Deni$e Bembachula (pronounced "Denise") is a mountain dwarf[4] barbarian/rogue. She is played by Aimee Carrero.

Description[edit | edit source]

Official art of Deni$e, by Hannah Friederichs.[art 2]

Deni$e is a stocky dwarven woman with many tattoos, notably one of a heart that reads "Me", and a cursive "D" on her neck. Her hair is blonde, her skin is light brown, and she has a Monroe piercing. She wears pants, a corset, boots with jewels on them, and a gold belt from which a sickle and a whip hang. She also wears earrings that read "Fuck off."[5]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Deni$e is somewhat suspicious initially and refused to give her real name to the party, introducing herself as "Mona" instead.[6] She is very annoyed about her ex, but admits to Orym she thinks of herself as a "hopeless romantic."[7] Deni$e is not particularly impressed by the gods,[8] nor by magic, but seems to respect combat prowess and compliments both Orym and Ashton on their skills.[9][10]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Before Campaign 3[edit | edit source]

Deni$e is a hair stylist.[11] She and Dariax Zaveon were in a romantic relationship and worked together on criminal jobs in Tal'Dorei. They were tasked with stealing furs, but when Deni$e went to visit Dariax to pick up the furs for their employers, he and the furs were gone. Her employers demanded they were owed money, so she went to find Dariax.[12] An episode of Narrative Telephone, which is not necessarily canon but tells the same events, places this in Westruun.[13]

She traveled throughout Tal'Dorei, ultimately tracking him to Emon. There, she contacted him using a one-way box provided by Shaun Gilmore. She finally spotted him across a room on the Apogee Solstice in 843 PD, but when she went to talk to him, she was teleported to Issylra.[12]

Campaign 3: Bells Hells[edit | edit source]

Laudna, Orym, and Ashton encountered Deni$e, who initially gave her name as Mona, as they climbed out of the Spectrum Gorge. After determining she had also been suddenly teleported, the group worked together to get up to the lip of the canyon.[14] They then traveled through the woods of the Demithore Valley for about an hour until they came upon a campfire, which they approached. The person who had made the fire, Bor'Dor Dog'Son, was startled and hit Deni$e with a Lightning Bolt, but after Orym calmed everyone down, healed her. Deni$e stole his slingshot.[15] Prism Grimpoppy arrived not long after, and soon after that, two shambling mounds and a corpse flower attacked the party. Deni$e proved very capable in the fight and got the killing blow on the corpse flower, after which she and Ashton bonded over their "Fuck off" accessories.[16] The party decided to rest for the night. Around the fire, the members of Bells Hells updated the others on the events of the apogee solstice, during which Deni$e remarked that she had no particular interest in the gods.[17]

Deni$e took the third watch of the night with Orym. Orym was surprised to learn her ex was Dariax, and told her that he knew Dariax. Deni$e then recognized Orym from wanted posters in Emon from the Nameless Ones.[18] She reassured Orym, who was feeling very insignificant and helpless, before waking up the rest of the party by throwing rocks at them.[19]

Deni$e joined in when the party fought the Dawnfather missionaries in Hearthdell, and unlike some of her companions, was mostly unbothered by the ramifications, though she was very insistent on staying with Abaddina until she had kept up her end of the bargain to Scry on Dariax.[20] The Scry revealed Dariax to be with Dorian Storm, looking worried but alive.[21] The party then traveled towards Irriam Canyon to be transported to their respective destinations. Deni$e became more suspicious of Bor'Dor given the inconclusive Scrying using his weapons as a focus, and eventually stole his slingshot.[22] She used this as a pretense to return it before twisting his arm behind his back and confronting him.[23] However, when he revealed the truth, that he was an agent of the Ruby Vanguard, she advocated restraining and questioning him rather than killing him.[24] Following his death, she buried him with his mother's dagger and his sketch of his family, and redistributed the rest of his items.[25] Prism Scryed on Dariax one more time, locating him in Westruun, and Deni$e was sent there by Hevestro at her request.[26]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Deni$e, a halfling bard at the time,[45] was created by Aimee Carrero who intended as a guest player in Campaign 2. She was approached sometime in 2019 and was waiting for an opening in the narrative; her constantly changing schedule also made securing an appearance difficult.[46][47] Weeks before her guest appearance, the COVID-19 pandemic struck, preventing her from playing in the campaign.[46][48][49] Aimee played Deni$e in the session zero held before Exandria Unlimited Prime, and Dungeon Master Aabria Iyengar immediately dubbed her "favorite", but Aimee felt more comfortable playing her other character, Opal, thus chosen for the subsequent miniseries.[45] Deni$e was also the storytelling character of Aimee's Narrative Telephone story,[13] where she developed Deni$e's relationship with Dariax Zaveon.[45]

Her surname, Bembachula, breaks down into "bemba" and "chula", and Aimee confirmed that the translation of "hot lips" as in some Latin American Spanish dialects is the intended one.[50]
