Appearances

Ayo Jabe is the leader of the rival adventuring party in Call of the Netherdeep. She is an NPC to be played by the Dungeon Master running the adventure.

Description[edit | edit source]

Ayo is a water genasi born during a major storm in the Emerald Gulch to orcish parents. She is from Jigow, where her family has lived for generations, and worked as a hunter for the town.[1]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Ayo is eager to explore the world and have an adventure. She is impulsive and impatient with indecision, and deeply dislikes people who mask their true intent. Dermot Wurder is a long-time friend of hers, however, and she respects his calmer and more measured advice and heeds it when she can.[1] She respects an honest and strong effort more than success gained through trickery.[4] Her greatest goals are to become a legendary hero and slay similarly legendary monsters, and make friends with whom she can be herself.[5]

She has a small crush on Galsariad Ardyth.[6]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Before the events of Call of the Netherdeep[edit | edit source]

Ayo and Dermot became close friends as children in Jigow.[1] Three weeks before the Festival of Merit in 836 PD, Maggie Keeneyes arrived in town, and became close friends with Ayo as well. Irvan Wastewalker and Galsariad joined the party not long after.[7]

Call of the Netherdeep[edit | edit source]

Ayo's first appearance is her declining an offer from Galsariad to cast Longstrider on her during the Ifolon Plunge race during the Festival of Merit, after which she enters the race herself and, if the player character's effort is an honest one, invites them to meet her friends at the closing of the festival.[4]

Throughout the adventure, unless driven to it by the death of one in her party, Ayo maintains her sense of honesty.[8] Even if her party is on hostile terms with the player characters, she will try to avoid them instead.[9] As the adventure continues, she becomes more worried and insecure in her leadership abilities, and begins to withdraw even from her friends.[10] This insecurity continues to weigh on her and she becomes angry about it and her perceived failures.[11]
