Deanna Leimert[6] is a gnome cleric from Uthodurn. She is played by Aabria Iyengar.

Description[edit | edit source]

Deanna is a middle-aged gnome with dark brown skin and round cheeks. Aabria described her figure alternately as "like a Pixar mom" and as having a "dump truck ass."[7] She wears golden heavy plate armor with a symbol of the Dawnfather around her waist, and a pale pink knitted shawl around her shoulders. Her boots are described as looking like Ugg boots.[8]

Deanna bought herself a stretch green bodysuit in the Catlyn's Clothier.[9]

Portrait gallery[edit | edit source]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Deanna is friendly and prefers to keep things cheerful, remarking multiple times that the conversation with Bells Hells was getting very "heavy".[10] She however does hold a grudge against Chetney, years later, for breaking up with her.[11] She also has complicated feelings about being resurrected many years after her death.[12]

Deanna knits as a hobby, and made Chetney's hat.[13] Her form of worship of Pelor is providing for and helping others.[14]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Before Campaign 3[edit | edit source]

Deanna and Chetney Pock O'Pea had a brief fling hundreds of years before 843 PD, while both were on vacation in a beach town in the Menagerie Coast.[15][16] The relationship ended sooner than Deanna wanted.[17] She later moved to Uthodurn, Chetney's hometown, and met her gnome husband Dustel Leimert afterward and had children with him.[18] During a festival in the mid-600s, she was attacked by a creature and killed. Her husband became an adventurer and, two hundred years later in 839 PD,[19] found a cleric of Pelor to resurrect her.[1]

Deanna earns a living by knitting and trading her self-made goods.[20] Some time between 841 and 843 PD, she met and became close friends with the aeormaton FRIDA, bonding over their shared experiences of being brought back into the world after being dead (or in a similar state) for centuries. In mid 843 PD, Deanna went with FRIDA on an expedition to Aeor in Eiselcross. They encountered many dangers and Kryn soldiers, and decided to return before they got themselves killed.[21]

Dustel Leimert is a retired adventurer and, in 843 PD, is around Chetney's age. While he was an adventurer, during times when he nearly died, Deanna's spirit would push him back into life.[22]

Campaign 3: Bells Hells[edit | edit source]

On their way back from Eiselcross, FRIDA and Deanna encountered Chetney, FCG, Fearne, and Imogen in a cave in the Flotket Alps, fighting a frost salamander. They decided to travel together back towards Uthodurn, though Deanna's first action post-combat was to slap Chetney.[11] She told the party about her past, and about how her resurrection many years after her death shaped her beliefs regarding the gods.[12] After a day of travel, she and Chetney reconnected, and she admitted that her feelings had gone on beyond the initial fling; meanwhile, Chetney told her about his time in Uthodurn after their relationship ended.[23] He began to tell her about his lycanthropy but she interrupted him with a hug before he could; he then immediately was overtaken with the urge to shift into his werewolf form and ran off.[24] The rest of the Bells Hells members present told her about Chetney's condition.[25]

After Chetney attacked FRIDA, Deanna was extremely angry,[26] and stayed up all night until Chetney returned.[27] By the time he came back, she had calmed down and he apologized for not telling her about his lycanthropy and running away. She asked him if he remembered the fight, and he said it was vague, more like a dream-state. She healed him up and listened as he explained that FCG also has a tendency to freak out and attack the party, and the two disagree on whether this makes them a safe group to travel with.[28]

The party continued on into Uthodurn, arriving just past sundown. Deanna noted that many of the things they saw there were out of the ordinary and that the citizens seemed on edge. At the Vellum Steeple, Deanna demanded to speak with a manager and had a tense conversation with Scribewarden Ressia Uvesic about the strange happenings caused by this Apogee Solstice, until FCG advised everyone to calm down and try a different approach. Deanna then apologized, and asked about the safety of the people in the city, to which Ressia said they were fine, but she worried that several enchantments had broken, including magical imprisonments.[29]

The party then heard a deep rumbling from further down in the city, and Deanna Blessed the party before hurrying off to investigate the Grand Disc. There they found that a Great Beast of Veluthil had gotten free of its petrification and was running rampant in that district of the city.[30] The party talked their way in, and began helping citizens evacuate, with Deanna summoning a Guardian of Faith to protect them until they could ensure the beast was of no longer a threat.[31]

They found the Great Beast, Umudara, and upon realizing that it was merely lost, confused and scared, magically communicated with it to tell it they meant no harm and were going to get it out of the city, with Deanna feeding it some of her rations. They escorted Umudara out of the city, with Deanna riding on his back and casting Aura of Life on him. They parted ways with the Great Beast on the outskirts of the city, giving him directions towards the ruined Savalirwood.[32]

Following their meeting with the Diarchy of Uthodurn, FRIDA asked Deanna how she was doing and told her they had a crush on FCG, which she supported.[33] She then went to the Light Above Sanctum to meet with Evodon Leeds, and urged him to reopen the temple to devotees of the Dawnfather after reassuring him that the gods' distance was not due to sins, but to external events.[34] The following morning, she left with the rest of the party to head to Molaesmyr. On the way, she asked FCG about his intentions with FRIDA, and he reassured her. They also asked her for advice on following a god, and she admitted she finds worship more through doing things for others than through traditional prayer.[35] Later along the journey, FRIDA also asks her for advice on prayer. They also discuss whether FRIDA wants to be a werewolf, as Deanna believes she can cure them if they're interested.[36] Deanna also slaughtered one of their flot goats on the journey when Team Wildemount realized they could not travel by boat with the goats, which upset Imogen.[37]

