Vasselheim is the capital of human civilization on the continent of Issylra. It is predominantly a religious city with several districts, each dedicated to a patron deity. Vasselheim is sometimes called the Dawn City, the Cradle of Faith, or the Cradle of Creation, as it is considered the origin of civilization and various religions.
Description[edit | edit source]
Located in the region of Othanzia within Vesper Timberland, Vasselheim itself is built at the steps of a massive mountain called the Heaven's Stair[4] approximately 20–30 miles inland from the Ozmit Sea. Each district of the city risen above the Timberland atop a series of plateaus.[5]
Vasselheim has layers of walls, varying in age and composition, armed with dragon-headed ballistae.[6] The streets are unpaved and made mostly out of packed mud.[7] The only conventional way to enter the city is by foot, as the journey to Vasselheim is considered a religious pilgrimage made through the dense and hazardous Vesper Timberland.[1]
Vasselheim has a large mining operation of cobalt in the nearby mountain. Many of the stores tend to sell supplies for miners and workers that operate in the mountain.[8]
Points of interests[edit | edit source]
- Siren's Succor: Tavern in an unidentified district.[9]
- Skyship platform constructed on top of a mill.[10]
- Timpani Guff's apartment: Two story apartment building in outer Vasselheim. Timpani's apartment is filled with junk. A park with a single tree at the center is nearby.[11]
Silver Talon's Reach[edit | edit source]
The Silver Talon's Reach is a district dedicated to the worship of Bahamut, the god of life and order.[12] It placed at the very northern part of the town attached to the Heaven's Stair.[13] The priesthood for this district are the Scalebearers.
- Heaven's Stair: Mountain overlooking Vasselheim that bisects the northern region of the city.[14][15]
- Platinum Sanctuary: The oldest known temple to Bahamut in the world. The Horn of Orcus that Vox Machina recovered from K'Varn is interred here.
Braving Grounds[edit | edit source]
The Braving Grounds district is dedicated to the deity of war Kord. The district is the west part of the city, which greets weary travelers incoming from Glasswalk Road. It runs northward from the city through the Vesper Timberland and toward the Zenwick Mountains. The Braving ground's priesthood is the warriors of the Dawn Fist.[16] In the aftermath of Vecna' assault on the city, many homes of the Braving Grounds were destroyed.[17]
- The Crucible: Arena fighting pit where Grog challenged the previously reigning champion, known as Kern "the Hammer".
- Earth titan, locked in place at the edge of the Braving Grounds, at the border with the Quadroads towards the center of the city.[18]
- Statue of Kord: Atop the Trial Forge, a gargantuan statue of Kord loomed over the entire district. The statue depicted a musclebound titan of a figure standing heroically with a giant beard, bracers on his arms, and one knee raised.[19]
- Trial Forge: The local sacred temple to the patron god, Kord. It also served as a meditation and physical training center.[20]
- Temple of Renewal: Recently discovered ancient temple of Sarenrae within the Braving Grounds. It had been buried under the fallen tower of Syrac.[21]
- Victor's workshop[22]
Quadroads[edit | edit source]
The Quadroads is the central district of the city[23] that venerates the law and civilization associated with the god Erathis. The district is named for the four roads, incoming from every other district of Vasselheim. They form two main routes and meet up together in the middle of the city[24] into a large bazaar.[25] Its priesthood is known as the Holy Paramours.
- The Crown of Erathis: Temple to Erathis in the Quadroads, overseen by a priesthood known as the "Holy Paramours". In cooperation with all the other temples of the Dawn City, it cradled ancient texts that speak of long forgotten deities of the Founding and creation of Ruidus, keeping them as their sacred secret and fearing to share them with the rest of Exandria. Around 843 PD, agents of Grim Verity stole them without a blood letting and stored them in Yios.[26]
- The Slayer's Take: Local hunting guild which Vox Machina were coerced into joining.
- Forscythia's shop: Operated by a hag Forscythia.
- Bazaar: Accommodates mostly foreign, traders selling exported goods.[27] Former location of Cidrick Gillsman.
