Jrusar (/ˌdʒruːˈsɑr/) is the capital city of the Oderan Wilds in northwestern Marquet.

Description[edit | edit source]

Jrusar is marked by five reddish rocky spires rising hundreds of feet above the jungle around and between them. It's theorized that the five spires were once one mountain that was destroyed by an unknown force during the Calamity.[1] Others believe that the spires are the remains of a stone titan, buried except for their fingers sticking above ground.[2]

The spires are connected, in part, by wire gondolas,[3] which are available for public use for a small fee (1 silver piece)[4] and which are controlled in part by stone automatons.[5] The only rigid bridge connecting any of the spires is the Fatewalk, a wide stone bridge hundreds of feet long that connects the Core Spire and the Lantern Spire.[6] The nobility of the city, the Mahaan houses, use small skyships called brumeskippers to traverse the spires.[7] Near the steps at the base of Jrusar live outcasts and people who wish to be free of the city's business structure.[8]

Aerie Spire[edit | edit source]

The Aerie Spire is the tallest of the five spires but is thinner than the Core Spire, and most of the construction on it is toward its top.[9]

  • Ascension's Rise University: A university.[10]
  • The Aerie Skyport for skyships.[11][12] It's located in close proximity to the conservatory[13] and was built to house four skyships at a time.[14]
  • The Parlor of the Collective[15] or Collective of Bodhan:[16] The administrative centre for architects, engineers, arcanists and other individuals maintaining the infrastructure of the city,[17][16] including Manaia Turei, an overseer of the "treescape".[18]
  • Starpoint Conservatory: One of the two famous universities in the city.[19]

Core Spire[edit | edit source]

The Core Spire is the largest, but not the tallest, of the spires.

  • The Chandei Chambers: The the well-guarded meeting place of the Chandei Quorum atop the Core Spire.[20]
  • The Dayal Hall: A private school serving people of all economic backgrounds.[21]
  • Fownsee Hollow: In the center of the Spire, hundreds of feet of climbable space with a network of ladders, walkways, cables, ropes, and rafters; numerous tunnels lead out from the unsupervised, ramshackle hovels to the streets. It is "where people go to disappear."[22]
  • The Mirror Towers: A guild district of four towers located near the top of the spire.[24] The Mirror Towers can be seen in the official art, at the top of the central Core Spire.
    • Moon Tower
  • The Windowed Wall (Viduun-Devaar):[25] A residential neighborhood on the outside of the Spire near the base, with hundreds of homes featuring porches that offer a view.[26] Home of Laudna, Imogen, and Dugger.
  • Eshteross Manor (formerly the Prudaj Estate): Home of the reclusive Lord Ariks Eshteross.
  • The Prism Emporium: A general store on the main road high on the Spire.[27] Owned and operated by Tuyen Otwana.[28]
  • The Spire by Fire Inn: A six-story tavern built into the rock on the edge of the Spire.[29]
  • Dreamscape Theater: An ostentatious theater owned by Stuvan Idrio.

Lantern Spire[edit | edit source]

Official art of the streets of Jrusar, by Clara.[art 2]

Those entering the city on foot do so through the Lantern Spire, which has a thriving market in travel and tourist goods.[30]

Lucent Spire[edit | edit source]

Official art of Jrusar, by Kent Davis.[art 3]

The Lucent Spire is the second tallest spire[40] and home to many wealthy denizens of Jrusar.[41] In the upper section of the spire sits a loft that houses a particularly upscale neighborhood.[42]

Smolder Spire[edit | edit source]

To the northwest of the Core Spire, the smallest spire serves as the industrial area of the city. It is full of factories belching colored smoke, and there is a lot of mining of metal, fuel,[48] and gems.[49] There are also some residential portions.[50]

  • Factories
  • The Granite Hold: A prison.[51]
  • Gurge Kisgregg's house
  • Neer-Matown: A quarry in the center of the spire.[52]
  • The Soot and Swill Tavern: A drinking establishment.[53]
  • The Take It or Leave It: Possibly a drinking establishment.[54]
  • Underrush Mines: Southernmost and deepest mine in the spire, owned by the family of the same name.[55][56]
    • Crownset Cavern: A cave system within the Underrush Mines.[57]
  • Temple of the Duskmaven, located on the top of the spire.[58]

