Decklan Murphy is an experienced investigator for Candela Obscura, and was formerly a member of the Circle of the Crimson Mirror. As an NPC, he is played by Liam O'Brien.

Description[edit | edit source]

Decklan is a middle-aged man and former history teacher in Newfaire. When the Circle of the Crimson Mirror found him after being asked to check on him, he had a spongy, mottled growth around one eye.[1]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Background[edit | edit source]

Decklan, a native of the Isle of Serenity, served as a mentor for the members of the Circle of the Crimson Mirror and was once the fifth member of the circle before being reassigned to mentor another circle of new investigators,[2] called the Circle of the Wyrm. He was also once in a circle with Zora Manning shortly before her retirement.[3]

Candela Obscura Chapter 4[edit | edit source]

Zora Manning, the Lightkeeper for the Circle of the Crimson Mirror, radioed the group as they were on a return voyage aboard the SS Dandridge to Newfaire following an assignment to rendezvous with the Red Hand. She asked if they could stop on the Isle of Serenity as a favor, as Decklan had returned for a visit and hadn't been heard from since, and he had been "in the weeds" in the few months prior.[4] The circle agreed, and arrived on Serenity about a day later, where they had some strange experiences with the locals but ultimately reached the Murphy cottage.[5] Decklan's sisters invited the group in for tea while they waited for him to return from a walk, but Decklan's mother, Margaret, seemed worried and agitated and said he had gone to the fairy houses.[6] The sisters suddenly attacked, killing Margaret and injuring Malcolm Trills and Edgar Lycoris.[7] After defeating Pegeen and Nora, the group went out to the fairy house near the cottage, where Grimoria could sense Decklan and where Gráinne, having run away during the fight, attacked them.[8] Malcolm shot Gráinne and the circle found Decklan, a strange growth on his eye, in the hut. He broke into a run but fell over Grimoria, and the circle realized he was a source of bleed and a phenomenon.[9] After anesthetizing him using Edgar's supplies, they smuggled him out to the ship to bring him to Newfaire.[10] He was later taken into isolation in the Fourth Pharos, and despite work performed on him by Edgar and by Dr. Hector Aguilar, he fell into a coma.[11] He died not long after; when Edgar and Dr. Aguilar inspected his body before it was placed in the Pharos's vault, it showed the white residue all along his respiratory tract, and was decaying more rapidly than would be typical.[12]
