Candela Obscura is a monthly horror series played in the Candela Obscura tabletop roleplaying game, built on the Illuminated Worlds system.[1] It is an anthologized series divided into three-episode chapters, each following a new circle played by a new cast and telling a standalone narrative. The series premiered premiered on May 25, 2023, and as of January 2024, a fourth chapter has been announced.
Premise[edit | edit source]
In the year 1907, in a world similar to but different from our own, an esoteric order of investigators called Candela Obscura fight against "a mysterious source of corruption and bleed" in the city of Newfaire in the Fairelands, a coastal valley of magick within the fictional country Hale. Each episode, a circle of investigators solves a new mystery.[1][2]
It is played in the game of the same name.
Cast[edit | edit source]
Each chapter of Candela Obscura follows a different circle of investigators and features a rotating cast.
Taliesin Jaffe, who co-created the Candela Obscura game, appears in all chapters as the Lightkeeper, an otherwise unnamed role.[3][1] The character is "a steward for the audience" and narrates the episode prologues. Taliesin described the role as "a bit of a Rod Serling [in The Twilight Zone], but with some interesting in-universe connections that will be revealed in time."[4] Within the world and game itself, a Lightkeeper is a veteran of Candela Obscura who is retired from field work; they guide the investigators and give the circles their mission.[5] Taliesin is additionally a player in the Chapter 4: The Crimson Mirror, during which he also remained as the unnamed Lightkeeper.[6]
Chapter 1: Vassal & Veil[edit | edit source]
Chapter 1 follows the Circle of the Vassal & the Veil and features the following cast:
- Laura Bailey as Arlo Black, Weird (Specialty: Occultist)
Arlo is a wealthy young woman[7] and a former student of Dr. Margrove.[8] She was engaged to Eddie, who had an interest in Oldfairen relics, and one day discovered him being pulled through a portal. Her failed attempt to rescue him left her arm damaged and gray.[9] - Anjali Bhimani as Charlotte Eaves, Face (Specialty: Magician)
Charlotte is the proprietor of The Sight Unseen, a club and speakeasy in the Red Lamp district.[10] When she was young, she experienced a magickal event involving a tear in the sky.[11] She is the longest-serving investigator in the Circle of the Vassal & the Veil.[12] - Ashley Johnson as Auggie James, Slink (Specialty: Criminal)
Auggie is an orphaned newspaper boy. He additionally performs odd jobs throughout the city[13] and sometimes spends the night on a cot in Charlotte's office.[14] He is recruited into Candela Obscura at the beginning of "The Cold Embrace" (CO1x01).[15] - Robbie Daymond as Dr. Howard Margrove, Scholar (Specialty: Professor)
Howard is a professor of philosophy at Briar Bank College.[16] He was recruited into Candela years prior following an experience with a magickal entity that tormented him.[17] - Matthew Mercer as the gamemaster:[18]
The gamemaster is responsible for running the game, which includes managing the environment and world, playing the non-player characters, structuring the story, and determining how the narrative develops in response to the choices and rolls of other players.
Chapter 2: Needle & Thread[edit | edit source]
Chapter 2 follows the Circle of Needle & Thread[19] and features the following cast:
- Travis Willingham as Nathaniel Trapp Face (Specialty: Journalist); Slink (Specialty: Detective)
Nathaniel works for The Civil Tribune investigating corruption and the wrongs his family committed in building Newfaire's subway system.[20] The Trapp family is of old money and powerful in the city, but his repulsion for them has driven him to distance himself.[21] He was a lieutenant during the war.[22] - Zehra Fazal as Dr. Jinnah "Jean" Basar Scholar (Specialty: Doctor)
Jean is a surgeon with "an uncanny knack for putting bodies back together". She is skeptical of the use of magick, having seen it do more harm than good. She has also facilitated some of the "monstrous things" that have happened in her own family. She was a field doctor during the war.[23] - Marisha Ray as Beatrix "Auntie Bee" Monroe Slink (Specialty: Criminal)
Auntie Bee lost everything she had during the war but is trying to maintain a compassion for others and a sense of purpose. Marisha described her as the maternal figure of the circle.[24] - Brennan Lee Mulligan as Sean Finnerty Muscle (Specialty: Soldier)[25]
Sean enlisted illegally at 16 or 17 to fight in the Last Great War with his brothers.[26] He also served under Nathan and alongside Marion.[27] - Luis Carazo as Marion Collodi Weird (Specialty: Medium)
Marion was a soldier during the war. He joined Candela to do "one of the things he fears most" and hopes working with the organization will help overcome that unspecified fear.[28] Carazo participated in playtests of the system.[29] - Spenser Starke as the gamemaster[25]
Starke was also the lead designer and writer for the Candela Obscura game alongside Rowan Hall.[1]
Chapter 3: Tide & Bone[edit | edit source]
Chapter 3 follows the Circle of Tide & Bone and features the following cast:
- Noshir Dalal[30] as Rajan Savarimuthu, Scholar (Specialty: Professor)
Rajan is a young professor of archaeology. His sister was taken over by a creature known as The Maw when he was young.[31] - Sam Riegel[30] as Oscar Grimm, Muscle (Specialty: Soldier)
Oscar is a former performer and convict, Cosmo's relative, and a recent inductee into Candela[32]. He has a strange immortality that costs him part of his memories and personality every time his life is restored.[33] - Gina Darling[30] as Madam Cordelia Glask, Face (Specialty: Magician)
Madam Glask is the proprietor of the Glass Cat Casino, which is also an underground brothel.[34] She entered into a bargain with the sea gods of her people many years ago when her family was lost in a shipwreck.[35] - Ashly Burch[30] as Dr. Elsie Roberts, Scholar (Specialty: Doctor)
