Replenishment
|
The Replenishment refers to the act of Avalir returning to its terrestrial sister-city, Cathmoíra, and by extension, the continent of Domunas.[1] It occurs once every seven years, after Avalir has flown around the globe,[2] and lasts a month.[3]
This event is called the Replenishment because Avalir replenishes the continent with its magical energy. The process is highly technical, involving arcane batteries, and is overseen in part by the Architect Arcane.[4] It is part of a Pact of Crown and Throne that the mages of Avalir made with the druids of Gau Drashari, obliging the city to give 25% of the raw magic it collects during the seven-year-long journey to the druids, and the remaining 75% to the continent of Domunas,[5][6] which results in increased crop growth, "magical children", fey activity, and significant works of magic.[7]
The Replenishment is also an opportunity for extensive celebration, and there are many associated festivities, including the Parade of Beasts.[8][9]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
Although the tithe of ether for the Drashari people was set at 25% and the other 75% was supposed to be put into the ground for the Replenishment, that hadn't been happening for the last two or three Replenishments (for 14-21 years prior to the Calamity). Just less than 5% of the city's ether was actually going to go into the ground of Domunus for the last Replenishment, and the rest was redistributed to the Astral Leywright or funneled out to archmages in the city to unnaturally extend their lives.[6]
