Tabaxi, also called catfolk, are a race of cat-like humanoids in Exandria.

Description[edit | edit source]

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Tabaxi have feline heads, resembling big cats of various shape and color[5] such as panthers and jaguars. Their bodies are covered in fur and posses cat-like hands and feet with retractable claws, as well as tails. Tabaxi from cold environments typically have thicker fur. Tabaxi are typically taller than humans, standing between 5 and 6 ½ feet tall. Most are relatively slender for their size, averaging around 145 pounds.[3]

Powers and abilities[edit | edit source]

A tabaxi's claws can be used as natural weapons, and also allow them to be deft climbers. They're extremely agile, capable of incredible bursts of speed. Their feline eyes also give them the ability to see in the dark.

History[edit | edit source]

"Generally, catfolk believe that their kind were all once normal animals, transformed by magic" either during the peak of the Age of Arcanum or in chaos of the Calamity.[5] The other creation myth suggests that they have been born from the dreams of Melora within the jungles of Exandria.[6]

Society[edit | edit source]

Catfolk "usually live solitary lives, claiming small territories to call their own, though some catfolk live as small family units with little conflict." However, tabaxi's affinity for solitude doesn't interjected with their social skill. Many catfolk are "highly social around others, safe in the knowledge that they can retreat to a solitude promising safety and calm whenever they need to".[5] They also live an entrepreneurial existence, thanks to their skill in hunting, crafts, and social guile. Others live adventurous lives, their curiosity driving their movements across the lands.[3]

Tabaxi can be found in small numbers across all of Wildemount, where they are generally well thought of. One clans of tabaxi live along the Menagerie Coast, alongside the native Ki'Nau people. Others, such as the Nightback Clan, live in the the Savalirwood of the Greying Wildlands.[6]

In Tal'Dorei, clans of tabaxi live in the jungles of the Rifenmist Peninsula, where they have been known as "cunning trackers and community builders" and frequently skirmishing with the elven Orroyen Tribes.[7] They dwell of the Cliffkeep Mountains in the caves divided into their own private flats.[5]