- Sore Socket Haberdashery: Hat shop owned by Deirdre.[28]
Abundant Terrace[edit | edit source]
The Abundant Terrace is the district of Vasselheim devoted to the worship of Melora, goddess of the wilderness and the sea.[29] Located in the western part of the city,[30] it consists mostly of wooded areas and farmland and provides most of the food for Vasselheim. Various enchantments in the district keep the weather mild, allowing for year-long harvests from its orchards.[31]
It is the location of the Seed of Rebirth, a tree which legend says was planted by the Wildmother, the sister tree to the Arbor Exemplar in the Barbed Fields of Xhorhas.[32]
- The Birthheart: The main temple to Melora, which is an ascending series of tiered and irrigated gardens.
- Midnight Breath Tavern: Tavern co-owned by Dagon.[33]
Duskmeadow[edit | edit source]
The Duskmeadow district is the southeastern part of the city[34] dedicated to the worship of the goddess of fate and death, the Raven Queen, celebrating death as a part of life. Although the buildings are dark and colorless,[35] it appears lively in contrast to the other parts of the city and the morbid celebration is constant here. Its priesthood is the leaderless order of dark-veiled maidens of the Raven Queen known as the Trust of Winters.[36]
"Hundreds of years" before 810 PD, a battle caused a plague of undead at the location of the future Duskmeadow district. To ward themselves from potential future incursions of undead, people of Vasselheim have applied repeated glyphs throughout the area, including lining the corners of roadways and surrounding the entrance to the catacombs. On the other hand, glyphs bring negative consequences to the district, preventing the growth of any vegetation. The ground is mostly covered by dirt, ash, and dust. The nature of the glyphs is a mixture between divine and arcane magic, transcribed in Draconic language.[37]
- Raven's Crest: Gothic cathedral in the district center[38] dedicated to the worship of the Raven Queen.
- The Cobalt Vault:[39] The archive of the Cobalt Soul in Vasselheim is a center for archive within the city[40] and one of Exandria's leading libraries, ranking with that in Rexxentrum on the continent of Wildemount. The High Curator of Vasselheim shares dual and equal leadership over the entire structure of the Cobalt Soul with the High Curator of Rexxentrum.[41] The people of the library in the Duskmeadow, dedicated to Ioun, are also in a loose partnership with the worshipers of the Raven Queen.[40]
- The Amaranthine Oubliette: The prison of Vasselheim.[42]
- Catacombs: An underground structure in which the dead of Vasselheim are interred.[42]
- The Velvet Cabaret: Place of leisure for wealthy guests.
Society[edit | edit source]
Since the Founding, the people of Vasselheim have endured through many wars and conflicts. They generally seem rugged and stern, wearing patchwork furs and unkempt hair, moving through life with a mind set that "they can fight against this", and calling it a privilege to be able to survive in such harsh environment as a sign of their devotion to their respective deities.[7]
Following the Calamity, as the oldest preserved civilization and the place of earliest temples in the world, Vasselheim became known as Exandrian spiritual center and the host to abundant archive collection, keeping dense records every century since the inception of the city.[43][44]
Due to Vasselheim's notable arcane past and the devastating consequences of the the Calamity sparked by an arcane ambitions—the use of arcane magic within the city limits is supervised and requires an approval from the state. Mages are often distrusted and the expansion, as well as the unchecked use of the arcane is condemned and illegal. Public displays of semi-powerful, non-divine magic draw attention and, if insufficiently justified, may result in small fines or minor jail time for disturbing the peace. If the offense is large enough, brief jail time may occur to investigate the caster.[45][46]
In addition to the core deities worshiped in Vasselheim, the other Prime Deities have minority followings, such as the Dawnfather, the Changebringer, and the Everlight.[47]
Government[edit | edit source]
Vasselheim is led by a council of the highest ranked members of each temple.[48] In The Legend of Vox Machina, these leaders are called the Dawn Marshals.[49] In Critical Role, Dawn Fist warriors Groon and Quethir Droh are the only leaders so far directly stated to be Dawn Marshals,[50][51] though Bertrand Bell broadly referred to multiple Dawn Marshals.[52] Chetney Pock O'Pea, who has never been to Issylra,[53] remarked on multiple Dawn Marshals as "like the people that run the place".[54]
As of 812 PD, at the end of Campaign 1, members of this council include:
- Vord of the Platinum Sanctuary[48]
- Groon of the Crucible[48]
- Ophera of the Birthheart[48]
- Curtis Uleas of the Crown of Erathis[48]
- The Trust of Winters of Raven's Crest is leaderless. Many of their order attend meetings,[48] and it appears that a pair of maidens who talk in unison speak on behalf of the temple.[55]
Pike Trickfoot attended one of these meetings, apparently as a representative the Temple of Renewal. It is not clear if she is a member of this council, however, as she was standing "at the edge of the council, trying to listen in".[56] By 843 PD, Quethir Droh was also a Dawn Marshal,[57] alongside Groon;[58] it is not stated what both of them being Dawn Marshals simultaneously means for representation of the Dawn Fist at this council.
