Part I[edit | edit source]

Grog assembles his confused friends (Vex, Vax, Scanlan, and Percy) around a Bunions & Flugons game table in Scanlan's Magnificent Mansion and describes the substance of the game. Scanlan does a special accent for his character.

The session begins in a nearly deserted tavern in the wee hours of the morning. Pike has too much to drink and vomits over everything and everyone, enraging the patrons that were in the splash zone. Eventually they run out of the alcohol and meal. The bartender Bobaline says that he has food items down in the cellar, when ale and pigs are in the back, requesting them to fetch the festivities by themselves (since his son, who usually responsible for this tasks, is away). The group separates: Grog, Vax, and Scanlan promise to bring ale, when Vex and Percy descent into a basement searching for a meal. In the basement, there are variety of salted meats, cheeses, and bread. Vex also finds three bottles of Sandkheg's Hide kept behind a lock on the bottle's top. Failing to pick the lock, she smashes the top and takes a sip, then giving the bottle to Percy who promptly becomes intoxicated and drops the bottle that shatters against the floor. On a shelf they find a leathery ledger. Meanwhile, the second group sneak through the back door into the tavern's pen. Within, they see a cask of ale, which Scanlan picks up using his Bigby's Hand, and gains 300xp for an arbitrary achievement, created on the spot by Bunion Master Grog. Bob glad to hear that they completed the task and gives the party 70% discount. During the resumed festivities, all five become woozy and lose consciousness (Vex guesses that Bobaline poisoned them and gains 150 xp).

The party and Trinket wakes up in a cavern lit by torches, at which point Grog pulls out a map and miniatures, he stole from a child, to help visualize the scene. Vax's miniature Grog intentionally places facing the wall. They investigate the chamber and find paired trapdoors, embedded in the ceiling, with complicated mechanisms. Scanlan leads the way down the hallway (which on the map reveals to be a shaft of a penis) and steps on a push plate that activates darts hidden in the walls, which hit him three time including a poisonous one striking him in the butt. Vax sucks out the poison and they continue on, quickly defeating a dwarf ghost on their way (during the fight, Grog allows Vax to make only one attack with hos dagger).

Vox Machina characters enter the next room, the shape of which on the map resembles woman breasts. Both adjacent rooms are round and have a circular working fountain in the middle. They are attacked by two hell hounds, Trinket and Vex finish each of the hounds, and Vex gets 50xp. Investigating the chambers, Grog and Vex find secret small alcoves, where Grog retrieves 20 platinum pieces and Vex notices a pile of poop. At the far end of the second circular chamber there is a door with carving of a tower. When entering the door the party safely falls into the nex chamber with a pentagonal stone structure in the middle and darkness all around them, but Grog determines that they still can see the structure. It has five doors, leading into the identical rooms with a chest, potted plant, carpet, table, and chair. Each doorway has a symbol above it and an inlaid gem attached above the handle. One door is open and its doorway has a star above it (other symbols are: square, circle, triangle, money symbol). When inspecting the room behind the open door, Scanlan poisons a meat stake. While Vex tries to figure out the logic behind this puzzle, Grog reveals himself to be a doppelganger and starts choking her. The party come to a rescue and kill the doppelganger.

Part II[edit | edit source]

When Vex places takes the door handle with the money symbol, the gem above the handle glows. Scanlan takes the door with a square symbol (representing the cube), Vax - triangle (shape with three points, like dagger, dagger, dagger), and Percy - circle (circular glasses). All of them enter the identical rooms (chest with a greater healing potion, carpet, potted plant, desk, chair, and a locked hatch in the ceiling), and some of them are attacked by animated objects: Percy faces a twig blight, Scanlan grappled by a mimic, Vax restrained by a rug of smothering. The last two creatures were especially troubling, but after a few rounds Scanlan and Vax dispatched them and the latches open up. Percy got 150xp for coming up with a pun. The party climbs up into another pentagonal chamber, separated by force fields (which deal force damage upon contact) into five sections. In the section above the star room lays an unconscious humanoid body. In the middle there is a tower (visualized as a wooden pepper mill), also veiled by a force field. With a sudden flash, four creatures appear in each chamber, except the section with a humanoid body (Percy - mind flayer, Vax - cambion, Vex - unicorn, Scanlan - tyrannosaurus rex).

Percival restrains the mind flayer with manners and hit it repeatedly with Dragon Slayer Longsword, successfully shrugging off the Mind Blast, and defeats it without much resistance. Vex attempts to argue with the unicorn and their confrontation peacefully, but the unicorn responds that they are a unicorn and there can only be one, and keeps attacking Vex. Vex uses Grasping Vine to restrain the unicorn and flies upward, still attempting to dissuade the creature from being hostile. Scanlan turns into a triceratops and brawled with the T-rex, but does not manage to hit it. Vax casts Faerie Fire around the cambion, and brings him to the brink, but in retaliation, albeit briefly, cambion successfully commands Vax to to grovel in front of him. On his next turn, Vax finishes off the cambion. Scanlan returns to his form and casts Reverse Gravity, sending the T-rex upward into the force field and eventually crushes it. The unicorn, now convinced by Vex's persistent arguments, saying that Vex'ahlia showed them great respect, her kindness will live throughout the ages, and all the unicorns will be told of her mercy. It kneels down, places the horn on the ground, and all of the enemies and force barriers disappear.