Unknown[edit | edit source]

  • The Herald's Feast Tavern, an establishment of lower reputation in comparison to the Spire by Fire.[59]

Society[edit | edit source]

Demographics[edit | edit source]

Because Jrusar's skyship port, like Ank'Harel's, is considered "open" instead of the more closed-off ones elsewhere on the continent, Jrusar is a cultural mixing pot, borrowing rites from many traditions.[60]

People of many races commingle in Jrusar, to a greater degree than typically seen in Exandria: humans, dragonborn, dwarves, eisfuura, elves (including drow), gnomes, goblins, goliaths, halflings, katari, ogres, orcs, and pachydans, among others. The city is also home to half-elves, half-orcs, and uniya, people who are both half-orc and half-elf.

Nobility[edit | edit source]

There are several noble houses in the Oderan Wilds, known as the Mahaan houses, and many of them live in Jrusar, benefiting from their position. However, others are genuinely benign and try their best to improve the city.

Some of the noble houses are the following:

  • House Lumas: the house of the scholarly Lumas twins, killed in a mysterious attack[67]
  • House Treshi: oversees official construction[68] and has interests in at least three guilds[69]
  • House Maysoon: owner of the Mahaan Maysoon Trading Company and producer of maps[70]

Factions[edit | edit source]

  • Guro Coterie
  • The Chandei Quorum oversees and controls the larger populace of the region.[71]
    • The Wardens of Jrusar, colloquially known as "Wilders", are the guards and law enforcement of the city working for the Quorum. Some of them are simurgh riders,[72] called Sky Wardens.[73]
  • The Ivory Syndicate, a criminal organization which seems to operate unchecked in Jrusar and across the Honored Trails.[74]
  • The Hubatt Corsairs, an up-and-coming criminal organization that robs the corrupt rich and gives their takings to the poor. They are in frequent conflict with the Syndicate.[75]

History[edit | edit source]

Bells Hells reunited in Jrusar after having been split up by the apogee solstice. Team Wildemount arrived pre-dawn on the Smolder Spire, and stopped in at the Soot and Swill and spoke briefly to Pretty, learning about the town's celebrations of the solstice and the subsequent breaking down of a number of the gondolas[76] before taking a brumeskipper to the Core Spire. There, they went to the Spire by Fire inn to wait for the others.[77] Team Issylra arrived in a public park and took a cable car to the Core Spire and the Spire by Fire.[42] Both groups observed a heavy military presence and a large number of skyships, and it appeared Jrusar was being used as a site from which forces from Vasselheim, Tal'Dorei, and the Clovis Concord were staging operations on the Tishtan site.[78]

After Deanna, FRIDA, and Prism left to do research, Bells Hells discussed next steps. They decided to take at least a day of recovery before leaving for Zephrah. Ashton and FCG went back to Krook House, and Ashton asked Milo to make improvements on their hammer. Imogen and Laudna visited Zhudanna, and while out grocery shopping for her and clothes shopping for Laudna, came across a crystal sphere that Ludinus used to broadcast his speeches in a public place. It was destroyed by the Wardens, but Laudna kept some of the fragments. Chetney, Fearne, and Orym first visited Dayal Hall, where Ajit Dayal updated them on the political situation and informed them J'mon Sa Ord had met with the Chandei Quorum, who were also working with the Hubatt Corsairs. They then headed towards a temple to the Duskmaven, but Chetney was lured into a trap and attacked by a bounty hunter hired by Tuyen Otwana, in retribution for him intimidating her previously. Chetney escaped with Fearne's help, and the three of them continued to the temple, where, after speaking with a priestess and drinking the temple's waters, they had a vision of the lens at the Malleus Key screaming endlessly. The party then reconvened and discussed their findings, and spent a second day recovering and retrieving necessary items before teleporting to Zephrah.[79]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Sillgoats are used as draft animals in the city.[80]
  • Jrusar doesn't have conventional sewers, instead relying on downward-draining holes that empty directly at the base of each spire.[81]