Meetings of the heads of the city are attended not only by the members of the council but also by other representatives and notable members of each temple and its district,[48][59] such as Lieve'tel Toluse and Bertrand Bell.[60][61]
Defense[edit | edit source]
About a quarter of Vasselheim population are volunteer to be the Bastions, the militia unit that works in makeshifts, maintaining order and patrolling the bounds of the city during peace[62] and serving as the main military force if the city were to be attacked.
Defense strategy included disallowing any permanent teleportation circles within the city.[63] A circle was finally allowed to connect the Cobalt Vault to other Cobalt Soul archives throughout Exandria; it was created shortly before 836 PD (during which Campaign 2 is set).[64]
Economy[edit | edit source]
Vasselheim proudly exports variety of enchanted potions, and Mertin Cyndrial claims that most of them, one could see throughout the world in some way, shape, or form, originated in Vasselheim.[65]
Culture[edit | edit source]
People of Vasselheim have the celebratory feasts throughout the year to honor one or more of the Prime Deities, prepared and served meticulously ritualized and formal. By eating the meals, the people indirectly renew their vow of remembering the hubris that nearly destroyed them and the gods who saved them.[47]
On 22nd of Quen'pillar, people of the Quadroads come together to feast and exchange gifts, celebrating the Civilization's Dawn, the day of the Lawbearer. The Slayer's Take brings luscious cuts of meat from their hunts and hosts celebratory bonfires that cook these meats with vegetables into a stew, handed around to all who wishes to join.[66]

History[edit | edit source]

Campaign 1 events before Vecna's attack |
Vasselheim survived every catastrophe in Exandrian history and is the only city to have successfully endured both the The Schism and The Calamity.[69][43] It is said that the earliest human, elvish, and dwarven civilizations stemmed from this city,[44] which is believed to be "tens of thousands of years old".[70]
During The Schism,[71] Bahamut shed a tear for the sacrifices his devoted followers made during the war. This created a crystal, the Star of Exaltation, which was preserved in the Platinum Sanctuary.[72]
During the Age of Arcanum, an archmage of Vasselheim named Vespin Chloras attempted the Ritual of Seeding to ascend to godhood, hoping to kill and replace Asmodeus rather than destroying a Prime Deity as The Raven Queen did.[73][74] This was among a series of events that released the Betrayer Gods into the Material Plane.[75] The Betrayer Gods attacked Vasselheim shortly after,[76] destroying a significant amount of the city. With aid from the Prime Deities, including Erathis and Bahamut,[68] the city survived the initial attack. After a battle between the gods and their followers that lasted for twenty days, the Betrayer Gods were ultimately forced to retreat. This, however, mobilized Exandria and the Prime Deities to war against the Betrayer Gods and their followers.[77][78]
After centuries of war, the Betrayer Gods were banished, but Vasselheim was all that remained of civilization.[79] The records of the Scalebearers state that it was at Vasselheim that Bahamut and Erathis announced that the Prime Deities were to leave the Material Plane and create the Divine Gate for the preservation of Exandria. This marked the end of the Age of Arcanum and the beginning of the Post-Divergence.[80]
Nearly three hundred years before Campaign 1, the city came under "a terrible siege". The Star of Exaltation was used as a focus in a ritual to invoke Bahamut's intervention and defend Vasselheim. This act expended the last of the crystal's energy and, having served its purpose, was destroyed on the Material Plane by the will of Bahamut.[72]
Campaign 1: Vox Machina[edit | edit source]
When Vecna ascended to godhood, he made Vasselheim his primary target. His "miracle" to prove his divinity and recruit more worshipers would be to destroy the spiritual center of the Prime Deities and literally place his own city (Thar Amphala) on top of the rubble. The council of Vasselheim sent word across Exandria, requesting aid. J'mon Sa Ord eagerly offered aid from Ank'Harel (bringing all the Hands of Ord to Vasselheim),[16] and Republic of Tal'Dorei pledged their support as well. However, King Bertrand Dwendal refused to mobilize against Vecna until the threat was confirmed to have reached Wildemount and the borders of the Dwendalian Empire.
