Marion Collodi is a member of the Circle of Needle & Thread. He is played by Luis Carazo.

Description[edit | edit source]

Marion has dark hair and dark beard and stands about 5'9" with a medium-slim build. He takes care of his appearance, maintains his hair and beard, and makes an effort to look nice. He is described as having an intense look in his eyes but focused on something that cannot be seen.[1]

He has a Bleed-based starburst-shaped scar on his chest with small, tendril-like blue veins. The scar subtly pulses in a blue swirl. It expanded after sustaining a Bleed scar in "Eye for an Eye" (CO2x01), and blue veins began to spread up his neck to become somewhat visible above his collar.[2]

He wears an olive shirt patterned with small flowers and "typical" working class trousers. He also wears a vest that is "nice for a working class man" and is a hand-me-down from his father.[1]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Marion is described by Luis Carazo as a good kid with a good heart and as someone who held onto that as an adult "due to what was taken from him as a child". Marion sees the world in "a very pure and almost simple-minded way".[3] Beatrix Monroe often calls him a "sweet boy".[4]

He fears losing those important to him, and he joined Candela Obscura "so he could do something about one of the things he fears most".[3]

His favorite flower is a burgundy starry night petunia.[5]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Before Candela Obscura[edit | edit source]

Marion grew up with Sean Finnerty and his two brothers. Sean described Marion as always "playing tag-along", and Marion said that it only took one of the Finnertys to do something to convince him to do it as well.[6] Marion also knew Beatrix Monroe as an adolescent.[7] When Marion was 7, he sleepwalked into his parents garden and woke to find that a creature was trying to pull his soul out; this incident left him with a Bleed-based scar (described in § Description) on his chest. He tried to keep it hidden from his father, who eventually found it and became afraid. A year after Marion received the scar, his father contacted Jinnah "Jean" Basar's father, whom he heard about through others in the neighborhood, to have a ritual exorcism performed on Marion.[8]

Marion was a soldier during the Last Great War, which began in 1898 and ended six years later. He served alongside Sean in Echo Company. During a difficult retreat, Marion discovered that he had precognitive abilities when he had visions of Sean's death and used it to guide Sean through the trenches safely.[9] There was a period during the war where he did not see Sean for over a year because Sean was serving in the Ghost Platoon of NoMAD;[10] Marion, at the time, had been demoted to guard duty and was present when Jimmy Finnerty was executed. He later recounted to Auntie Bee that he had hoped to capture Jimmy's soul and be a vessel for it.[11] He and Sean also served under Lieutenant Nathaniel Trapp,[12] likely though not necessarily in Echo Company.

At some point he became an investigator for Candela Obscura, and he, Sean, Nathaniel, Beatrix, and Jean formed the Circle of Needle & Thread with Draven Kingsley as their Lightkeeper at some point in the months before "Eye for an Eye" (CO2x01).[13][14] He insisted that the circle's chapter house install a half-circle stained glass window depicting a starry night petunia.[5]

He lived alone in Newfaire by Summer 1907.[1]

Candela Obscura: Chapter 2[edit | edit source]

On Summer 13, 1907,[15] the Circle of Needle & Thread was sent aboard a train to prevent the Exoteric Order of New Sciences (EONS) from having a magickal device, later identified as a vial containing an immature androphage. Marion's visions saved Sean from an injury as Sean exchanged gunfire with an EONS scientist carrying the vial. Hearing gunfire from where Jean and Beatrix were, he split off to help them. En route, he found Nathaniel struggling against EONS guards and quickly moved to subdue them. In the process, he was injured by an EONS phase knife, which he took for himself. With Jean and Beatrix arriving at the scene on their own, Marion urgently followed Nathaniel's suggestion to regroup with Sean. He successfully reconnected the train to the earlier-detached engine car.[16]

The circle was immediately sent on a second assignment to investigate the murder of Allison Suarez's husband the previous night. Marion shared Nathaniel's concerns over information withheld by Candela and questioned the purpose of their previous assignment. He found a large mirror to defend against creature and, informed by a vision, pulled Beatrix out of a reverie as she gazed into a shattered one. As they descended into the subway in search of the creature, Sean observed that Marion was quick that day to use his visions to protect others and questioned if Marion ever did not want to prevent a premonition. He additionally asked if Marion could tell if Sean was not okay but brushed it off when Marion asked in return if Sean would tell him if he wasn't. Marion had a vision of a creature moving through the tunnels, and the group followed it to a sealed-off maintenance tunnel where a Candela lighthouse fell during excavation and stopped functioning. He helped distract a pack of squid dogs by sprinkling blood over kibble Beatrix had, buying time to climb into the lighthouse. At the top, they encountered a creature climbing through a rift to the Flare, and the Bleed exposure incapacitated Marion. The creature, unable to pull the soul out of Marion, remarked: "Ah, a vessel already prepared." Jean sealed the rift before the creature could take him, saving Marion's life. Marion woke sobbing and repeated, "There's nothing wrong with me!" Sean soothed him. The encounter caused the scar on his chest to expand.[16]

