are rumored to have been born from the dreams of Melora in jungles within the more temperate regions of Wildemount.[12]
The Calamity[edit | edit source]
During the Calamity, Zehir ambushed and killed many followers of Melora near one of her shrines. Her screams created the tortuous, thorny Lushgut Forest, which crushed the followers of Zehir and sent them into retreat.[3]
In one of the last battles of the Calamity, Melora and her Free Children battled Bane and his goblinoid legions, this time on the Beynsfal Plateaus of the Rifenmist Peninsula, where Bane was defeated and his armor was scattered across the region. The site of the battle was reduced to ash, and plants wouldn't grow there ever again.[13]
Towards the end of the Calamity, the Wildmother planted a seed in the most desolate place in the world before withdrawing beyond the Divine Gate along with the rest of the Prime Deities. That place is now the Barbed Fields of Xhorhas, where the huge tree stands alone in the middle of dangerous plains. Called the Arbor Exemplar, it is considered the sister of the Seed of Rebirth in the The Abundant Terrace, the main temple of the Wildmother in Vasselheim.[14][15]
Downfall[edit | edit source]
The Wildmother took the form of Asha during the divine truce that resulted in the eventual destruction of Aeor by the gods. After resuming her form, she, along with the Arch Heart, were among the more resistant to the idea of the Divine Gate when initially proposed.[16] She then took The Lawbearer's hands and told her she wasn't angry that The Lawbearer had sent The Emissary instead. The two spoke of the forest with rules and a perfect tree The Wildmother had made for The Lawbearer, and then walked away together.[17]
Campaign 1: Vox Machina[edit | edit source]
The Spire of Conflux was one of several Vestiges of Divergence found by Vox Machina while gathering power to defeat the Chroma Conclave.[18]
Keyleth invoked Melora's name as she cast her last Feeblemind spell on Raishan.[19] Raishan had originally been cursed by a priest of Melora.[20]
Campaign 2: The Mighty Nein[edit | edit source]
Arc 2: The Bad Guys[edit | edit source]
After their encounter with the Iron Shepherds, the remaining members of the Mighty Nein sought out the priest located in the Blooming Grove, a holy site to Melora, in order to avenge Mollymauk Tealeaf's death and free their friends from captivity. They discovered Caduceus Clay there, who joined the party to help find a cure for the rapidly spreading disease plaguing his home temple.[21]
In Nicodranas, the Mighty Nein visited the Mother's Lighthouse in order to find some information about the recent whereabouts of Marius LePual.[22]
After being banned from Darktow Island, Caduceus used Divination asking the Wildmother where the safest place to port and repair the Squalleater would be. She responded back, "Bisaft Isle brings you safest harbor in what you seek." After casting the spell, Caduceus felt more confident on the seas.[23]
At sea, Caduceus Clay cast Divination, asking The Wildmother what Fjord's former mentor Vandran was doing. He heard a warm voice along with an unexpected warm wind on a cold night say "Staying out of sight. Making amends."[24] While the Mighty Nein were trying to figure out who had kidnapped Yeza Brenatto, Caduceus Clay once again cast Divination asking The Wildmother, "What is Yeza's destination?" He felt the wind around him pick up and a voice speak through the wind: "Ghor Dranas".[25]
Arc 3: The Bright Queen's Favor[edit | edit source]
When Jester Lavorre cast Revivify on Caduceus Clay after Nott accidentally killed him with an explosive crossbolt, for an instant she felt a presence and saw a matronly smile and a figure with tumbling hair in the shadows. Jester told Caduceus she saw The Wildmother looking over him and smiling. While in darkness, Caduceus had a vision of green fields, ice-covered land, a fiery forge, and glimpses of scattered historical families. A warm breeze blew east past the mountains and the wastes. Caduceus mysteriously felt like he was on the right path.[26]