Vecna had reanimated a deceased earth titan and placed Thar Amphala atop it. While Vox Machina stealthily made their way up through the Crypts of Thomara (inside the titan), the allied forces fought against Vecna's forces. An arcane barrier guarded Thar Amphala from exterior assault, so Vox Machina's mission to banish Vecna with the Tome of Isolation became imperative.
As Vox Machina battled the Whispered One atop the ruined Tower of Entropis, the earth titan had reached the outskirts of Vasselheim and had begun smashing the Braving Grounds district. Acolytes of Vasselheim summoned devas to battle against the Remnants and forces of undead.[81] When Vecna was banished beyond the Divine Gate, the earth titan ceased to be reanimated. It fell to its knees and remained motionless where it had been standing: at the base of the Heaven's Stair.
With the defeat of Vecna, the city rejoiced and Vox Machina were hailed as the saviors of Vasselheim.[82]
Before Campaign 3[edit | edit source]
Members of the Grim Verity stole forbidden documents that revealed the existence of Predathos, who had been sealed in Ruidus, as well as the two gods it had eaten, Ethedok and Vordo. Some were captured by guards in Vasselheim, while others escaped but were pursued by Judicators.[83]
Hearthdell, a town in rural Issylra, after many years of declining missionary efforts from Vasselheim, experienced clergy of the Dawnfather building a temple and establishing a foothold of worship.[84]
Campaign 3: Bells Hells[edit | edit source]
While searching for Ebenold Kai in Yios, Bells Hells encountered a Judicator from Vasselheim at the Aydinlan Seminary.[85] Not long after, they found Ebenold and learned of the Grim Verity's actions and why they were being hunted by the Judicators.[83]
Skyships from Vasselheim were present at the Tishtan excavation site to try to fight against the Ruby Vanguard, but they were unsuccessful in their efforts,[86] and Bells Hells found trophies of the masks of dead Judicators at the site.[87] Following the onset of the apogee solstice, forces from Vasselheim mustered at the site around the Bloody Bridge to Ruidus.[88] They also had a presence in Bassuras.[89]
Team Issylra, after arriving in Hearthdell, killed the missionaries of the Dawnfather and destroyed the temple in exchange for assistance getting back to their compatriots.[90] They considered going to Vasselheim before instead seeking help from Hevestro, a druid.[91] Following Bells Hells' reunion in Jrusar, FRIDA, Deanna, and Prism decided to travel to Vasselheim to research the solstice and gather allies.[92]
After the Western Encampment was attacked, the forces of the Exandrian Accord fell back to Vasselheim, and when Bells Hells learned this, Imogen messaged Keyleth.[93] Essek teleported Bells Hells to the city gates, where they gained entry. Upon walking through the city they learned of the Dark Bloom, an uprising of undead caused by the apogee solstice.[94] They reached the Platinum Sanctuary, where a number of world leaders were in council.[95]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
Matthew Mercer first developed Vasselheim during a four-hour plane flight.[96] He noted that Vasselheim has "somewhat Norse" influences,[97] and the Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting sourcebook more specifically says Issylra's cities are inspired by 12th-century Norway, centered around religious sites and relics reminiscent of ancient Mesopotamian and Sumerian temples.[98]
