You know what? You were saying, "Don't run from yourself," but right now, I think I'm running to myself.

— Prism, remarking on her future[4]

Prism Grimpoppy is a shadar-kai wizard. She is played by Emily Axford.

Description[edit | edit source]

Official art of Prism with Mother and Dynios, by Hannah Friederichs.[art 2]

Prism is a shadar-kai elf with pointed teeth and ears, pale skin, and dark hair. She is dressed in goth style with emo runic tattoos and dark-colored clothing and in the style of a mage's apprentice; she wears a beret, blazer, shoes "probably only meant to climb a library bookcase ladder", and silk stockings that were quickly torn after her arrival in the wilderness. She has the symbol of the Cobalt Soul as a chain brooch on her blazer and as stocking clips.[5]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Prism is upbeat and excitable. She is eager to perform her work for the Cobalt Soul, an organization she thinks very highly of, to the point that she suspected that she would have tried to interview dangerous plants for her research if there were not others to have stopped her.[6] She is incredibly dedicated to studying and loves books and magecraft. She is very eager for opportunities to use her magic.[7] Additionally, she was upset to learn that sorcerers can spontaneously develop ability to cast magic without needing to study.[8]

She was surprised to find that she was excited to be outside of the library and said that she found the other members of Team Issylra more interesting than other mages. Despite being thrilled, she was also scared of the hostile environment and creatures and was "[vomiting] on the inside".[9]

She is possibly unaware of how other people live, as she assumed that a half-elvish individual can trance instead of sleeping as she does.[10]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Before Campaign 3[edit | edit source]

Prism is originally from the city of Obleris in the Shadowfell[11] and, when she was young, was invited by a mage from Cobalt Soul to join them. Prism wrote a goodbye letter to her mother and left the the Shadow Realm, which she described as "the gloom and misery", and traveled to the Material Plane of Exandria, seeking to achieve something more than offered by her home realm.[12] She became an apprentice scribe at the Cobalt Soul and studied magic as a member of their order of mages. However, after ten years of study by 843 PD, she was still an apprentice and was continued to perform menial tasks such as cleaning quills and emptying chamber pots.[13][14] Prism said she holds the record for the longest apprenticeship without advancement.[15] Prism has stolen four magic spell scrolls from the restricted section of the library.[16]

On the Apogee Solstice in 843 PD, the Cobalt Soul informed her that she was going to be teleported somewhere in Exandria, though they did not know where, and tasked her with conducting research about people's experiences during the solstice. She was put under the supervision of Dynios, a mage trapped inside a spellbook, before she was suddenly teleported away.[17]

Campaign 3: Bells Hells[edit | edit source]

Prism, with Dynios and her raven familiar Mother, were teleported into the Demithore Valley of Issylra. There, she met other lost individuals who were also teleported into the valley: Bor'Dor Dog'Son, Deni$e Bembachula, and half of Bells Hells, Ashton Greymoore, Laudna, and Orym. She openly approached them, introduced herself, and attempted to survey them about their experiences. Bells Hells informed her broadly about the attempt by Ludinus Da'leth (whom Prism knew of) to release Predathos to kill the gods.[18]

The group was shortly attacked. Prism, who had never fought in combat before, excitedly cast Greater Invisibility on herself and repeatedly attempted to tell a joke about how she was excelling in a field test.[19] Laudna complimented her on her combat performance, but Prism and Dynios argued about who the compliment was truly meant for. While on watch with Bor'Dor, she shared with him that she was excited to be outside the archive but was as scared as he openly was because she was only supposed to collect data, not fight. The pair additionally discussed their uncertainties about their feelings on the gods and about Mother and Bor'Dor's mother, and she offered to help clean him up with Prestidigitation if he panicked in combat again.[20]

Prism further showed her skills in combat when the party fought the Dawnfather missionaries in Hearthdell. While Prism was aware that many of her companions were unhappy with how things had happened, she felt proud of her competence and excited to be out in the world. She also was able to decipher many of the documents found in the Sunrise Sanctuary, revealing expansionist plans from Othanzia being carried out through the churches.[21] Abaddina, in gratitude, gave her a scroll of Scrying for her to copy down.[22] Prism's knowledge continued to be on display when she was able to Identify a githzerai skeleton at a crash site within the Serratus Wilderness.[23]

After Bor'Dor revealed himself to be an agent of the Ruby Vanguard, his Vitriolic Sphere knocked Prism unconscious.[24] After she was healed, she punched an unconscious Bor'Dor out of her sense of betrayal.[25] She then spoke with Laudna, who was feeling similarly betrayed, and the two discussed their feelings.[26] Prism joined Ashton, Laudna, and Orym in returning to Jrusar after admitting to Ashton she didn't want to return to the Cobalt Soul.[27] After Bells Hells reunited at the Spire by Fire Inn, Prism left with FRIDA and Deanna with the intent to do further research.[28] Before her departure, Prism promised FCG to protect FRIDA and ask to FCG to protect Orym in return, confiding that Orym became her new best friend.[29]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Before Emily Axford created Prism Grimpoppy, she had multiple character concepts. Emily planned to play a paladin of the Betrayer God Vesh[78] or a necromancer, a class which she wanted to play for a long time, but it didn't work for the narrative. She also thought about a woman character who got teleported in the middle of her wedding ceremony, and Emily would have worn a wedding dress, but she decided against this idea because it was tonally different from the party's storyline.[79] Emily also offered other guests players, during their first character meeting, to play triplets, but only two of them were identical.[80] She narrowed her character concept's scope to a character who is great at history, arcana, and religion to share known pieces of information or gather further knowledge for the party. She reduced the list to two characters one of whom was a "long-suffering PhD student".[79]

Emily initially saw Prism as Arthur Dent from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, shunned away from her home and planning to go home as her single goal. She was also going to role-play Prism to be "kind of prissy" about camping life of an adventurer, but then remembered that she was playing an elf with ability to fall into a trance and abandoned that idea.[81]

Emily wanted Prism to have a complicated past with religion, choosing the inhospitable of Shadow Realm as her homeworld[82] and the Matron of Ravens as her goddess, after Matthew Mercer sent her a clip of Vax'ildan talking to the Matron of Ravens.[83] She liked the idea of the Shadow Realm's inhabitants to be devout in their suffering and acceptance of death in the name of their goddess, when the Matron of Ravens herself is precluded from it. Additionally, Emily came up with a little storyline of Prism in her young age, where Prism had a dream where she found all the clues to the Matron of Raven's ascension and reproduced it on a great scale, making everyone immortal, and seizing the existence of the Shadow Realm, which Prism saw like a place of "penance". When Prism entered the Cobalt Soul, she "wised up" and realized that it was just a "youthful fantasy".[82]

  • (smiling big at the party) "How's this for a field test for my magic?"[19]
  • "I mean, it's the story of a wizard, right? My magic is all effort."[84]
