Dr. Rajan Savarimuthu is a professor of archaeology and a member of the Circle of Tide & Bone. He is played by Noshir Dalal.

Description[edit | edit source]

Rajan is nearly six feet tall and dresses very finely in a velvet coat and cravat,[3] and nearly always wears gloves. He has dark hair and scarring on one side of his face, and runic tattoos on the other.[4] He wears a sharp ring that he can use to slash open his clothing, revealing that he has a hive of locusts built into his body.[5]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Rajan is described as "brash" but socially charming.[6] However, he is deeply affected by the death of his sister and feels immense guilt over it.[7] He still harbors feelings for Dr. Elsie Roberts, his former romantic partner.[8]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Before Candela Obscura[edit | edit source]

When Raj was young, after his mother's death, a nun named Rahema came to comfort the family. She was The Great Maw in disguise, and enthralled his sister Aadtika, and while Rajan was able to bind her he misspoke and failed to save Aadtika.[9] His mother had been acquainted with The Serious Man in some way.[10]

He was previously in a romantic relationship with Elsie,[8] and had worked with Cosmo Grimm in unspecified Candela Obscura business.[11]

Candela Obscura: Chapter 3[edit | edit source]

Rajan came to the meeting at The Antiquarian to join the Circle of Tide & Bone, having been contacted by Lightkeeper Nokari due to his familiarity with the suspected monster.[12] He immediately became affected by the sense of Bleed coming from Silva Sarkis and appeared unwell, but refused to leave the conversation.[13] When asked by Cosmo about his opinion, he recalled his childhood encounter, and then surreptitiously smeared scarlet on the back of Silva's hand to help calm him down.[14] Elsie pulled him aside and asked him if he was okay, but he politely brushed her off.[15]

At Grayslate Sanatorium, Rajan went with Oscar Grimm, whom he did not like, to investigate the grounds while the rest of the group created a distraction and investigated inside.[16] They found a deep hole from which Rajan detected significant bleed, and when he cautioned against going into it until the rest of the circle were present, Oscar asked for more information. Rajan related his failure to save Aadtika.[17] He waited there while Oscar went to get the others, but when he heard Elsie scream as she transformed into her beast form, ran over. He suggested that the circle come back at another time, but Cosmo and Oscar convinced the circle to go into the hole.[18] He continued to be affected when they descended into the Oldfairen ruins, but was able to correctly recite the binding chant this time, immobilizing The Great Maw, whom Elsie destroyed.[19] He then tore open his clothing revealing the hive within him and unleashed the locusts on The Serious Man, but told them to leave him alive at Oscar and Cosmo's requests.[20] After the rest of the circle had begun to leave, he mercy-killed The Great Maw's thrall who was still throwing themself at the stone walls of Oldfaire.[21]

One of Rajan's eyes, following the damage he had taken in the fight against The Great Maw, began to become an insect's compound eye.[22] Rajan was mostly quiet during the interrogation of Toren Gevni, though he did ask Nokari about Candela's knowledge of immortals following Oscar and Cosmo's story of how Oscar had become undying.[23] During the circle's investigation of the drowning deaths in Groundswell, Rajan watched for threats from the rooftops. After Madam Glask had deescalated the situation with Mina and Arterax, he offered to help bring in water to the people of Groundswell from clean sources in Briar Green.[24] He also spoke with Elsie following the mission, pointing out that Candela Obscura's attitude of containment and neutralization towards magickal phenomena might extend to them as well.[25]

Raj's suspicions proved correct, and he was not long after contacted magickally by Nokari, warning him that Candela Obscura were after the circle as they were and were harboring phenomena. He woke Cosmo and Elsie, and Elsie drove them to the Glass Cat.[26] When Elsie saw the casino on fire, she transformed into the Beast, flipping the car and injuring those inside it, but Raj used his swarm to shield Cosmo and split the damage of the attacks.[27] After Oscar revived them, the circle continued to Groundswell, where Rajan and Elsie used a minor explosion to distract the crowd to allow them to go down the well.[28]

Once in Oldfaire, Rajan used his swarm to detect where they should go to get answers on the fate of his mother and sister, and sensed a presence to the west. Some of his swarm landed on Elsie, due to her absorption of the Great Maw. He used the syringe from Toren Gevni to pre-emptively soak further Bleed, and after remarking to Oscar that he looked forward to working with him, led the circle westward.[29] When he met with Iomene in the Anatithenai, upon learning Aadtika was alive but trapped, he gave his life so that she could be free and live.[2] Elsie, some time after Rajan's death, saw a woman who looked very much like him in the city and realized what Rajan had asked of Iomene.[30]