Not long after, Marion stayed with Jean on her couch so that she could look into his scar. As he rested, he dreamed of Jean's father coming to his home when he was young to look at the scar on his chest and perform an exorcism.[8] He and Jean, along with the rest of the Circle of Needle and Thread, were then summoned to the chapter house to investigate the death of Joshua Fisher, another member of Allison's circle, at the hands of the same creature. During the briefing, the creature, in the guise of Draven Kingsley, attacked Nathaniel, but Marion was able to pull it back, and with Sean's help the creature was driven out. It escaped out the window, and Marion was able to see that it fled on the rooftops. After Nathaniel was conscious Marion tied up the real Draven, who was nearly dead from bleed, and realized that Jean's use of adjuvant would only give Draven another hour or so. He and Nathaniel looked through the archives, which had been raided, and Marion was able to find a bleed ward among what was left. With Draven's information in hand, the group left the chapter house after Nathaniel lit it on fire and headed to the chapter house of Allison's circle, the Circle of Silver Flame, in Silverslip. They found it also raided, with the entry to the Fourth Pharos corrupted and the rift open and swarming with creatures. As Nathaniel and Sean fought off the creatures, Marion took in the rift. He saw the thread he recognized as having been pulled out of him when he was young call to him from the rift, and remembered a finger scraping along it. He asked it where it wanted to take him, and sealed the rift, prevented by Sean and Nathaniel from falling in. The bleed he received from this ritual caused his scar to expand even further. Jean arrived, having taken Lucas Suarez to the Trapp residence, and immediately began tending to Marion. As she did so, Marion called over Sean and told him not to yell at Bee, having overheard an argument between the two earlier. Marion, Sean, and Jean all discussed the importance of staying here, together, and Marion encouraged Sean to stay with Candela, despite his and Bee's earlier misgivings. He then, at Sean and Jean's urging, stayed at the chapter house to rest, with Jean still tending to him and Nathaniel keeping watch, as Bee and Sean went out to find the final two members of the Circle of Silver Flame. As Jean put balm on his scar, Marion showed her the memory of his soul being pulled through a thinning in the garden, and then a memory a year later of her father coming to perform the exorcism. Jean had been present, and originally closed her eyes, but Marion told her to watch the ritual this time. The thread of light moved from Marion's chest through Jean's before leaving them both. Upon exiting the memory, Marion told Jean there was nothing wrong with her, and she told him that "time isn't running out for [him]."[17] When Sean was attacked by the creature, who was disguised as Duncan Walters, Marion received a premonition.[18]

Marion and Jean took a carriage to The Steel to go after Sean, during which Marion attempted to sense other people with similar abilities within the city, and was able to do so. Once he realized the carriage had stopped, he joined Jean in investigating the Walters residence and found Duncan and his family turned into monstrous creatures, whom he and Jean killed. They then found Duncan's map of Westwreck including directions to an entrance to the Fourth Pharos. Bee and Nathaniel, and later Sean, rejoined Marion and Jean. The circle found a number of hoverbikes to ride to Westwreck, but were interrupted by EONS coming to collect payment and escaped the city with EONS in pursuit. After Jean was injured by Violet Boucher setting off a landmine, Marion tended to her in the cenote near the Fourth Pharos's entrance, and told her not to blame herself for Violet's death.[19]

Marion became stuck in the passage to the Fourth Pharos and was rescued by Bee. He was then patched up by Jean, and he kissed her. The circle then continued into the Fourth Pharos's vaults. When the Mother began to come through the rift, Marion recognized her as the entity who had initially taken his soul and who had continued to pull on it. Using his abilities, he instead took his soul from his childhood self and put it into his present-day adult self, rendering him unfit as a vessel for her. When he realized Sean had died, and that Jean was about to die from closing the rift, he gave her his soul so she could live on with part of him instead.[19]

Weird abilities[edit | edit source]

Marion is known to have taken the following abilities. He has taken these abilities from the Weird role:

  • Ritual: He may take a Bleed mark to perform a ritual on himself or an ally. Marion most often uses the ritual that regains him a resistance. This requires a few minutes to perform.[26]

He additionally has taken abilities available to him through the Medium specialty:

  • Premonition: When an ally is about to take at least one Mark, Marion can spend an Intuition resistance to warn them and soak the mark.[27]

Because the circle has the Interdisciplinary ability, each member may choose one ability outside of their role or specialty in character advancement. Marion has an ability from the Explorer specialty:

  • Not Again: Once per assignment, Marion may take a scar to automatically succeed on an action. The scar is described if he has had it the entire time. Action ratings are not adjusted when this scar is taken.[28]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Marion is loosely inspired by The Adventures of Pinnochio, one of Luis Carazo's favorite stories. Luis described Pinocchio as trying to become a real boy "because he feels he would be discarded if he remains as he is" and was interested in exploring a parallel story and what happens well after learning that lesson.[33] Marion shares a surname with Carlo Collodi, the pen name of Pinocchio's author Carlo Lorenzini; relatedly, "Marion" is similar to "marionette", the type of puppet that Pinnochio is.

Appearances and mentions[edit | edit source]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Critical Role Productions posted themed cocktails for the Circle of Needle & Thread. Marion's Garden Refresher is vodka (or a non-alcoholic substitute), St-Germain (or elderflower syrup), crème de violette (or violet syrup), lime juice, white cranberry juice, and floral tea garnished with a starry sky petunia. It is described to be "as sweet as its namesake", and the recipe instructs to always make two.[34]
