Cosmo Grimm is a shopkeeper in Newfaire and a member of the Circle of Tide & Bone. He is played by Liam O'Brien.

Description[edit | edit source]

Cosmo is 97 years old and wears a slightly oversized tweed jacket and a large bowtie. He uses a brass wheelchair. He is the owner of The Antiquarian, an occult bookstore in The Sidle.[5]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Cosmo is extremely knowledgeable and still highly astute at his age,[6] and often serves as a calming presence within the Circle.[7] He has a reputation at Candela Obscura for stubbornness as he has repeatedly refused to retire and become a Lightkeeper.[8] Unlike Oscar, he believes Oscar can potentially be cured of immortality.[9]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Before Candela Obscura[edit | edit source]

Cosmo first encountered The Serious Man when he was 10 years old.[10] He has been a member of Candela Obscura for his entire adult life,[11] and had, by 1919, repeatedly been asked to retire, which he had refused.[8] He had previously worked in circles with Dr. Elsie Roberts, who also lives with him above his shop.[12] Some of the circles he recalled at the end of his life were The Circle of Gilded Glass, The Circle of Serpent and Thrush, and the Circle on the Hill.[13] He also owns a dachsund named Godot.[14]

Oscar Grimm is his father, but due to Oscar's immortality, they pose as grandson and grandfather respectively.[2] Cosmo observed the errant ritual that made Oscar undying, and believes his own long life may be due to his proximity to the event.[15] The two of them were the only people in their family who survived the sinking of the ship they had been on at the time of the ritual.[16]

Candela Obscura: Chapter 3[edit | edit source]

The Circle of Tide and Bone was formed by Lightkeeper Nokari, of people Cosmo had requested to work with in the past, on the condition that they take one last assignment and Cosmo then retire.[8] The circle was assembled, despite Elsie's trepidation, which she voiced to Cosmo.[17] As they prepared to go to Grayslate Sanatorium to investigate, Cosmo and Oscar had a tense conversation in which it was revealed that Cosmo had recently bailed Oscar out of prison. Cosmo also performed some research on the Ascendancy before the mission.[18] Cosmo, Cordelia Glask, and Elsie caused a scene at the sanatorium in order to both clear the way for Oscar and Rajan Savarimuthu to investigate the grounds and for Elsie to sneak into Director Greenvale's office.[19] They were kicked out of the asylum though the distraction was successful, and Cosmo vouched for Elsie after she temporarily killed Oscar while in her beast form.[20] In the Oldfairen ruins, he stabbed The Great Maw with his Ghostblade, injuring her, though he was also badly wounded.[21] Madam Glask and Elsie were able to stabilize him.[22]

Not long after, Cosmo assisted Oscar in recounting the ritual that first made Oscar immortal, as Oscar had forgotten much of it.[23] He also helped Elsie translate the letters she had found on Director Greenvale's desk and found that they mentioned giving the Director Nighthawk, though the circle did not identify what that substance was. He then participated in the interrogation of The Serious Man, now known to be Toren Gevni, an Unabridged.[24] Cosmo used his knowledge of the Ancient Fairen language to communicate with Arterax, the seawater creature the circle had been tasked with investigating.[25] After Madam Glask had convinced Mina to come back with the circle, he realized that Mina's trust in them was only because she knew should could summon Arterax if needed.[26] Oscar then tucked Cosmo in, and Cosmo admitted to Oscar he was becoming very tired.[27] Later, Cosmo determined the nature of Gevni's dagger and doorknob: the dagger, like his own, could also be used as a stylus to alter runes written in materials such as wax, and the doorknob, when placed in a wall, opened to Gevni's study. Cosmo found a piece of blank paper embedded into the center of a desk and dropped some of his own blood onto it, and when he did so, it began to return information on the Grimm family, gathered after Gevni became aware of Oscar's immortality.[28]

When Rajan, warned by Nokari to run, passed this along to Cosmo, Cosmo used a Timely Iris to heal some Bleed, and said goodbye to Godot.[29] On the drive over, Elsie lost control of her Beast, and as she was driving, the car flipped. Cosmo was badly injured and his wheelchair broken, though Rajan shielded him from the Beast attack.[30] Oscar, who had run from the burning Glass Cat, pulled Cosmo from the car, and the circle escaped in Madam Glask's getaway cars to Groundswell.[31] They then descended down the well into Oldfaire.[32] As they caught their breath, Cosmo apologized to Cordelia for the loss of her casino, to which she told him he was like family and not to worry, and Oscar apologized to Cosmo, who told him that he had been a good father.[33]

The circle continued and eventually reached the Anatithenai, which Cosmo recognized was a strong source of Bleed.[34] After Oscar was able to go through safely, Cosmo joined him, and the two found themselves before a massive topographical map of Oldfaire, covered in markings for the various magickal disasters it had experienced. Cosmo communed with the entity present, Iomene, and was instructed on how to alter the sigils so the circle could have safe passage through the building.[35] Upon meeting Iomene beyond the golden doors, Cosmo only asked that Oscar would have companionship, and upon learning he would, chose to die.[36]
