Fate-Touched

Fate-Touched are individuals in Exandria that influence the threads of fate near them.[1] Cree Deeproots and her mother have the ability to detect what they called "the glint" and that such people with the glint are "bristling with destiny". Cree compared this glint to how ravens collect shiny things, saying that the Matron of Ravens, goddess of fate, will take notice of the glint.[2]

Fate-Touched individuals[edit | edit source]

It is indicated that many individuals throughout history are Fate-Touched, but the only one confirmed to be by the Raven Queen is Vax'ildan.[1][3]

Cree Deeproots detected "the glint" on Lucien Tavelle when the pair met as children in Shadycreek Run.[2] Cree was told by her mother to stay close to those with the glint, and the two remained close friends. Notably, after Lucien and the Tombtakers reached the Genesis Ward of Aeor on their quest to release the Somnovem during Campaign 2, Cree told Lucien that she didn't see the glint on him anymore.[4]

Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting and Reborn[edit | edit source]

In the Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting, Fate-Touched is an available background, intended to be assigned by the DM rather than chosen by a player. According to this setting, fate-touched individuals rarely know of their abilities. Its feature, Fortune's Grace, grants a single Luck point, similar to those in the Lucky feat.[5]

In the Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting Reborn, Fate-Touched is a supernatural blessing, still intended to be assigned by the DM. It is suggested that there might be a connection, for some fate-touched, to Ruidus. The feature remains the same, though it does include the clarification that if the reroll applies to a roll made with advantage or disadvantage, both dice are re-rolled.[6]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Matt first introduced this feature during his D&D 4th edition campaign in 2013, where one of the players, Chloe Dykstra played a Fate-Touched halfling.[7] He then developed it for Liam's character in Campaign 1 due to some difficult events Liam was having in his personal life, and found it particularly fitting once Vax made a pact with the Matron of Ravens.[8] The Fortune's Grace feature of the Fate-Touched background in Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting was created as an in-joke reference to Liam occasionally forgetting how many times he's used the Luck feat in a day, using it four times instead of three.[9]
