Bolo Maximus[1][2][fn 1] is a silver dragon who aligned with Aeor during the late Age of Arcanum and into The Calamity. She disguised as a humanoid woman to attend the Replenishment party in Avalir as the date of acquaintance Loquatius Seelie, who is uncertain of her name. She claimed to want to be a reporter, similar to Loquatius.

As an NPC in Exandria Unlimited: Calamity and Downfall, Bolo is played by Brennan Lee Mulligan.

Description[edit | edit source]

Loquatius Seelie described Bolo as "gorgeous", though it is unclear if this is true or if he is merely complimenting his date.[12] She has a thick, vaguely Slavic accent and a dead-eyed stare. Bolo is interested in becoming a reporter[13] and is quite blunt.[3]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Age of Arcanum[edit | edit source]

During the Age of Arcanum this silver dragon aligned herself with the flying city of Aeor, living under the humanoid guise of a woman named Bolo Maximus. She worked as a spy for Aeor, going to other flying cities to gather intelligence on their own arcane projects. During one Replenishment, she traveled to Avalir in the guise of an aspiring reporter.[14]

Exandria Unlimited: Calamity[edit | edit source]

Bolo and Loquatius met once prior before the events of Exandria Unlimited: Calamity through friends.[12] She attended the party at the Palazzo Por'co as his plus one and got into a minor argument with the hodmedods over drinks. Cerrit Agrupnin found her suspicious and spoke to her, and she asked him to destroy the hodmedod. Cerrit then angrily asked Loquatius who Bolo was, and Laerryn did the same.[3] Cerrit continued watching her throughout the night.[15] When Loquatius returned to the Herald's Tome building much later in the night, having left the party some time earlier, he instructed Aria to ignore any calls from Bolo. Aria said that Bolo had been calling her all night, and Loquatius told her to throw out all the messages, then changed his mind and wanted one of Bolo's messages.[6]

Bolo survived the fall of Avalir by returning to her dragon form and flying away, presumably back to Aeor.[16]

Downfall[edit | edit source]

A century later during The Calamity, Bolo was present at the Factorum Malleus to defend it from the divine avatars. During the battle she shifted into her dragon form, at one point stunning Zaharzht with her Paralyzing Breath. Ultimately she, as well as the shadow dragon Ataro and a third unidentified brass dragon, were destroyed by a Sunburst cast by Ayden.[17]

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The author of the Cognouza journal that Lucien found, which began his connection to the Somnovem, wrote of an inscription on a mural in Aeor that read, in all capital letters: "Family Maximus on the eve of solstice: glory to Gorus and Vitalio Maximus, wealth and long life to their offspring, Morbo, Silio, and Bolo."[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Bolo was created on the spot by Brennan Lee Mulligan off the immediate memories of successful friends with difficult dates when Loquatius mentioned he was unsure of her name. He specifically mentioned a friend who brought someone to a board game night who had a dead-eyed stare and asked why they liked the board games. He additionally mused that Bolo is an example of a "mania" players have for a character that they know a Dungeon Master did not create beforehand.[11]

Appearances and mentions[edit | edit source]

Quotations[edit | edit source]

  • "This bag is giving me a hard time."[18]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Luis Carazo, a player in Exandria Unlimited: Calamity, named Bolo as a "particular favorite" among the non-player characters in Exandria Unlimited: Calamity.[4] Aabria Iyengar, another Calamity player, named Bolo as her one favorite non-player character and particularly loved the dead-eyed stare Brennan went into before roleplaying her; she said that Bolo is "perfect" and was "devastated" that she wasn't able to talk to her due to narrative pacing. Brennan also named Bolo as one of his beloved favorites.[11]
  • Brennan hoped that his decision for Bolo's accent causes Matthew Mercer to play all Aeorians with vaguely Slavic accents going forward.[11][7]
  • Brennan gave his various, somewhat conflicting ideas on Bolo's ultimate fate, most of them joking:
    • She died in the fall of Avalir.[7]
    • She "definitely, definitely makes it out, for sure" and is "100% alive".[8][19]
    • She died twelve hours after the fall of Avalir because she was struck by a wagon.[7]
    • She was a skilled Aeorian spy who was searching for arcane tech, and she teleported out of Avalir after stealing something necessary for one of Aeor's multiple projects.[7][8]
    • She was a polymorphed greatwrym dragon who is immune to fire damage and simply flew away. Brennan and Sam additionally joked that this was the origin of dragonborn.[7][8] Brass, gold, and red dragons are immune to fire.
    • She was undead, thus dead the entire time.[19]
  • Relating to the above, Bolo was later revealed in "4-Sided Dive: Oh My Gods" (4SDx26) to be the silver dragon killed by Ayden's Sunburst. Because of this, it is unclear how this extends to her family. Either they may also be dragons, or could have adopted Bolo's humanoid guise to maintain her cover.
  • Madeleine Roux, who wrote in a reference to Bolo in The Nine Eyes of Lucien, said during the broadcast of "Excelsior" (E3x01) that if Brennan described Bolo, she would "hand to God" cosplay as her.[20]

Footnotes:

  1. What her name is actually is a significant joke because Loquatius is not completely certain when introducing her. She has given her name as both "Bolo" and "Bola", including nodding in confirmation when Cerrit called her "Bola" after she told him "Bolo" (though she ambiguously told him "Bola" seconds before that).[3] In an interview, player Luis Carazo was uncertain whether her name was properly "Bolo" or "Bola".[4] Lou Wilson later calls her "Bola" but Brennan immediately says she is "Bolo", and subtitles refer to her as "Bolo" when Sam Riegel imitates her.[5] She has been consistently called "Bolo" afterwards in "Fire and Ruin" (E3x04), "Exandria Unlimited: Calamity Wrap Up" (Mx15), interviews, and official social media.[6][7][8][9][10][11]
