Josgren's Hollow is a town within the Vesper Timberland of Issylra, located in the swampland surrounding the Marrowglade Loch. At some point between 837 and 843 PD, the town has been plagued by the whispering mouther, which was defeated by the Re-Slayer's Take and the town's future mayor, Janet.

Description[edit | edit source]

Much of the town is built upon stilts raised above the swampy terrain. The streets of the town are composed of boardwalks.[1]

Points of interest[edit | edit source]

  • Comptroller's office: A large and lavishly decorated building, houses the office where the town's comptroller presides.[2]
  • Herb processing plant: A factory where various herbs, such as rootgrass, are processed for potion production.[1]
  • Jail: Built into a dugout hillock on the edge of town.[2]
  • An unfinished statue of The Re-Slayer's Take[3]

Society[edit | edit source]

Much of the industry of Josgren's Hollow comes from alchemical products. The town hosts an annual convention called "Potion Con".[1]

Notable people[edit | edit source]

  • Vaughn Josgren Jr.: Comptroller of Josgren's Hollow, descendant of its founders. Lost the position after the re-election that followed the Re-Slayer's Take's arrival into the town.
  • Janet: Goliath bard who helped the Re-Slayer's Take liberate the town from the whispering mouther who was then elected as the new Comptroller.
  • Delphine: Young child who lives with her father.

History[edit | edit source]

Background[edit | edit source]

Josgren's Hollow was founded by and named after the Josgren family, who have acted as its elected mayors many times in the town's history. Around seven years before The Re-Slayer's Take began, Comptroller Vaughn Josgren Jr. created Potion Con, an annual alchemist's convention. This tourism brought more money into the town, though much of it has been hoarded by Vaughn, leaving the town's infrastructure to decay.[2]

Some time between 837 and 843 PD,[fn 1] about a week before the beginning of The Re-Slayer's Take, the town was gearing up for Potion Con when the traveling bard Janet arrived, warning of a "ghost cloud" and that the convention should be cancelled. Comptroller Vaughn had the man arrested and thrown in the town's jail.[2] Shortly afterward, the town was beset by will-o'-whispers, blanketing the town in necrotic mold. Anyone who made loud noises were captured by the phantasms and spirited away, including several visitors attending Potion Con. A deaf tabaxi escaped and went to the Slayer's Take in Vasselheim for help, but was turned away. Timpani Guff heard their plight, and several days later had assembled a group of adventurers to fight the spirits.[1]

The Re-Slayer's Take[edit | edit source]

The Re-Slayer's Take arrived in Josgren's Hollow and began to investigate the silent town. The residents had placed cloth over the boardwalks to dampen the sound of footsteps, though everyone stayed inside whenever possible. Shortly after they arrived, the wereboar Igor appeared in town, calling out to them that Heldwell had told them to stop their investigations of returning spirits. His loud calls attracted the attention of the will-o'-whispers, which descended upon him and spirited him away before turning on the party.[1] The party defeated the undead spirits, and were rewarded for their deeds by the Comptroller Vaughn Josgren Jr.. He also gave them the go-ahead to break Janet out of jail, insisting that the reward given wasn't a bribe.[2] At the jail, Farah and Timpani caused a distraction while Heera Agneheart went inside and met Janet. After a conversation, she slipped him out of his chains using a Potion of Freedom of Movement, and scaled through the cell's skylight with Frog's help.[2]

Janet guided the Re-Slayer's Take into the lair of the whispering mouther, the creature that summoned the will-o'-whisper, and aided the party that ultimately managed to defeat the creature. The citizens met the group with applaus, but Comptroller Vaughn attempted to take credit for hiring the party and "forgiven" Janet, commuting his sentence. Heera gave a speech to the town encouraging them to seek better leadership. Vaughn protested, but was knocked out by Delphine's father, who nominated Janet for the upcoming mayoral election.[3]

A few days later, a group of adventurers, the chosen of the Spectral Hand, arrived in Josgren's Hollow as Potion Con was underway. Gavain expressed confusion to his squire Maurice that the town was supposed to have been under threat by spirits. Euphemia conjectured that it must be the other party who took their weapons from Gurt Stumpstuck. They met Janet, the newly elected comptroller, and asked if a group of four adventurers like them had passed through, which Janet denied. As they left town, they passed by an unfinished statue of The Re-Slayer's Take, which Gavain took notice of.[3]
