Howard Margrove is a professor of philosophy[1] at the Briar Bank College in Newfaire and a member of the Circle of the Vassal & the Veil. He is played by Robbie Daymond.

Description[edit | edit source]

Howard is in his early 50s. He dresses very neatly in a three-piece suit and top hat, and wears glasses and a mustache.[2] He has a master's degree in chemistry, and an unspecified Ph.D. His field is medical ethics.[3] Following the second assignment, Howard was scarred with a small hole in his skull, hidden behind his hat.[4] After the third assignment's scar, the hole opened up into a crack, reaching the top of his eyebrow.[5]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Howard is extremely fastidious and focused. He does not socialize much with the other faculty, even when encouraged,[6] and later indicates he doesn't care for socializing much at all.[7] He is somewhat judgemental, and is condescending towards Auggie,[8] but is fond of Arlo, a former student.[9] He was familiar enough with Arlo prior to the events of "The Cold Embrace" (CO1x01) to be aware of the details of her fiance, Eddie's, disappearance.[10] He is also comfortable with both violence against others, and self-surgery.[11][12] His "only vice" is his use of scarlet.[13]

Biography[edit | edit source]

About a year prior to the events of "The Cold Embrace" (CO1x01), Howard had an encounter with magick which led him to be recruited by Candela Obscura. He was reminded of the incident by a magickal cold, and Charlotte Eaves worried that a frozen woman was similar to his experiences. He described the entity he encountered as more interested in torment than murder and said that he tried to manage the entity by reasoning with it.[14] This entity was the ghost of his dean, whom he'd killed in an academic dispute and who haunted him.[15]

Candela Obscura Chapter 1[edit | edit source]

After his colleague Errol Dennings unsuccessfully attempted to invite him out for drinks with other professors, Howard received a summons from Candela Obscura.[6] He met the others, and the Circle of the Vassal & the Veil was formed.[16] Howard was fairly quiet during the initial portion of the investigation, but provided first aid to one of the workers at the Evanoch Foundry injured by the steam explosion.[17] He then led the way into the building, and was able to provide useful insight into the containers that were ultimately used to recapture the spirit.[18]

The Circle investigated an attack at the Getaway Grand Hotel on Onette Ferris, a government official, about a month after the events of "The Cold Embrace" (CO1x01). Howard noticed some strips of grayish flesh outside the hotel and touched one of them, which immediately began to burrow into his hand until it was cut away by Charlotte.[19] Later, while investigating the room in which the attack occurred, Howard used his brass knuckles to punch out Captain Teren Roakes of the Periphery.[20] His general knowledge of medicine was later useful, along with Arlo's knowledge of the supernatural, in determining that the injury on the hand of Aaron Ferris, Onette's husband, was the result of bleed.[21]

While trying to attack the creature after its attack on the Alizarin Gallery, Howard's attempt to punch it failed and he went catatonic from the experience of seeing it.[22] Auggie carried him to the entrance of the sewer, where he came to. Howard then proceeded to perform self-trepanation using some surgical tools he had on hand, indicating his scar in Brain.[23] Following the circle's defeat of the creature, Howard returned to his home, where he released a blue, misty entity from a small device on his desk and smoked some scarlet. He addressed this entity as "Dean" and told it that he hoped to find Arlo's fiance, who had disappeared into a portal several years prior. The blue mist went into the still open hole in his skull.[4]

When the circle reconvened a week later, Howard, who appeared somewhat disheveled,[24] joined them. While in the countryside trying to bring back Kara Belmon, Howard knocked out her uncle with a blackjack so he would not find out about the supernatural events, and carried him to the train station for his safety. He also verified Kara was still living despite her lack of a face.[25] Back in the city, upon reaching the ritual site in Oldfaire where Lycus had first unleashed the Collectors, Howard found himself the only conscious member of the party after Charlotte was knocked out and Arlo and Auggie's faces stolen. He was able to pull Arlo's face free with his bare hands, though at the cost of his own face.[26] It was returned to him after Arlo defeated the creature.[27] Following this encounter, Howard developed terrible headaches, until using magickal snuff to cause the hole in his skull to crack further.[28]

Notable items[edit | edit source]

Scholar features[edit | edit source]

Howard is known to have taken the following abilities. His Scholar role allows him to take the following:

  • Well-Read: When Howard spends Intuitive drive on a roll, he receives the drives back if he fails.[31]

His Professor specialty allows him to take the following:

  • Chemical Concoctions: Howard may create a chemical that produces a particular effect. In game, it was stated to take him a few hours of work in the laboratory.[32] Published sheets for the role finalized after the chapter state that it takes a few minutes and requires taking the laboratory equipment gear.[33]

Because the circle has the Interdisciplinary ability, each member may choose one ability outside of their role or specialty in character advancement. Howard has an ability from the Medium specialty:

  • Bending Spoons: Howard can make a Sense check to control an object nearby with his mind. He can flip a switch, move a small object, knock something over, put out a light, etc.[34]
