Leonard "Leo" Amicus[2] is a member of the Circle of the Crimson Mirror. He is played by Taliesin Jaffe.

Description[edit | edit source]

Leo is at least in his 40s, and dresses very well, frequently wearing a long robe.[3]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Leo is friendly and socially adept.[4] He enjoys fine wines and liquor,[5] but also believes strongly in family[6] and in writing down one's experiences for future edification.[7]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Before Candela Obscura[edit | edit source]

Leo is familiar with Malcolm Trills' family and specifically with his brother.[8] Twenty-three years before the events of "The Gilded Graveyard" (CO4x02), Leo performed a ritual, as part of the Dawn Society, with a clock in the small, unused church in Sacred Ascension Cemetery. It summoned a phenomena that killed everyone involved but him, including his sister.[9] He was institutionalized following the event.[10]

Leo is estranged from his parents as a result, but is on good terms with his aunt and niece.[11]

Candela Obscura: Chapter 4[edit | edit source]

During the storm, Leo assisted Edgar in surgery, primarily by distracting and soothing any upset crew members.[6] The following morning, after expressing some reluctance to go to the Isle of Serenity but accepting the mission,[12] he advised Malcolm not to place the lives of strangers over the lives of the circle.[8] That evening, he accepted the invitation of a crew member and slept with him.[13]

On the Isle of Serenity Leo in particular found the behaviors of some of the residents strange and suspicious.[14] During the fight with the Murphy's, he took all the remaining kitchen knives and, with Grimoria, chased after Pegeen.[15] He and Grimoria also were the ones to initially catch Decklan Murphy after he ran.[16]

Upon returning to Newfaire from the Fourth Pharos, where the circle had stayed for a week, Leo immediately poured everyone some of the wine Zora had brought them.[17] Not much later, after the others had left, he received a note from Grimoria requesting a meeting.[18] He then had dinner alone followed by some time in The Endless Well, the cafe downstairs from his apartment, during which he learned himself of the upcoming masquerade at Hayden House from Felix.[19] The circle reconvened at his flat the following morning and decided to inform Zora that Atia Griffia's remains may have been split up between two sales. He provided some encouragement to Grimoria,[20] and wrote a letter to Edgar offering his apartment as a place to vent or unwind.[21]

To obtain masquerade tickets, Leo then went to his aunt Leanna, who encouraged him to speak with his father, though Leo declined. The two then had a friendly conversation about Leo's romantic interest in Felix.[11] He and Felix attended the masquerade, along with the rest of the circle. There, he encountered his niece, who told him is father was present.[22] Leo informed Grimoria of this, and after the circle discussed how they might get into the secret auction, Leo left to go speak to his father. The two had a tense conversation in which Leo's father revealed he had six months to live.[23] While his father was unaware of the auction, Leo was able to get the circle access to the remains by using his family name of "Steedwell" and threatening the assistant to Aroha Tama-Kai.[24]

After Griffia's remains were stolen by members of Pyre, Leo realized with horror they were taking the bones to the small church in Sacred Ascension Cemetery where the Dawn Society had performed their ritual, and upon reaching the church, he began to hear the ticking of a clock.[9] During the fight, he was unable to return the skull to the chest,[25] but located the back room where he had performed the ritual so that the circle could open a portal to the Fourth Pharos through its door. He also attempted to destroy the clock, which was not visible to Malcolm, also in the room, and collapsed from his efforts before being taken into the Fourth Pharos, unconscious, by Malcolm.[26]

Leo was unresponsive for several days following his breakdown, and felt disoriented and "crumbling" upon coming back to himself, and could hear the clock much of the time.[27] When Edgar checked on his hand, the two shared their stories about losing their sisters, and both admitted how unfair their lack of closure was.[28] He told Grimoria she could stay with him rather than the Foggs for as long as she needed, and encouraged her to find alternate employment rather than return to them, comforting her when she admitted she wasn't sure what to do.[29]

Leo expressed some cynicism following Decklan's death,[30] but joined the others in their mission to rescue the Circle of the Wyrm.[31] He noticed his family's logo on some of the packs at the encampment on the 36th step of The Endless Descent, but did not investigate further due to the clock sounds.[32] Despite some initial trouble crossing the canyon on the way to the vault he was able to get through and was the one to notice the footsteps of the Circle of the Wyrm leading further into the vault, which he followed.[33]

Leo's back was injured in the fall into the abyss.[34] While affected by the fungus, he was able to center himself and locate Grimoria, and joined her.[35] In the process, he aggravated Malcolm's wounds, possibly killing him, but he and Grimoria survived and were able to return to Newfaire.[36] As he slept on his couch following their return, Grimoria read a letter he had left for her in the case of his death in which he willed her all his assets.[37]
