The Anatithenai[fn 1] is a cavern with rooms built into it, standing on the outskirts of Oldfaire.

Description[edit | edit source]

The Anatithenai is built on the western outskirts of Oldfaire.[1][2] It is surrounded by black spikes and multiple warnings in Oldfairen and in pictograms telling people to stay away.[3] The first room inside the cave is a domed chamber with a topographical map of Oldfaire showing markers for various magickal disasters, as well as a sigil.[4] When the Circle of Tide & Bone entered, they were told how to disable the sigil,[5] which seemingly disabled the many traps within.[2] The rooms within contain treasure and magickal workings and experiments, and lead to massive gold doors with five panels that are engraved with scenes from the life of Iomene. The final portion of the carvings is in a different style, and depict the coup that deposed her.[6]

History[edit | edit source]

Circle of Needle & Thread[edit | edit source]

Violet Boucher, of EONS, was interested in learning about the Anatithenai and questioned Jean Basar about it.[7] Jean later promised to tell Violet what she knew in exchange for Violet ceasing her pursuit of the Circle of Needle & Thread across Westwreck, but Violet ignored the offer and died from a landmine shortly after.[8]

Circle of Tide & Bone[edit | edit source]

Iomene called the Circle of Tide & Bone to her location in the Anatithenai. They descended down the well in Calinus Market and Rajan Savarimuthu led the party westward.[1] Upon reaching the structure, they found it carved with many warnings to stay away, as well as the words "when one enters, all are cursed," and the sense of Bleed was extremely strong.[9] Madam Glask attempted to enter and fell unconscious from the Bleed, and Elsie Roberts was saved from it only by Oscar Grimm stepping forward and responding to Iomene's call.[10] The circle continued forward into the structure, and Iomene instructed Cosmo Grimm to use the dagger he had taken from Toren Gevni to change the sigil so that the curse would not befall them. With Oscar's help, he did so.[5] They continued forward through the building, noticing treasure and various laboratories and sigils in the rooms as they did, before reaching the golden doors to the final room. Upon opening the doors, they each found themselves alone with Iomene.[11] Every member of the circle made a deal with Iomene; all but Elsie and Oscar gave their lives in exchange for a boon, and Oscar chose to stay with Iomene upon her request.[12]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

The black spikes and messages that include pictograms to warn people away from a dangerous site are reminiscent of some of the recommendations from the 1993 Sandia Labs Long-term nuclear waste warning messages report.
