Anchored links[edit source]

Hey y'all who are maintaining this article! I've just created a template I think you'd find useful: {{anchor}}. It'll let people create wiki links to certain points of the page, or inside tables like this one, as if they were header links, which would allow for much more precise linking across the wiki. You can find more information at the link, but it basically works as:

Code Displayed Example link
{{anchor|~805 PD|about 805}} ~805 PD #about 805 PD
{{anchor|826}} PD 826 PD #826
{{anchor|22 Fessuran 835|text='''22 Fessuran'''}} 22 Fessuran #22 Fessuran 835
{{anchor|20 Duscar 810|Winter's Crest 810|text=20 Duscar}} 20 Duscar #Winter's Crest 810

The most important thing is that each name inside the template must be unique, so no "8 Misuthar" twice, which is easily remedied by including the year. The biggest consideration I see is whether or not to include PD inside the anchor names, which I leave up to your more knowledgeable discretion. Note that there can only be 10 total anchor names. I'm enthusiastic about the idea, but the limit of 10 anchors makes it hard to do what I'd like to do, because there are so many notable dates. Is there any prospect of being able to get around that restriction in the foreseeable future? –Durandal's Fate (talk) 18:53, 16 July 2021 (UTC)
Oh, that'd be REAL easy! I limited it to 10 because it was the limit in the template I adapted it from, and I didn't personally see the need past that. But, I can absolutely add in a whole bunch more as needed. Just to make sure: it's 10 names per template, but you can use the template itself as many times as you'd like on the page, so there could be 50 of these templates with 10 names each in theory, so long as every single one of those names is unique. (It's probably a good idea to pick one style instead of covering all possible variations of date formatting.) But, I can absolutely add in the ability to put more names in, now or in the future. Just name a number. FreckledMcCree (talk) 19:08, 16 July 2021 (UTC)
So we can put, say, 200 anchors on the page, as long as they all have unique names, but any single anchor can only have 10 names. In the "20 Duscar 810|Winter's Crest 810" example, both "20 Duscar 810" and "Winter's Crest 810" would point to the same anchor, and that's two out of ten possible names. In that case, 10 should be more than enough. This is great! –Durandal's Fate (talk) 19:23, 16 July 2021 (UTC)
Yep! Just so. The only problem I can think of might be, eventually, there will too many templates on the page to display this page properly. Because there is a limit of how big a page can be. I don't know what it is, but I know it exists. At that point, it might be a sign to split the page into subpages. But, that's a later problem. (Hopefully.)
