Eaedalus Okiro is a human sorcerer. He is the older brother of Nydas Okiro and, at the time of Exandria Unlimited: Calamity, is alcald of Cathmoíra. He and his wife also care for Elias while his father Zerxus Ilerez serves as First Knight of Avalir. As an NPC, he is played by Brennan Lee Mulligan.
Description[edit | edit source]
Eaedalus is a large human man described as handsome and muscular with a big stomach and a bushy beard.[1] He seems to be more down-to-earth and less idealistic than his brother, as he did not share his brother's certainty in their youth that they would one day live in Avalir.[2]
Biography[edit | edit source]
Background[edit | edit source]
Eaedalus and his younger brother Nydas Okiro were pirates who aspired to live in the flying city of Avalir.[3] While Nydas became a pirate captain and then eventually moved to Avalir, Eaedalus returned to Cathmoíra, Avalir's sister city where he and Nydas lived as young boys.[4] By the events of Exandria Unlimited: Calamity, he was Cathmoíra's alcald, their mayor.[5] He lived in the city with his wife Irmé, son Romar, and daughter Ramira. Elias, the adoptive son of his brother's friend Zerxus Ilerez, lived with Eaedalus and his family since Zerxus became the First Knight, at least seven years ago.[6]
Exandria Unlimited: Calamity[edit | edit source]
As Avalir approached Cathmoíra on the eve of the Replenishing, Eaedalus sent Nydas a spell kite with a brief friendly letter and a gift of Irmé's nut and fruit loaf.[7] The family held a small celebration feast,[6] and Eaedalus was still awake at around two or three in the morning, writing a letter.[8]
When devils attacked Cathmoíra late in the night, Eaedalus's home served as a command center. Zerxus arrived at his home, wishing to speak to Elias. Eaedalus asked after Nydas and was told that Nydas was fine. He urged Zerxus to see to Elias inside.[1] As Zerxus left, Eaedalus ordered the guards in the city to evacuate the children to the skyships, and he and two knights physically dragged Elias away.[9] He then boarded the fleet's flagship and made his way to safety.[2]
Just before Avalir, Cathmoíra, and the continent of Domunas were destroyed, about an hour later, Eaedalus contacted Nydas using Sending to ask if Nydas also made it to safety. Nydas, dying, lied that he had and assured Eaedalus, "All will be well." Eaedalus connected to Nydas again using his sorcerous magic, and Nydas died remembering he and Eaedalus as boys on a ship dreaming about Avalir.[2]
Character information[edit | edit source]
Eaedalus is a sorcerer.[10] He can cast the 3rd-level spell Sending,[2] though it is not clear if this is through his own magical abilities or through an item.
Appearances and mentions[edit | edit source]
- Exandria Unlimited: Calamity
- "Excelsior" (E3x01), mentioned only
- "Blood and Shadow" (E3x03), via Scrying (first appearance)
- "Fire and Ruin" (E3x04)
Quotations[edit | edit source]
- Eaedalus: "You think we'll ever get there one day?"
Nydas: "Of course we will. We're the Okiros. Nothing's going to stop us."
Eaedalus: "Some things might. I don't know why I say you should get there, your head's already in the clouds."
Nydas: "Brother! It's important to dream!"[2]
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- His title "alcald" is near-identical to that of an alcalde, a traditional magistrate in Spain. "Alcalde" is derived from the Arabic for "al qāḍī", meaning "the judge".
- His name is similar to that of Daedalus, the father of Icarus who made the two of them wings to escape Crete. He warned Icarus not to fly too close to the sun or the wax holding the wings together will melt, but Icarus disregarded the warning. The memory of he and Nydas as boys loosely mirrors this: as they wonder about one day living in the flying city of Avalir, Eaedalus gently admonishes Nydas about his head being in the clouds, but Nydas dismisses it.