Percival investigates the humanoid body, appeared to be mauled by something. Meanwhile, Scanlan gives Trinket inspiration by feeding him a poisoned meat, which Trinket drops unconscious from the poison. Vex healed the bear and cast Speak with Animals, asking him what went wrong. Trinket brings his suspicions on Scanlan, but Scanlan effortlessly deceives Vex that the unicorn's magic is at fault. While the party continue to interrogate Scanlan, they are interrupted by an explosion at the top of the tower. Climbing the tower, the party encounters Grog. The tells them about the troubles he went through to reach the tower, resembling all the troubles the party underwent, and passed the room with a star (symbol of Dallas Cowboys). As they speak, a cloaked levitating female figure takes form and sings Holding Out for a Hero by Bonnie Tyler. Grog goes into the rages, transforms into a werewolf. Everyone rolls initiative.

Already wounded by his encounters before approaching the tower, Grog is brought to the brink in one round, and Percy finishes him using his Dragon Slayer sword. The woman is revealed to be Trish the Dish who acknowledges that the champion has fallen and teleports the party back to the tavern with the unconscious Grog's body. Bobaline drops dead in shock. Vax attempts to shave off a part of Grog's beard, but the "mystic werewolf powers" instantly regrow any shaven hair. Scanlan casts Wish to give Trisha persistent gonorrhea. Grog, the Bunion Master asks the players the morale of the story. They either think the Grog is great and the need him, or they need to kill him in the end. Percy wins at the end with 650xp, getting 500xp at the end for guessing Grog's favorite color, which is "six".

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

  • The idea for Grog to run a one-shot seemed to be invented on the spot in "Talks Machina #7: Thordak" (TM1x79), ten months earlier.[2]
  • Kristen Mack did the custom Game Master screen for this one-shot. Actually Arcade drew the portraits.[3]
  • The half-orc and tiefling couple with a baby that the party meets early in their adventure is an early reference to Fjord and Jester, and to Travis and Laura's then-unborn baby. Laura's pregnancy wasn't publicly announced until a few months later.
  • The party is at level 20.[4]
  • Liam brought eight tubes of miniatures for Travis.[5]

Quotations[edit | edit source]

  • Travis: (Takes long drink from flagon) Ahh! We're fucking doing this.
  • Grog: Hey, hey. Look, I know we've got a night to ourselves. I was wondering if maybe we could all like play a game I heard about...right, so I was in the tavern the other day, right? And I heard about this game, uh, I think it's called: 'Bunions and Flagons', right? And you all are going to play little, itty-bitty, versions of yourselves. And all you have to do is use your imaginations. I'm going to tell you a story and then, like, you contribute, tell me what you want to do, and I'll draw out little maps and we'll go on an adventure.
  • Grog: Pike gets up and she's like...(drunken slurring) you guys, I---I love being...your friends
(Laura, Liam, Sam, and Taliesin burst into laughter)
    Taliesin: Too real
Liam: Dimensional distortion there for a second
  • Grog: Make a perception check
    Vex: Okay...erm, a 31
Grog: You don't see anything, unfortunately. It's just unforuntate.
(Sam, Liam, and Taliesin roar with laughter. Laura is not amused)
Vex: Grog, Grog! 31 is higher than 15! 31's really high. It's high!
Grog: (Pause) Right, so you see, uh, her geneology going back like, uh, four generations. You see...
Vex: Do you even know what geneology is?
Grog: Yeah, it's like, you know, a blue denim.
  • Grog: In this game, if you notice something, call it out to each other. Because what one person sees, the other...some of you might not see. And just cause you know it at the table, doesn't mean you know it in your minds.
Vex: Wow, this game's so smart.
Vax: You made that, you just made that up.
Grog: No, that's how this goes, I promise.
Vax: Where did you learn this game?
Grog: I was in a tavern and this long-haired guy was just playing a game at a table and I thought it was fuckin' great. I watched for a while, like hours. I was hooked. I might go back next week and watch.
  • Vax: But, you said that there were no points, and you got points?
Grog: No, no, they're not points. They're XP.
Scanlan: What does that stand for Grog?
    Grog: Xylophone Players
    (Sam bursts into laughter)
Percy: 300 Xylophone Players. My God, you could retire on that. In fact, you can retire quite well on that.
  • Vex: Trinket what happened?!
Grog: (doing a Trinket impression) Well, I had the worst stomachache. Oh, I don't know...I ate that meatball from Scanlan and then I fuckin' died...
    (The cast laughs)
...I don't want to make any assumptions, but...