Dr. Roberts is a physician who has fallen on harder times and lives above Cosmo's bookshop, The Antiquarian.[36] In an attempt to cure herself of a degenerative lung disease by experimenting with magick, she has caused herself to transform into a strange beast whenever overwhelmed or stressed.[37] - Liam O'Brien[30] as Cosmo Grimm, Weird (Specialty: Occultist)
Cosmo is an elderly man who has been in Candela Obscura much of his life and owns The Antiquarian, an occult bookstore that serves as a Chapter House for Candela.[38] - Aabria Iyengar as the gamemaster[30]
Chapter 4: The Crimson Mirror[edit | edit source]
Chapter 4 follows the Circle of the Crimson Mirror and features the following cast:[6]
- Aimee Carrero as Grimoria, Weird (Specialty: Medium)
Grimoria is an eighteen-year-old orphan who has been taken in by the Foggs, dealers in curiosities,[39] who use her supernatural disposition to help sell their artifacts.[40] - Alexander Ward as Edgar Lycoris, Scholar (Specialty: Doctor)
Dr. Lycoris is a skilled operating surgeon at the Grand Halen Hospital.[41] He lost his sister eighteen years ago in Regent Park to some kind of supernatural force,[42] and her attempts to hold onto him when it happened left him with burn scars in the shape of her hands.[43] - Taliesin Jaffe as Leo Amicus, Face (Specialty: Journalist)
Taliesin has appeared in previous chapters as the Lightkeeper narrating the episode prologues (see above), which is a separate role. Leo Amicus is a bachelor and self proclaimed "man of leisure"[44] who is estranged from his family following an incident twenty-three years ago that resulted in the death of his sister.[45] Leo's flat in the Red Lamp district is also the circle's chapter house.[46] - Imari Williams as Malcolm Trills, Muscle (Specialty: Soldier)[47]
Malcolm is a former soldier who lost his squad and his hand during the War.[48] He has since distanced himself from his wealthy family and works various jobs as a bouncer around the Red Lamp district.[49] - Liam O'Brien as the gamemaster.
Katy O'Brian was also cast and participated in the character building session. However, she ultimately could not play due to scheduling conflicts that arose when Twisters resumed filming following the end of the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.[50]
Live show: The Silver Screen[edit | edit source]
The live show follows the Circle of the Silver Screen and features the following cast:
- Laura Bailey as Evelyn White, Face (Specialty: Celebrity)
- Matthew Mercer as Lester Shaw, Slink (Specialty: Detective)
- Khary Payton as Chey Tanii, Weird (Specialty: Monster)
- Marisha Ray as Jackie Renoux, Face (Specialty: Journalist)
- Taliesin Jaffe as The Lightkeeper and Rudy Ginsmith
- Spenser Starke as the gamemaster
At the start of the show Liam O'Brien briefly reprised his role as Cosmo Grimm.
Production and crew[edit | edit source]
The Candela Obscura series is produced by Vinnie Singh, Maxwell James, and Steve Failows (who also acts as the Director). The Candela Obscura game was created by Taliesin Jaffe and Chris Lockey with lead design and writing by Spenser Starke and Rowan Hall.[1][51] Michael Schmidt was the director of photography. Aaron Monroy was the series art director, and graphic design was by Jordyn Torrence.[52] Lisa Fricke illustrated the character portraits, and Jennifer Newman selected costumes for the cast. The soundtrack for the series was composed by Colm McGuinness.[53][54]
The set for the first chapter of Candela Obscura was conceptualized by Steve Failows,[55] designed by Shaun Ellis (who also did concept art for the setting's Quickstart Guide and for the show), and constructed by Flip This Bitch.[52] They developed a storage hall, which Shaun called the "Abyssal Hall", and put a variety of esoteric objects behind the players, as well as setting up a combination of an astrolabe and a clock in a single contraption behind the Game Master (GM). The preshow art piece seen in the Twitch pre-roll has a section from the final concept art of the set in the bottom left. Ellis also designed the GM screen, mostly focusing on its top half, since this is the only portion of the screen visible on stream.[56] Noxweiler Ignatius Berf was responsible for effects, miniatures, and, alongside Flip This Bitch, set dressing.[52][57][58]
The enclosure on the set for Taliesin Jaffe in the trailer is meant to symbolize the lantern room on the top of a lighthouse but without a source of light. It was also designed by Ellis.[56]
Chapter 1 premiered while the game's core rulebook was in final stages of development.[59]
Episodes[edit | edit source]
Each chapter of Candela Obscura is composed of three self-contained episodes, and each chapter follows a stand-alone arc.[1][19] Episodes usually premiere on Twitch and YouTube on the last Thursday of the month. The YouTube VODs and podcast versions were initially released two weeks later.[1] During Chapter 2, in response to how this schedule made it more difficult to remain caught up on the series, the schedule changed to release VODs the following Monday, the same timetable as Critical Role.[60]
The series premiered on May 25, 2023.[1] The first episode of Chapter 2, in addition to the Twitch and YouTube broadcasts, also premiered in Cinemark Theatres on August 31, 2023,[19][61] and its last episode was moved to November 2, 2023 to accommodate "The Mighty Nein Reunion: Echoes of the Solstice" (OSx54) on October 26, the last Thursday of the month.[62] Chapter 3 premiered on November 30, 2023. To avoid airing an episode over the channel's typical December holiday break, the second and third episodes both aired in January 2024.[30] Lockey, on Twitter, suggested that the three chapters comprise the first season of Candela Obscura.[63]
