The Empathy domain is the cleric subclass of Fresh Cut Grass.

Powers and abilities[edit | edit source]

Domain spells[edit | edit source]

  • 1st: Speak with Animals[1]
  • 3rd: Detect Thoughts[2]
  • 5th: Aura of Vitality[3]
  • 7th: Compulsion[4]
  • 9th: Telepathic Bond[5]

Transfer Suffering[edit | edit source]

Beginning at 1st level, as a reaction, the cleric can halve the damage dealt to a creature within 30 feet[6] and gain temporary hit points equal to their cleric level plus their Wisdom modifier.[7][8] If the cleric attacks a creature and hits, they deal additional damage equal to the temporary hit points, which then disappear.[9] If they have not lost the temporary hit points by the end of their next turn, either through successfully attacking another creature or through taking damage, they lose these hit points by default and take damage equal to the number of remaining hit points.[10]

Channel Divinity: Sympathetic Binding[edit | edit source]

Beginning at 2nd level, as an action, the cleric can use their Channel Divinity to magically bind themselves to a number of friendly trusted companions they can see within 30 feet equal to their proficiency bonus.[11][12][13] If the trusted companion is hostile toward the cleric, the trusted companion must make a Wisdom saving throw or be bound.[14] As a bonus action on each turn for 1 minute, the cleric can grant one of the following:

  • Ardent Armor: The cleric can give one bound creature 1 + Wisdom modifier temporary hit points.[15][16]
  • Bonded Blessing: The cleric can allow one bound trusted companion to add a d6 to an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw.[17]
  • Scatter Vigor: The cleric can choose itself or one bonded creature to take 3d8 necrotic damage and one other bonded close friend regains an equal amount of hit points plus double the cleric's wisdom modifier.[18][19]

Shared Exuberance[edit | edit source]

At 6th level, when an ally within 60 feet of the cleric rolls a natural 20, the cleric gains advantage on their next attack roll, ability check, or saving throw that they make within the next minute.[20][21]

Divine Strike[edit | edit source]

At 8th level, the cleric can infuse their attacks with divine energy. Once on each of the cleric's turns when they hit a creature with a weapon attack, the attack deals 1d8 additional damage.[22]

At 14th level, the damage increases to 2d8.

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Sam Riegel, upon developing the character of Fresh Cut Grass, asked Matt if he could play as a therapist, and this resulted in the development of the homebrewed Empathy Domain.[23] One of the influences for this came from "Titles and Tattoos" (2x84), when, in an aside, Taliesin Jaffe asked Matt if they could make a therapy character class.[24]