Caduceus Clay cast Commune while the Mighty Nein camped near the Arbor Exemplar in the Barbed Fields. He asked if the tree was hers. The Wildmother responded it was her last and final seed. He asked what was keeping her away. She responded that the land was still scarred since the gods all left. He finally asked if he was here to fix the landscape. She responded: "It's too big to fix. Your path is your own."[27] That night, Fjord dreamed of Uk'otoa threatening him, when a voice said "Come with me, child." He swam into a small chamber of tangled vines and roots, and the voice spoke once more, "The womb I grant, but withers without faith. His will shall find you again... but until it does, rest." That same night, Caduceus also had a vision of a mountainous area with a volcano. Shards of green glass were thrown into the magma and turned purple in color. The vision then shifted to a jungle oasis holding a temple next to a pool. The same crystals were placed in the water and grew roots like a germinated seed.[28] While on their night watch, Fjord told Caduceus about the vision he had the night before under the tree. Caduceus explained that the voice he heard is the Wildmother, the deity that Caduceus's family worships. Fjord shared that he had been surrounded in warmth and wanted to feel that again. Caduceus taught Fjord how to meditate, and he heard the familiar sound of waves crashing on the shore.[29]
Arc 4: Swords and Angels[edit | edit source]
The Mighty Nein visited the Cinderrest Sanctum under Kravaraad in search of someone who could reforge the Star Razor for Fjord.[30] After traveling to Uthodurn, Caduceus cast Commune, asking the Wildmother if she could give Fjord his magical powers back. She responded with a definitive yes.[31] While meditating, Fjord saw Melora's face in the sky. She told him the seed of darkness in him was too deep for her to heal, but she could help him if he would swear to protect all that is hers. He agreed without hesitation, and she gave him her boon as tendrils of seaweed encased him.[32] In the morning, he awakened stronger and officially became her paladin.[33]
At the Xhorhaus, after realizing that they had been Scryed upon, Caduceus cast Commune to ask the Wildmother about it. She affirmed that it had been someone in the Kryn Dynasty, that it was not Essek, and that it was by command of the Bright Queen. During the communion, Fjord and Caduceus's hair unexpectedly moved to an invisible gust of wind.[34] While in the Folding Halls of Halas, Caduceus cast Commune once more and learned that Yussa Errenis was still alive, but not in either the Dreadnought chamber or the Crystal Mines.[35]
Fjord was given a holy symbol of the Wildmother by Caduceus after maintaining his sense of self throughout his battle with Uk'otoa.[36] Fjord used his downtime in Rexxentrum to meditate and allow himself to be more open to the Wildmother. After some time focusing, a calm breeze washed over his mind and he heard the familiar sounds of the ocean waves.[37]
Arc 5: Family Ties[edit | edit source]
The Mighty Nein visited the Menagerie in order to help Caduceus complete the quest given to him by Melora.[38] Caduceus and Jester were able to restore the petrified members of the Clay family and several of the Stone family as well. Caduceus fulfilled the last step of the visions the Wildmother had sent him by dropping his transformed residuum crystals into the pool in the Menagerie. He then gave the crystals to his sister Calliope, and asked her to plant them within the Blooming Grove in his stead.[39]
After Fjord was revived successfully by Caduceus and had the Cloven Crystal taken out of him, he began to remember the cold isolating darkness that came along with death as he slept. Melora sent a "bloom of green and warm blossom" that helped wash away the lingering anxiety and fear.[40]
Caduceus successfully cast Divine Intervention for the first time and asked the Wildmother about Vokodo's true nature. He was shown that Vokodo had fled from the Astral Plane while being pursued and crashed on Rumblecusp, dragging slivers of multiple other planes with him.[41] As Caduceus was trying to meditate in the evening, visions of the floating city in the Astral Sea flooded his mind once more. He felt afraid and a cold chill shot through his body, knowing that this entity was a perversion of the values he held dear. The next day, Caduceus cast Commune, asking the Wildmother if she knew anything about this creature. She responded back with a cold breeze, indicating she didn't know what this creature was or if it was coming for them.[42]
Caduceus cast Commune, asking the Wildmother if the Traveler was being reasonably honest about his plans for Traveler Con the following day. She responded only with a comforting embrace, indicating she didn't know the answer.[43]
Arc 6: Weird Magic[edit | edit source]
The Wildmother spoke to Fjord while aboard the Midnight Hammer, and he took the Oath of the Open Sea[44] as a paladin in her service. The same day, Caduceus cast Commune, asking the Wildmother about the locations of Cree and Lucien. A warm breeze indicated that they were both ahead of them in the Biting North. He then asked if Vess DeRogna knew more about the Tombtakers than she let on. A stagnant chill indicated uncertainty.[45]
