In his fourth year in school, John Bunder ended up in a detention class with four other students (Bryan, Andy, Claire, and Ally). Professor Furbin gave them an assignment to write an essay of at least a thousand words about who they were. Bunder challenged her, and she increased his detention for the next month, which didn't trouble him.[7] When professor left the class, the party wandered investigating the classroom. John said he detected "wussiness" from Bryan's wand, and Bryan relaliateed, detecting university, something John would never know. Meanwhile, Claire and Andy heard a faint, child-like voice screaming for help in the adjacent Furbin's office. John and Andy went to check the office, Andy dared John to enter first. When the key for the cage was retrieved, both Andy and John opened the cage together, sharing the burden of responsibility.[7]
When descending into Schmogwarts' basement, Bunder noticed the chessboard and wondered if they had to play chess to advance. Bunder cast Acid Splash on the pawn and took its place. As the game started, John cast Tidal Wave knocking out of the game a rook and a pawn. In the next round, the opposition moved a piece dealing 30 damage John with Nat20, knocking him unconscious. Shortly after, Bryan healed him back up and demanded weed for a month from him. Standing up, Bunder cast Fireball right at the king, burning him up. All of the pieces on the board knelt, and remove themselves from the board.[7]
