Arlo Black is a wealthy young woman in Newfaire and a member of the Circle of the Vassal & the Veil. She is played by Laura Bailey.

Description[edit | edit source]

Arlo is a woman in her "very early" twenties[1] with dark hair. She lives with her parents, and is wealthy enough to support several causes within the city.[2] She is sensitive to supernatural phenomena.[3] Following such phenomena, her right hand became gray, with deep fissures, and does not bleed.[4] Arlo often wears it covered with a glove.[5] After the first assignment, a hole appeared in this hand.[6] After the second assignment, following a ritual, the gray spread to her entire arm.[7] As Arlo recovered from the Forbidden Ritual initiated during the Collector assignment, her right eye became completely black, the gray has traveled up the side of her face, an orange eye appeared in the hand's hole.[8]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Arlo typically appears somewhat abstracted and strange, and her family's servants believe that her stories of Candela Obscura are merely her imagination.[9] When she was telling about her fiance's disappearance, her tone was even and unperturbed.[10] According to Howard, she was a very astute student in her time at the Briar Bank College.[11]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Arlo studied at Briar Bank College and took classes with Howard Margrove.[11] She was engaged to Eddie, an affluent family friend with whom she'd grown up. Throughout his youth, he was interested in relics of the Oldfaire, and this interest intensified after he went to school.[12][13] He eventually became involved with the Red Hand,[14] and, according to Arlo, had done "bad things". At some point, Arlo visited him to find him being pulled through a portal. She failed to pull him back out, and her arm became damaged. Professor Howard Margrove hypothesized that this portal led to an alternate dimension.[12][13]

Candela Obscura Chapter 1[edit | edit source]

Arlo received a summons while at home,[15] and met the others at the Blue Derby Diner. She was briefly affected by the bleed residue on Auggie[16] shortly before their circle was forged.[17]

At Donald's apartment, Arlo was able to determine that the explosion had freed some sort of spirit.[18] Later, at the Evanoch Foundry, she attempted to find an alternate entrance in, and crashed a car into the foundry in her attempt, which caused her to become injured.[19] Eventually, she made her way in to join the others, and was injured by the spirits before using some of her blood to help recapture them.[20]

After the night's adventure, Arlo returned home and was patched up by Mr. Tellbrook, and told him and Mrs. Thomas, another servant, about what had happened, before spending the next day recovering.[21] She also redirected some of her donations to the Clara House.[2]

About a month later, the circle reconvened to investigate a supernatural attack on Chamberwoman Onette Ferris at the Getaway Grand Hotel. Arlo confirmed the creature was a source of bleed,[22] and served as the distraction by pretending to faint in front of one of the Periphery guards.[23] She later helped the party gain entry to the Ferris estate, as the Blacks occupied the same social circles as the Ferrises. When she realized that Aaron Ferris, Onette's husband, had a bleed-related injury in his hand, she called out that he should cut it off.[24] Following this, she gave the party information about Eddie's disappearance and the injury to her hand.[12] She also asked Charlotte about the Red Hand, since Eddie had been involved with them.[25]

At the Alizarin Gallery, Dorna and her guards asked Arlo to leave after recognizing her, though they did not give a reason.[26] During the final showdown against the creature that had attacked Onette, Arlo was able to consult her texts and determine that the entity seemed to be a prisoner who had been bound long ago to Gredarn, a demon of hunger.[27] She also performed a forbidden ritual to contain the creature. This caused it to fall apart. It also caused the damage to her hand to spread up her arm.[7] Following the case, Auggie came to her home and asked if he could use her bathtub, which she gladly granted, and then took him shopping for a suit.[28]

About a week later, the circle was sent out towards the Scarlet Wood to check on Kara Belmon, who had left the city to visit her uncle Vincent. While at Vincent's orchard, they were attacked by a creature that seemed to have stolen Kara's face. Arlo's abilities allowed her to have a vision beyond the Flare, and she sensed that the creature was under external control.[29] On the way back to Newfaire, Arlo learned from her books that the creature in question was a Collector and was likely sensitive to light.[30]

The circle, having found a letter on Kara from Dorna telling her to meet at Brinewash 7, went to the docks and found the warehouse in question. When Auggie and Charlotte were discovered, and a Collector appeared from the corners of the room, Arlo flipped the electric lights to scare it off.[31] Using the maps Auggie stole, she then guided the party to the Van Helter Junkyard, where there was an entrance to Oldfaire.[32] They encountered Lycus, with a Collector under his control. In the fight, Arlo performed two forbidden rituals to fight off the creature, which caused her scar to spread up her face and her eyes to go black, showing her visions of the supernatural world. Her face was briefly stolen, but Howard was able to tear it from the creature. After her second ritual, which caused the lights of Oldfaire to appear, the creature began to disintegrate, revealing it had been Eddie, transformed by the Flare. He reached towards her as he died.[33]