Caduceus cast Commune, asking if Essek could help them on their quest, if the red eyes on Beau and Caleb could be used against them, and if the Tomb Takers needed a sacrifice. Caduceus first saw a twinkling star in the distance, promising safety and comfort for them. Then, he saw the nearby fog thicken, showing uncertainty to the second question. Finally, after a brief pause, a cold breeze came through the jungle to signify Melora saying no.[46]
Caduceus successfully used Divine Intervention and was able to find the location of the secret entrance utilized by the Tombtakers to enter the ruins of Aeor.[47]
After seeing Caleb unsuccessfully cast Raise Dead on Lucien's body with the intent of resurrecting Mollymauk, Caduceus quietly decided to use Divine Intervention and beseech the Wildmother to bring Molly back to life. After a successful intervention, the person - later to be named Kingsley - was able to open his eyes again for the first time.[48]
Mighty Nein post-campaign[edit | edit source]
After servants of Uk'otoa attacked the Nein Heroez about year since their battle with Lucien, Fjord felt his connection to the Wildmother grow cold,[49] though he was still able to perform his paladin abilities.[50] The following day, the Mighty Nein came upon a statue in the Cyrios End Forest that Caleb and Fjord recognized as the Wildmother.[51] The statue held a green gem, which provided Fjord with a small sensation similar to that of the Wildmother's presence,[52] and which Caleb Identified as carrying a blessing.[53]
Zehir recognized and disapproved of Fjord's pact with Melora, but permitted him to make a separate pact with him to ensure Uk'otoa was sealed.[54] Later, while fighting Uk'otoa, Jester called upon the Wildmother before casting Dawn.[55] The Wildmother, after Uk'otoa was sealed again, freed Fjord of his pact with Zehir.[56]
Exandria Unlimited[edit | edit source]
While trying to search for something to help translate the rune the party found in the Rifenmist Jungle, the group began to hear Melora's voice in the jungle. She then created a challenge for the party that involved fighting a feymire crocodile. The party eventually won after Opal was able to subdue the creature by flipping it on its back.[57]
Campaign 3: Bells Hells[edit | edit source]
The Gorgynei told Chetney that they worship a wilderness spirit known as Sahyaadon, who some believe to be an aspect of the Wildmother (known in Marquet as Seraatani).[58] In the temple of Sahyaadon, Zha'Vrollo, there is a stone statue of her, in which she is holding an empty sheath.[59] After Chetney's trial, Orym noticed the scent of his late husband, Will, emanating from the statue.[60] He placed his shortsword in the sheath, from which vines were growing, and when he drew it out, the hilt had been changed to include a decoration of ivy.[61]
While Fearne and Orym were separated immediately following the onset of the Red Solstice, Fearne prayed to the Wildmother at her shrine in Uthodurn, but was unsure if she received an answer.[62] Some time later, Orym felt a warm breeze while performing the ritual to seal Delilah within the Pinion of Service.[63] When the party traveled to Vasselheim the following day, Keyleth took Bells Hells to the Birthheart, where Orym communed with the Wildmother. When he asked, she showed him a vision of Predathos's sealing, and comforted him after it disturbed him.[64] She then showed him Will, who was in her realm, and Orym briefly spoke to him before returning.[65] Back in the Birthheart, when Orym withdrew Seedling, he found it had been exalted, as a Relic of the Red Solstice.[66]
Relationship[edit | edit source]
The Wildmother is in a relationship, albeit fractured, with the goddess of civilization and law, Erathis. The fractured nature of their relationship reflects the disparity between civilization and nature, and Melora greatly wishes for the two to return to the harmony they once had.[8]
Taliesin described Melora as a god of a bigger picture who had a grudge on the Matron, because the Matron held the domain Melora wanted for herself. Melora and Pelor, both nature-focused gods, accepted the Matron while fighting alongside her in Aeor, and the Clay, Stone, and Dust families were the product of the newly established relationship between Melora and the Matron.[67]
Worship[edit | edit source]
- Protect the untamed wilderness from exploitation and destruction.
