Gray Assassins
The Gray Assassins is a term used by Hondir to describe dunamantic echoes of Otohan Thull, the only known individual who is able to summon echoes specifically through a contraption fueled with Potions of Possibility.
Description[edit | edit source]
The assassins are a magical, translucent, gray images of their creators with 1 hit point and immunity to all conditions.[1] When they die, their remains turn into a dark gray liquid.[2] Keyleth told Bells Hells that the assassins used a toxin that interferes with the use of divine magic.[3]
History[edit | edit source]
Before Campaign 3[edit | edit source]
In 837 PD, six years prior to Campaign 3, Otohan, along with her assassins clad in dark gray leather, attacked Zephrah. It was assumed to be an attack on Keyleth, Voice of the Tempest. In this fight, Orym's husband Will and his father-in-law Derrig were killed under the effect of the toxin that prevents resurrection.[4][3] After Keyleth dealt with the assassins, their remains disappeared, as if they had melted.[5] About six years later, shortly before "The Draw of Destiny" (3x01), Jarret Howarth heard from his old friend Oshad Breshio that assassins, matching a similar description, had murdered the Lumas twins, and passed along this intelligence to the Air Ashari via his employers, Percy and Vex'ahlia De Rolo.[6]
Campaign 3: Bells Hells[edit | edit source]
At the beginning of Campaign 3, Orym arrived in Jrusar, Marquet to investigate the case similar to the attack in Zephrah. Breshio, who had been gravely wounded trying to protect the twins, provided Orym with his account,[7] as did Roe Estani, a friend of theirs who had been present yet untouched in the attack.[8] While their accounts agreed with Orym's experience, they were unable to provide more information on these assassins. However, Estani later told Orym that the twins may have been targeted due to their connection with the Grim Verity, and gave him a letter for another member of the Grim Verity, Ebenold Kai.[9]
The name "Gray Assassins" was first stated by Hondir, also a member of the Grim Verity, in explaining why he had been in hiding. He told Bells Hells that half of the Grim Verity had been killed in the past decade.[10] Imogen meanwhile realized that her dreams of Otohan Thull fit Hondir and Orym's descriptions, as well as Birdie Calloway's description of "terrestrial folk" working with the Unseelie Court on a plot concerning Ruidus in the Feywild. She confirmed with Hondir and Birdie that Otohan was indeed a member of the Gray Assassins.[11] They also mentioned that another one of the leaders was an older elven man.[12]
Orym confirmed that the assassins who attacked Zephrah are identical to the echoes that Otohan creates with her backpack. It is unknown if Otohan is the sole source of these assassins, or if there are others.[13] Laudna was slayed in the fight with the Gray Assassins, but, after Keyleth inspected her dead body for the presence of the toxin that might prevent resurrection magic, she confirmed it was not present.[14]
While in Whitestone, the night after Laudna's resurrection, Imogen had another dream of the red storm, and in it saw the figure of a male warrior who reminded her of Eshteross. She tried to reach out to him within the dream, but he did not respond.[15] Later on the same day, Chetney found the dead body of Eshteross sprawled in his manor. Chetney managed to grasp a scent of Otohan on the corpse[16] and Orym recognized a faint smell of the toxin in his blood.[17]
