Sprinkle is a crimson weasel and the pet of Jester Lavorre. He was later revealed to be a vessel of The Traveler.[2] As an NPC, Sprinkle is played by Matthew Mercer. As a PC in "A Familiar Problem: Sprinkle's Incredible Journey" (OSx48), Sprinkle is played by Travis Willingham.

Description[edit | edit source]

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Sprinkle is a small, red-furred weasel.[3]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Sprinkle is, in his travels, often subjected to difficult conditions and can as a result be irritable.[4][5] He is also intelligent enough to learn tricks.[6]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Background[edit | edit source]

Prior to Jester's ownership, Sprinkle was owned by travelling pet salesman Kestiff Drudy.[7]

Notable Appearances[edit | edit source]

"Beyond the Boundaries" (2x32) The Mighty Nein passed a pet salesman on the road between Zadash and Nicodranas. Beau and Jester split the cost of a blink puppy they named Nugget. Jester bought Sprinkle on her own.[8]

"The Second Seal" (2x47) During down time as the Balleater traveled from the Gravid Archipelago to Nicodranas, Jester taught Sprinkle to fetch small items for her.[9]

"Domestic Respite" (2x62) Jester decided to make a weasel nest for Sprinkle in the tree on top of their tower and then forced him into it against his will. He was last seen, clearly very unhappy, hissing at her.[10]

"A Fog Lifted" (2x106) Sprinkle somehow survived the boiling waters of Vokodo's lair, but it put him in a very bad mood. When Caleb put octopus-Frumpkin on Jester's shoulder, Sprinkle immediately attacked him and Frumpkin poofed out of existence.[11]

"Hell or High Water" (2x136) It was revealed that Sprinkle is actually a vessel of The Traveler that he inhabited occasionally in order to keep an eye on Jester.[12]

"A Familiar Problem: Sprinkle's Incredible Journey" (OSx48)[edit | edit source]

Shortly after he was purchased, Sprinkle, after hoping briefly that he would live a peaceful life in the Lavish Chateau, became separated from Jester and the rest of the Mighty Nein.[13] He was quickly joined by Nugget as well, and the two of them came across CLAPP, Toby, and Joanne in the trash in an alley near the Chateau.[14] The group decided to go to the Open Quay to seek freedom, and Toby summoned a horse and stole a cart, which the party rode towards the outskirts of town. [15] There they saw Kestiff Drudy and his assistants, searching for some lost mice. The familiars took this opportunity to free most of the other animals from Drudy's cart from their cages,[16] and then fought off Drudy and his assistant, fleeing into the jungle with the tiger cubs.[17] They set up camp and were met by Froga Yaga, who told them their fortunes and who warned them about the dangerous Professor Thaddeus.[18] Sprinkle ate the mushrooms she provided them, and Artagan spoke through him briefly, telling the rest of the familiars to reunite Sprinkle with Jester at the docks.[19] They returned to the docks via the beach, only to find the Mighty Nein engaged in combat with the crew of The Mist. The familiars became embroiled in the chaos of the fight and in Professor Thaddeus's machinations,[20] but Sprinkle ultimately made it onto the deck of the ship with most of the others, and was reunited with Jester.[21]

In the one-shot, Sprinkle is described as somewhat frazzled-looking and wild-eyed, with bandages, some missing fur, and a tattered kerchief around his neck.[22]

Relationships[edit | edit source]

Jester Lavorre[edit | edit source]

Jester is Sprinkle's owner. He rides on her shoulders, hiding in her hood and armor in dangerous circumstances. Despite her best efforts, Jester's adventuring life is very difficult for Sprinkle and he is frequently skittish or upset.[23] He is not very trusting of Jester, as he was unwilling to go into the small hut she had made him in the Xhorhaus.[24] As time went on, Jester tried to make things more comfortable for Sprinkle, despite the rigors of travel and combat,[25] and Sprinkle returned to her despite the affections of Oremid Hass.[26]

Yasha Nydoorin[edit | edit source]

After returning to the Xhorhaus from their encounter with Isharnai, Yasha gave Sprinkle a bath. He hated this experience.[27]

Caduceus Clay[edit | edit source]

Sprinkle enjoyed the sandwich offered to him by Caduceus after the ordeal of the bath that Yasha had given him.[28]

Oremid Hass[edit | edit source]

Oremid Hass famously loves small animals and was very affectionate towards Sprinkle. He also gave Jester some advice on how to care for Sprinkle.[29]

Appearances and mentions[edit | edit source]

Quotations[edit | edit source]

  • Beau: "She has a ferret named Sprinkle that has survived against all fucking odds, Dairon. I'm just saying maybe mix it up or something . . . maybe."
  • Laura: "I knock on the door and say-" (as Jester) "It's a weasel!"[32]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Sprinkle was always intended to be Artagan in disguise, as a way of keeping tabs on Jester. If the party had not bought Sprinkle, they would have found him an hour later, having stowed himself away.[33]
  • Sprinkle's inspired by one of Jester's favorite foods: doughnuts, which are sprinkled with sweets.[34]
  • There is a running joke among the community that states Sprinkle is traumatized because Laura frequently forgets that Sprinkle is in Jester's shirt. This has led Jester to take Sprinkle along for many extremely dangerous encounters.
    • CritRoleStats has calculated that Sprinkle has survived 9 circumstances under which he would normally have died as of episode 56 of campaign 2.[35]
    • It is a further running joke among the players that Sprinkle has actually already died and is some form of undead.
    • Many of the cast like to voice Sprinkle's internal thoughts, especially Travis, and have joked about Sprinkle begging for help and crying about Jester neglecting him.[36]
  • When Hannah Friederichs was painting Sprinkle for "The Mighty Nein Reunion: Echoes of the Solstice" (OSx54), she asked the show's producer, Kyle Shire, if Sprinkle was still alive. They both agreed that Sprinkle is not dead until Laura Bailey, one and only, says otherwise.[37]