- Slay abominations and other mockeries of nature.
- Embrace and respect that which you cannot control in this world. Exist in harmony with it.
— from the Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting Reborn[8]
Melora is associated with a force of nature, often standing in opposition to Erathis, god of civilization, and druids of Melora and clerics of Erathis work together to preserve the balance between them. When this balance is upset, the two goddesses grow furious, and their fury manifests as devastating natural disasters.[8]
Some of the Ashari worship Melora,[68] however, Keyleth was much less devout than others before she acquired one of Melora's vestiges.[69]
The Wildmother's holy day is Wild's Grandeur, celebrated on the vernal equinox.
Issylra[edit | edit source]
The district of Vasselheim known as the Abundant Terrace is dedicated to the Wildmother.[70] In such a cold environment of Issylra, it is Melora's blessing that allows the land there to be fertile and grow crops from many different places, providing the city with the majority of its food. The temple in this district devoted to her worship is called the Birthheart.[6]
Tal'Dorei[edit | edit source]
In the inhospitable realm of the Neverfields in northern part of Tal'Dorei, most of the frost giants worship the Wildmother to embrace the harsh nature of their lands and seek her guidance to safely cross the ice fields. Other giants, who have suffered near-death experiences, secretly join one of the cults of the Chained Oblivion, accepting the inevitability of misery among the eternal cold of the Neverfields and seeking the solace within their adversities.[71][72]
Wildemount[edit | edit source]
Worship of the Wildmother is banned in the Dwendalian Empire.[73]
Outside of the Empire, there are five notable holy sites or shrines dedicated to the Wildmother that are currently known and many others hidden from the common eye:
- Blooming Grove: Magically-warded sanctum in the Savalirwood near Shadycreek Run that contains graves of people who had been touched by the Wildmother.[74] Caduceus Clay and his family tend to the graveyard in the grove. This site is a gift to the Archeart.[75]
- Mother's Lighthouse: Lighthouse in Nicodranas dedicated to the worship of the Wildmother.[76] It had been kept by Lightkeeper Gladys for her entire 86-year life.[77]
- Cinderrest Sanctum (also known as "The Kiln" or "The Burning Lodge"): Caduceus Clay's allies of the Dust family has their home in the Underforge of the Wildmother, a gift to The Allhammer located within Kravaraad.
- Arbor Exemplar: Lone, massive tree located in the Barbed Fields of Xhorhas. The Arbor Exemplar is surrounded by verdant grass which grows out a hundred feet or so during the night and then retracts during the day.[78] The Arbor Exemplar is the sister tree of the Birthheart in Vasselheim.[79]
- The Menagerie: Holy site created and maintained by the Stone family at the behest of the Wildmother and as a gift to the Changebringer.[80] It's located in the jungles southwest of the Whitedawn Lagoon.[81]
- Altars to Melora are scattered throughout the Velvin Thicket.[82]
Symbols and artifacts[edit | edit source]
Melora symbol is a wreath of grass and grain affixed to a crook,[5] or a swirl carved into stone with slow cascading spiral and a wave crest at the center.[83]
During the Calamity, the Wildmother was involved in creation of three Vestiges of Divergence. The joint efforts of two worshipers of Melora and Sehanine forged a longsword, the Star Razor.[84][85] It is described as carrying "the blessing of the fiercest full moon and starlit night"[84] or as "bright with the light of the bold full moon and the enigmatic starlit night".[86] Moreover, the Wildmother's breath created the Spire of Conflux, a druidic staff channeling spells upon its wielder's command,[87] and she bestowed the Hide of the Feral Guardian, a polished and beautifully detailed leather armor, to on a long-forgotten archdruid and champion of the natural world.[88]
After the Divergence, in 843 PD, her recent follower Orym placed his sword Seedling into the holy tree of the Birthheart and communed with the Wildmother. When Orym withdrew the Seedling, he found it had been exalted, as a Relic of the Red Solstice.[89]
