Marionette ghost

Marionette ghosts are phantasmal undead able control physical objects.

Description[edit | edit source]

Appearance[edit | edit source]

The marionette ghosts created by The Timberblight appear as spectral green vines that emerge from the ground. The vines attach themselves to objects in order to manipulate them.[1] Multiple marionette vines can act in tandem to manipulate a larger object in more complicated ways.[2] These vines are attached to a single ghostly plant,

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

  • Damage Immunity: Immune to non-magical bludgeoning piercing and slashing damage.[1]
  • Object puppetry: The marionette puppeteers an object, which determines the actions that it can take. The object can be targeted and damaged separately from the marionette.[1]

Puppeted objects[edit | edit source]

  • Snowmen: Humanoid figures made of snow. [1]
    • Vulnerable to fire damage.[1]
    • Makes two slam attacks dealing cold damage.[1]
  • Dragon skeleton: The skeleton of the white dragon Rimefang. [2]
    • Makes three attacks, one toothless bite, one clawless slam, and one tail swipe.[2]
    • Lair actions:
      • Spectral vines appear from the walls, attempting to restrain anyone within reach.[2]
      • The dragon skeleton makes a ghostly wail, frightening creatures that can hear it.[2]
      • A pulse of necrotic energy fills the lair. Creatures in the area make a Constitution save to take half damage and avoid being knocked prone.[2]

History[edit | edit source]

The Re-Slayer's Take[edit | edit source]

After escaping from an avalanche, The Re-Slayer's Take were attacked by a group of four marionettes controlling snowmen. Farah Vallari recognized them for what they were, and Timpani Guff told the others to attack the vines controlling them from the back. Most were destroyed by fire magic used by Idrin Shadowstep and Heera Agneheart, but one captured Poogs and spirited him away through a spectral barrier. After acquiring the Weapons of the Spectral Hand from Gurt Stumpstuck, the party gave chase through the barrier.[1]

They arrived at the abandoned lair of Rimefang in the Zenwick Mountains, where eight marionettes animated the skeleton of the white dragon. After a hard fought battle, the party defeated the animated skeleton and discovered the ghostly plant that was the source of these marionettes. Heera stabbed it with her rapier, destroying it.[2]