In Molaesmyr, Deanna's fluency in Elvish came in useful when she was able to decipher Ludinus's notes,[38] as did her ability to turn away the many undead in the city.[39] After the fight with the hatemonger and their escape into the Savalirwood, Deanna cast Detect Magic and investigated the papers further, and read them aloud so FRIDA could record them.[40] She became upset when FRIDA asked Imogen and FCG to read their thoughts, out of fear she might lose them.[41] Chetney went to comfort her, and after an emotional conversation the two of them began roleplaying before running further into the woods to have sex. Deanna invited Fearne to join them, which Fearne did.[42]

The following morning, immediately after FCG received a warning about Predathos from the Changebringer, Deanna received a very urgent and commanding warning from the Dawnfather about Predathos as well. She and FRIDA joined the others in going to Jrusar.[43] While in Jrusar, she cast Commune with the Dawnfather, and asked him whether Bells Hells were likely to succeed in saving the gods; whether his disciples were doing harm; and whether he was worth saving. He was unsure the party would be successful and told her his disciples were working for the greater good, but became angry and ended the spell without any further response at the final question.[44] Deanna, FRIDA, and Prism all left Bells Hells together to do research, and as she left, Deanna covered up her holy symbols with yarn.[45]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

The idea for Deanna came from the concept of the "fridged wife" in tragic male backstories. Aabria Iyengar specifically shouted out "Women in Refrigerators", a website by Gail Simone that coined the phrase.[73] Deanna's caretaker relationship with FRIDA came from NPC idea Aabria had while GMing in the world of Exandria.[74] Aabria has a playlist for Deanna, where one of the songs (Best Friend by Saweetie) is dedicated to FRIDA.[75]

Illustrator Hannah Friederichs said that Deanna's character portrait came together quickly in a way that amazed her. Her husband attributed this to Aabria creating "a minimum of five characters a week, so you can't be that surprised".[76] Aabria sent "so many" images of Elastigirl as references for the portrait.[77] Hannah added that Deanna's character art was primarily influenced by the animation in contrast to the realistic human proportions and features, including "her big eyes, her button nose, and her heavily defined curls", which motivated Hannah to hyper-render the clothing elements to bring realism into the mix.[78]

After some details in Chetney Pock O'Pea's hat made it technically impossible to knit, Friederichs aimed to avoid this problem with the shawl featured in Deanna's portrait.[79] Both the front and back of the stockinette stitch are illustrated where they would be visible. She pointed out that the front side of the stitch faces outward on both ends, which is incorrect even for a Möbius loop and requires either a seam or a second twist. She prefers to think there is a second twist, even though one is not reflected in the shape. She said if she was doing the portrait again, she would turn the stitches perpendicular for a Möbius loop, even though circular needles that large would be difficult to find.[80][81]

  78. Hannah Friederichs (agarthanguide) on Tumblr - "It was not intentional! Aabria was pretty descriptive about Deanna, but I’d say Deanna actually has a lot of influence from animation, more than real life markers. In fact, she was getting so far from realism that I consciously stepped up and chose to hyper-render the knitted and textile elements to see if I could ground her, a little. But her features- her big eyes, her button nose, her heavily defined curls- and her proportions are simply not realistic enough to meaningfully reference a human. That being said, I’m hugely flattered that anything I’ve ever drawn could make someone think of Gina Torres, who is actually my wife (I share her with tens of thousands of others who also have immaculate taste)." - in response to "I just realized that Deanna looks like smol Gina Torres, who is my #1 Space Mom. Was that on purpose? What was the direction from Aabria? How does the process of creating the guests’ art compare to what you do with the main cast?" (August 5, 2023).
  79. Hannah Friederichs (agarthanguide) on Tumblr - "Idk how I became the Knitwear Lady, honestly, but i try to live up to it lol. Actually, there were some mistakes in the Chetney hat that made it technically un-knittable (some of the coloring on the top of the hat was… upside down? so it was technically the back end of the stitches on the wrong side below it?). So my goal was to make it Possible. I think I gotta get into cabling or something, next. It wouldn’t do to rest on the laurels of the Physically Possible." (March 17, 2023).
  80. Hannah Friederichs (@agarthanguide) on Twitter: "yeah but does it twist or is there a seam in the back?? Could go either way! I prefer to think it twists, but honestly it's not really shaped like it twists again, so if it's awkward, I take full responsibility." (March 17, 2023) — in reply to: "Also I had to look you up and thank you for making a knitting piece that actually makes logical sense in a picture like this! It never happens and it’s a beautiful thing! 😍" (backup link)
  81. Hannah Friederichs (@agarthanguide) on Twitter: "you aren't wrong. There's either another twist in the back or a seam. I think if I were doing it again, I'd turn the stitches perpendicular and have it be a moebius loop. Good luck finding circular needles that large, though, lol" (March 17, 2023) — in reply to: "I appreciate the attention to detail with the stockinette front and back texture....but I still can’t figure out how that works. Even if it was mobius twisted I don’t think it would lay like that with both sides facing out on the front like that." (backup link)
